Why has Microsoft photoshopped this?

Engadget spotted this earlier today, it appears Microsoft has photo-shopped an image on the polish version of its Business Productivity site. If you visit the US business site you will see the image below (top) and if you visit the Polish site you'll see the same picture (bottom) but the man in the middle is no longer black. Why has Microsoft done this? It's not only rather strange but in a world where racism is a touchy subject and businesses strive towards equality, this kind of behaviour is slightly alarming.

Understanding Windows 7 upgrade paths

Windows 7 has already earned itself a blue ribbon, and it isn't even in stores yet. Many Vista users will migrate to Redmond's latest and greatest operating system in search of greener pastures, and countless Windows XP laggards will be lured from the woodwork by Windows 7's polish. Microsoft will be granting both XP and Vista users the right to buy "Upgrade" versions of Windows 7 which run for considerably less money. But in terms of how you can perform an upgrade on a machine already running Windows, for some the in-place upgrade option will make the experience seamless; all your programs, files and settings will remain untouched coming from certain versions of Vista.

Google sues Polish poets over gmail.pl

Izabela Krawczyk of GMAiL (Grupa Młodych Artystów i Literatów), which in English translates to " Group of Young Artists and Writers ", told AFP that Google had turned to the country's IT and telecommunications tribunal to try to stop them using http://www.g mail.pl. Google claims that the group of Polish poets has no rights to the name, which resembles the US firm's email service http://www.g mail.com. Krawczyk said that at the end of last year her group was surprised to discover that the domain was available and decided to buy the rights to the domain name in order to raise the profile of GMAiL, which publicises the works of young unknowns who have not yet found a conventional editor.

Krawczyk, a poet and IT fan based in the central Polish city of Lodz, emphasized that that the group is not looking to make money by getting Google to buy the domain off of them: " We didn't buy this name just to sell it to Google. As a matter of pride, we're refusing to give it up. We bought the name legally, with our own money. Nobody gave it to us for free. We refuse to be deprived of what we consider is our property. Our site has a use. There's no financial gain involved. And we're not competing with the US company ." Krawczyk also noted that Google had not proposed a financial settlement: " Their lawyer told me that his client had no intention of paying for something which belonged to him ."

Opinion: I probably have a bias view on this issue as I am Polish. Still, here's my take. I do not believe that GMAiL has done anything wrong and I believe they should not give up the rights to the domain. It is Google's fault for not securing the domain name early on. Also, the domain googlemail.pl is open, so it is not as if Google does not have options. Finally, as in German and in the UK, Google can always offer Polish users to use googlemail.com to sign up for Gmail.

Microsoft provides latest Windows 7 roadmap

Microsoft has been releasing monthly updates to OEM's on their upcoming Windows 7 operating system.

Techarp has posted their latest update where Microsoft notes that they are currently finishing product research based on feedback from OEM and end users. This will help them determine potential Windows 7 offerings / SKUs. Microsoft aims to provide detailed Windows 7 SKU information sometime this month. The next OEM update is scheduled to be released around November 13, 2008.

Interestingly, Microsoft has revealed the "Windows 7 Language Waves". Localised versions of Windows 7 will be released over 101 days after RTM. These are not general release dates but dates that indicate when the various languages will be finalised.

Wave 0 - RTM - English, Spanish, Japanese, German, French
Wave 1 - RTM + 14 days - Italian, Dutch, Russian, Simplified Chinese
Wave 2 - RTM + 28 days - Brazilian Portuguese, Polish, Turkish, Korean
Wave 3 - RTM + 45 days - Traditional Chinese (Hong Kong), Czech, Portuguese, Hungarian
Wave 4 - RTM + 59 days - Danish, Norwegian (Bokmål), Finnish
Wave 5 - RTM + 73 days - Arabic, Hebrew, Greek, Ukrainian
Wave 6 - RTM + 87 days - Thai, Romanian, Lithuanian, Slovak, Bulgarian
Wave 7 - RTM + 101 days - Estonian, Croatian, Serbian Latin, Latvian, Slovenian

In the OEM update Microsoft also detailed Windows Anytime Upgrade (WAU). Like Vista, Windows 7 users will be able to upgrade to a "more premium" version to unlock additional features. More details will be forthcoming in Novembers update presumably when Microsoft release SKU information.

Microsoft is also planning a Windows 7 Tech Guarantee Program, where end users you purchase Vista systems will have the option (for a limited time) of upgrading to Windows 7.

Eligible Editions : Windows Vista Home Premium, Windows Vista Business, Windows Vista Ultimate
Eligible Languages : Wave 0 to Wave 4
Available Upgrade Paths : Like-to-like product paths only (e.g. from Windows Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Home Premium)

Microsoft lifts shroud off Halo 3

Microsoft gave a sneak peak at its "Halo 3" game on Friday, presumably the final chapter of the fast-paced shooter trilogy that the software giant is banking on to help it fend off competition from Sony and Nintendo.

Gamers at the invitation-only preview gave mixed reviews.

"The graphics can use some work ... They're not much different than the previous Halo," said Nicholas Puleo, editor of gaming news Web site Evilavatar.com. "They've got five, six months until release, so they'll add some polish ... When I compare it to other things in the platform, it's not standout."

Microsoft staged previews in New York and San Francisco on Friday in advance of the public test, or "beta," of the game, which goes live next Wednesday...

The State of Skinning

Tweaking and customizing Windows is a major element of what people do with their PC. Neowin.net's own sidebar has an entire section dedicated to Customization websites. There are about 50,000 posts on Neowin just about Windows customization.

As we do each year, we take a look at the state of skinning. Where things stand, and where things are going.

Our conclusion: 2007 was not a great year. Windows Vista made it more difficult to create customization software and content. Spotty support for Vista X64, and the fragmentation of Windows users between XP and Vista made it hard for skinners to pick a target to support.

While there were some bright points last year, there were plenty of boo-boos. Stardock's DesktopX 3.5 never materialized. The Windows Sidebar is a joke. Yahoo finished sucking the soul out of Konfabulator.

In addition, skinning has become incredibly popular. It's not just mainstream these days, it's ubiquitous. As a result, talented skinners are finding careers across the industry creating things for Adobe Air, Microsoft Silver Light, and countless other up and coming platforms.

In 2008, the transition to Vista in terms of software should be largely complete. X64 support should start to become more consistent. And the polish factor should improve.

The full State of Skinning article is very long but goes over alternative shells, msstyles, WindowBlinds, etc. Note that my day job is at Stardock so I'm obviously more familiar with what Stardock is doing than other companies but I've tried to cover everything relevant.

Crysis & Army of Two Delayed

Well it looks like we will all have to wait a bit longer to get our grubby little hands on Crysis and Army of Two:

During Electronic Arts' quarterly financial conference call, EA execs confirmed that two upcoming game will not be released in their fiscal 2007 time period that ends on March 31, 2007. Both Crysis (the PC first person shooter from developer Crytek) and Army of Two (the co-op themed console action game) have been moved to EA's fiscal 2008 year that begins on April 1, 2007. No other specific release dates were revealed.

But look on the bright side, now it gives us all time to get that next big upgrade, right? I know, that doesn't make me feel any better either. But hey, it gives Crytek more time to polish Crysis up for us, and make it even better! Same goes for the impressive looking Army of Two, which you would think by now would be announced for the PC. Maybe they are waiting for Vista, DX10? What do you think?

Windows 7 box art leaks

Potential Windows 7 box art leaked earlier this week from Polish site Centrumxp. Originally many speculated that these images were fake but blogger Long Zheng has unearthed Microsoft using the same logo on the box art, elsewhere. Microsoft has created a Windows Lounge site for internal employees to join a Facebook group for information, training and marketing for Windows 7. The group uses the following image for its logo: Compared to the box art that was leaked it's too similar. It appears as though this could be concept or final box art for the Windows 7 packaging. Microsoft officials have said "off the record" that Windows 7 will RTM in the Summer and be available for the Fall.
