Microsoft's Latest Critical Fixes Include Buggy Windows Patch

For the second time in three months, Microsoft has released a buggy patch for problems it had deemed to be "critical."

Messages on Microsoft's newsgroups about problems began accumulating as early as Wednesday Oct. 12, within 24 hours of the patches' debut. Late Friday, Microsoft acknowledged the buggy patch in one of its infrequent security advisories, and said that customers had reported a wide variety of strange behaviors after installing one of the three critical patches released that week.

Live Mesh Tutorial: Synchronizing Messenger Plus! Skins, Scripts Etc.

Now we know how to synchronize Windows Live Messenger content, how about doing the same for Messenger Plus!?

What can we synchronize there? We can synchronize installed Skins and Scripts! Saves installing/downloading all those installation files again! When I say synchronize here I mean as in have all of those available on every device, it will not change the settings on any of the devices, e.g. on one device you use Skin A and on the other Skin B this will stay as is. You can also synchronize your chat logs if you want. Unfortunately you can not synchronize your Messenger Plus! (Live) Sound Library (technical reasons).

AOL Working On Patch For Instant Messenger Vulnerability

America Online is working on a critical patch for the company's highly popular AIM application. Researchers at Core Security Technologies Wednesday disclosed a bug that could enable a remote hacker to execute malicious code, exploit Internet Explorer bugs, and inject scripting code in the IE browser. The researchers noted that all of the vulnerable AIM clients include support for enhanced message types that enable AIM users to take advantage of HTML to customize text messages with different fonts and colors. " We have addressed the issues that Core Security has brought to us on the server side. We are comfortable with the server side fixes we have in place, but we are also working on a client fix ," said an AOL spokeswoman.

According to Core Security, the vulnerability affects AIM V6.1, as well as the V6.2 beta, which is the latest version of AOL's instant messaging application. It also affects AIM Pro, the instant messaging version for corporate users, and AIM Lite, a simplified version of the client application. " This vulnerability poses a significant security risk to millions of AIM users. Core Security has alerted AOL to this threat and has provided full technical details about the vulnerability so that they can address it in their products ," said Ivan Arce, CTO at Core Security.

Critical Windows patch may wreak PC havoc

A Microsoft patch meant to fix critical security flaws in Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 is causing trouble for some users, the company said Friday.

Th e patch was released Tuesday to fix four Windows flaws, including one that experts predict will be exploited by a worm in the coming days. The flaw, tagged "critical" by Microsoft, lies in a Windows component for transaction processing called the Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator, or MSDTC.

Installing the patch can cause serious problems, Microsoft said in an advisory posted to its Web site Friday. The patch could lock users out of their PC, prevent the Windows Firewall from starting, block certain applications from running or installing, and empty the network connections folder, among other things, the software maker said. ..

Announcing: BlueHat v6!

BlueHat is back in Redmond, as BlueHat v6: The Vuln Behind The Curtain opens September 27th and 28th. Once again we have two days of great security content that covers the spectrum of issues in security.

The BlueHat speakers, both leading external security researchers and internal Microsoft engineers, will pierce the security veil of virtualization and process isolation. Plus, weve got a couple of talks on Windows Mobile and more about automated exploit creation “ this time using Metasploit. There will also be a talk on a DNS pinning design issue that demonstrates how Internet Explorer can turn into a VPN concentrator. All this--and talks on Office, Binary Instrumentation, Visualization and the Economics of Security! And were pretty sure there wont be any visa issues for our invited speakers. :-)

As we reflect back on the 10 years of evolution in security at Microsoft, its fascinating to watch the deepening of relationships between Microsoft and the security ecosystem, and consider how these relationships tie into larger, longer term initiatives. Hearing from the people doing cutting edge research helps Microsofties understand the external research communitys focus and motivations, and helps us build better products and offerings.

Microsoft disses Windows security to sell...more Windows

Matt Asay: I stumbled across this fascinating Microsoft tutorial today entitled "How to Justify a Desktop Upgrade." It's an attempt to coach IT professionals on how to sell desktop upgrades internally. Apparently the value of Vista is not readily apparent, requiring detailed instructions on how to connive and cajole into an upgrade from XP.

The most intriguing thing about the tutorial is its implicit rejection of Microsoft's older technology. Just a few years ago Microsoft was pitching the world on how secure and cool XP was. Now it's telling us largely the opposite...

Next "Patch Tuesday" to include 4 Critical Patches

For this month’s “Patch Tuesday” (September 9th) Microsoft is planning to release 4 critical updates. Being rated “critical” means that the flaws allow remote code execution and is the highest rating Microsoft gives.

The first 2 patch fixes vulnerabilities in Windows Media Player and Encoder.

The third patch covers windows, Internet Explorer, Net. Framework, Office, SQL Server and Visual Studio

The fourth and final patch covers vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office.

September is a quieter month for Microsoft. In contrast August saw 11 patches being issued.
