24.2.2009EA experiments further with free, ad-subsidized games
EA announced today that it will be releasing a free online version of its
Battlefield franchise, driven by advertisements and micro-transactions called
Battlefield Heroes .
The main difference between Battlefield Heroes and FIFA Online is that there is
no limit to the potential for in-game advertisements in the former. Ads in the football game are limited to only those companies who already are FIFA
sponsors. The ads, fortunately, will appear in the front-end and not interfere with the aesthetics of the game.
Speaking of
aesthetics, the graphics of the game has been reported to be simplified into a much cartoonier style, and gameplay is supposed to pare down the skill
and strategy aspects.

adults over the age of 65 who play video games, nearly a third play video games every day. In comparison, the survey found that only 20% of young
adults play video games every day. A persons age is also a factor in whether they play on a computer, games console or other device, such as a mobile

08.12.2008Ultimate Baseball Online to remain free to play
I figured since it is
going to be a slower newsday
than it has been lately, what
with me spamming gaming news
the past couple of weeks or
so, that I would post about
lesser known games a little
more. So with that, I'd like
to bring your attention to
Ultimate
Baseball Online. UBO is a
massively multiplayer baseball
game, MMOB? And up until this
week was free to play (and was
in beta for decades) with a
fairly small userbase. Then
all of a sudden word came
along that the developers of
UBO this week would begin
charging a fee for the game
(wow imagine that) with the
free option going bye
bye.
Well all that changed
and Netamin the developers of
UBO have decided to stay with
a free to play game, no
subscription at all now. The
game will be supported by in
game advertisements (product
billboards like in real
Baseball) and other ad revenue
now. So go forth my Baseball
minions, check out the UBO
website and go play online
with people. Just think, you
won't have to worry about
beer drinking losers and
tailgaters!

Free Xbox Live Arcade Game
If you're hurting for cash but dying for something new to play, you can get a free game from the Xbox Live Arcade called Yaris. Yes, Yaris is the name of a new car from Toyota. Yes, the
game is a promotional tool for the vehicle. But hello, it's free. And for that price, it's not half-bad. The game is a racing action game where you
drive your Yaris (of course) up walls, through tubes, and upside-down while shooting at obstacles & enemies. You're also collecting coins so you can
buy better weapons and upgrade your ride with better shielding and vehicle types. The game has 3 car models, 8 tracks, achievements, and you can play
online with your friends on Xbox LIVE. Not bad for a freebie.

Anarchy Online Free Play Extended Until 2008 + Expansion
Sorry for not posting
this before today, I took a
couple days off from posting
news as I was getting a bit
burnt out doing near 60
stories in about a week, but
I'm back now jack!
Funcom&n
bsp;announced last Friday that
they were extending the play
all you can play promotion of
Anarchy Online all the way
through 2008 now. The
promotion was already extended
once until 2007, now you can
play free until 2008. But
that's not all! In addition
to the extension through 2008,
Funcom is also giving all free
players the PvP centered
expansion "Notum Wars" as
well!
Notum Wars which was
actually voted "Best
expansion of the Year" by
Computer Gaming World when it
came out, adds Player Versus
Player combat to the Anarchy
Online world of Rubi Ka. Notum
Wars allows you to fight other
players for control of land,
build towers to control that
land and then fight it out to
continue holding that land. It
has been done before in games
obviously, but I think Anarchy
Online was the first MMORPG to
add it through PvP content. I
could be wrong of course. To
continue, please be aware for
you new guys interested in
this offer, if you do play
Anarchy Online through the
free promotion, you will see
"dynamic in-game
advertising" which of course
means you will see ads in
game. Now I've never played
the free promotion for more
than a few minutes, so I
haven't seen any of these
ads, but I would imagine they
are not horribly
large nor do
they detract from the
overall gameplay
experience.
So
head on over to the Anarchy
Online website,
register an account if you
don't have one already,
download the game (using bit
torrent) and play some Anarchy
Online with the new Notum Wars
expansion!

ArchLord Goes Free To Play (With a catch though)
Thanks to Bluesnews for the
scoop.
ArchLord,
the MMORPG from Codemasters
which almost across the board
got horrible reviews, will go
"Free To Play" starting
January 4th, 2007. But there
is a catch - you still have to
buy the game. Now normally,
like in the case of Guild Wars
that isn't such a big deal -
right? Well in ArchLords case,
I think the reviews of the
game speak for themselves
pretty well. I'm not trying
to badmouth the game, in fact
I was probably one of the only
beta testers who had some fun
playing the game. But who am I
to argue this, I mean heck it
is going to be free to play
once you buy the game now, so
kudos to Codemasters there I
suppose. Here is the
Codemasters little press blurb
on the move to Free To Play
for ArchLord:
Codemasters Online
Gaming is pleased to announce
that ArchLord will be going
Free To Play on January 4
2007.
ArchLord
will continue to be fully
supported, including the
second fantastic update
Episode II: Season of Siege.
However, players will now be
able to access all this great
content simply by buying the
box; after that it's free!
Over the next few
days all those playing
ArchLord will be receiving
emails updating them of the
changes and how they will be
affected. Visit the website at
www.archlordgame.com
/freetoplay
to find out more information
on how the changes affect you.
If you want to
discuss ArchLord going free to
play, or anything else to do
with ArchLord be sure to
visit the forums. http://community.cod
emasters.com/forum/forumdispla
y.php?f=336
That's right,
ArchLord now has no monthly
fee. Buy the game and that's
it! Get out there and buy a
box and be prepared to take
part in some mass PvP
action.
So there you
have it, ArchLord goes free in
a short few weeks here, and
hopefully they will get some
more players now. I always
hate to see an MMORPG fail,
and ArchLord is no different
in that regard. Who knows,
maybe some of you will give it
a shot!

EA Games are now on Steam
EA has now made several of their games available on the Steam platform: Spore, Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning, Mass Effect, EA Sports FIFA Manager
2009, Need For Speed Undercover, and Spore Creepy & Cute Parts Pack.
However, the fact that they are putting these games onto Steam
isn't the most important part of this. After having Spore be the most pirated game of the year, they are not putting any 3rd-party DRM on
Spore.
Interested in Spore but hate the DRM? This is your chance to get the game without the dreaded SecuROM protection system

Quake Zero will "grow the Quake universe"
Over eight years after it's release Quake III Arena is still one of the most played deathmatch games on PC (and in the CVG office), but id Software
has set it sights in expanding the online shooter's playerbase with the free-to-play Quake Zero.
"We want to see the player
base grow and that's a lot of what's behind Quake Zero," id CEO Todd Hollenshead told CVG. "We think there are a lot of people out there that
would play Quake III if it didn't cost any money to buy it."
Quake Zero is, in case you missed the announcement, is a web-based version of Quake III funded
entirely by in-game advertising.
"The Quake Zero approach is to have it readily available and anyone can play it," said
Hollenshead. "It's focussed more on the sporting element. We want to get that done, get that in to people's hands and get some feedback from them...

Windows 7 Upgrade Program shifts to June 26, 2009
TechARP has come up with a new revised schedule of Microsoft's Windows 7 Upgrade Program. The Upgrade Program shifts to an early date from June
28, 2009 to June 26, 2009 now. According to the new schedule, end users who purchase PCs pre-installed with Vista between the dates June 26, 2009 to
January 31, 2010 are eligible for a free Windows 7 upgrade. According to TechARP, this slight adjustment was done at the request of many OEMs to allow
for better sales over the first weekend of the Program. It is not possible for Windows XP users to upgrade to Windows 7 unlike Windows Vista users.

EA Is Now Officially On Steam, Spore Loses SecuROM
Today, Valve and EA revealed that this week's earlier rumors were true:
Spore (and other EA games) are coming to Steam. As of today, Spore, Spore Creepy & Cute Parts Pack, Warhammer Online, Mass Effect,
Need for Speed: Undercover, and FIFA Manager 2009 are all available for download on Steam. In the coming weeks, EA will add
Mirror's Edge, Dead Space, and Red Alert 3. On the official Steam forums, when asked whether or not Spore would
contain the dreaded SecuROM DRM that contributed to it being the most pirated
game of 2008, a moderator replied, 'It does not have third
party DRM.' EA has also finally launched a 'de-authorization tool' to free up
limited installation slots.
