As Microsoft Corp. gets ready to launch Windows Vista and Office 2007 to consumers, it claims a formidable new foe it lacked at its last major consumer software launch five years ago: the popular filesharing network known as BitTorrent. Windows 7 upgrade chart available

Microsoft has made available the official Windows 7 Upgrade chart, via allthingsd which indicates which previous versions of Windows are available for an in-place upgrade to Windows 7, and to which version they can upgrade. You can view the chart below: As you can see from just a glance at the chart, it's relatively confusing. Windows 7 offers no direct upgrade path from XP, which was announced very early on in the Windows 7 development life cycle. Very specific upgrade paths from other versions of Windows Vista exist also. You can perform a "Custom Install" which is pretty much a clean install, but you have the option to install Windows 7 to another disk without overwriting data.

NVIDIA 8800GT Option for Older Mac Pros Soon?

With the release of the Penryn-based Mac Pros only two weeks ago, Apple introduced a new video card option for the Mac Pros -- the NVIDIA GeForce 8800GT. Existing Mac Pro owners saw this is an opportunity to upgrade from current cards as well as ailing 1900XT cards.

Despite an upgrade-kit becoming available on the Apple Store, Apple quickly contacted those who ordered the video cards to clarify that the 8800GT would only work on the most recently released Penryn Mac Pros. This led one user to jot off an angry letter to Steve Jobs who reportedly responded:

"I suggest you calm down. Everyone knows the issue and it is being worked."

Understanding Windows 7 upgrade paths

Windows 7 has already earned itself a blue ribbon, and it isn't even in stores yet. Many Vista users will migrate to Redmond's latest and greatest operating system in search of greener pastures, and countless Windows XP laggards will be lured from the woodwork by Windows 7's polish. Microsoft will be granting both XP and Vista users the right to buy "Upgrade" versions of Windows 7 which run for considerably less money. But in terms of how you can perform an upgrade on a machine already running Windows, for some the in-place upgrade option will make the experience seamless; all your programs, files and settings will remain untouched coming from certain versions of Vista.

The Secret Windows Vista Upgrade - Explained

There is a well known Windows Vista Upgrade secret in the IT community. In this article I talk about it and the possible legal implications! Please take this article "as-is" I provide no warranty of any kind by providing this information. Well to be honest it is no big secret as you can find this information anywhere online and many Microsoft staff must also know about it as they created this process! The "secret" is that the setup program (setup.exe) in Windows Vista's upgrade version will accept an installed copy of XP, W2K, or an un-activated copy of Vista itself as evidence of a previous installation.

...and it is this last option that enables you to perform a "clean install" of an upgrade version of Windows Vista to any formatted or unformatted hard drive! Basically you are installing Windows Vista twice to take advantage of this trick.

Is This Windows Vista Upgrade Secret Legal? Probably not. I am no legal expert but I am guessing this will violate some part of the Windows Vista EULA (End User Licence Agreement.) BUT Microsoft have created this process.... It is not something you have to try and crack in their software or run a third party application to perform this process... Their development team created it. Which kind of begs the question WHY?

Mozilla ends Firefox 1.5 support, releases Firefox 2.0.0.4 and 3.0 Alpha 5 Preview

Mozilla Corp. issued the last security update for its open-source Firefox 1.5 browser Tuesday. It included an automatic update mechanism to give users the option of upgrading to Firefox 2.0.

"The upgrade offer will be enabled within in a few weeks," said Mozilla in a blog on its developer center.

The long-anticipated end to Firefox 1.5 support was originally slated for April 24, but last month, Mozilla pushed back the drop-dead date, saying it needed more time to craft the automatic updater. When Mozilla triggers what it has called "major updates," users will be offered an in-place upgrade to Firefox 2.0, which they can decline if they wish. Users can also permanently suppress the upgrade message so it never appears again. ..

Mozilla steps up Firefox 3 push

Mozilla is stepping up its efforts to drive users to Firefox 3. The company has begun a campaign which offers Firefox 2 users the option of an upgrade to the new browser upon launching. The pop-up window provides a short list of the improvements in the latest version of the browser and offers users the option of updating immediately, sending another reminder later, or never asking the user to update again.

Because Firefox lacks the type of automatic standalone update utility employed by Apple and Microsoft for updating Safari and Internet Explorer, Mozilla relies on alert messages within the browser to update users when a new version of Firefox is available. The new components of the browser, most notably the built-in antimalware tools, require the company to issue a new end-user license agreement, unlike most Firefox updates.

Mac OSX upgrade problems

Apple released a statement warning users upgrading from Leopard, about the newest available upgrade for Mac OSX to 10.5.6. The problem occurs from an incomplete software update getting into the update process that can cause Mac OSX to cause errors during the "Configuring Installation" window process. Apple recommends users, if they haven't already, to force the software update process to quit the download, remove the partial update from your library and re-download the update. This problem is also been found in the standalone update from Apple's web site, and the combo update. If users still faced with problems updating their Mac OSX machine, they are encouraged to contact Apple with related issues.
