4.11.2008Windows 7: Measuring the "superbar"
One of the new things that anyone would notice immediately in Windows 7 is the new Taskbar. Microsoft internally calls it 'Superbar'. The
Windows Taskbar has come a long way since Windows 95 was released. With the help of the Taskbar, it becomes easier to see what are the programs
currently running, switching between applications and also to access your favorites using the Quick Launch. Image Courtesy: Windows 7 Blog For
many, Windows 7's Superbar looks bigger than the Windows Vista's Taskbar. Long Zheng has taken steps to prove that, after all the Superbar is
not that big. Long has found that the Windows Start button is actually shrunk by about 8 pixels.

05.01.2009Mac Dock and Windows 7 Superbar - Part 2
In the first part of this series, we had a brief look into the history of the dock and Windows 7 superbar. Today, we will go through some of the basic
functionalities that both dock and superbar provide and have in common. The dock can hold any number of items and resize them dynamically to fit
while using magnification to clarify smaller resized items. Applications that do not normally keep icons in the dock will still appear when running
and remain until they are quit. Running items are distinguished by an indicator at the bottom of their respective icons. When you quit an
application whose icon resides in the dock, the indicator disappears.

05.03.2009Windows 7 Build 6801 has the Superbar, too
Microsoft deceived every PDC2008 attendee by saying that the build they handed out, build 6801, didn't have the new "superbar" taskbar replacement
that was being shown off throughout the conference.
Well, it turns out that it really is in the build, you just have to
be properly authenticated in Redmond. Rafael (
withinwindows.com) has decrypted this
mystery and has provided a patch (with instructions) that will enable the superbar on any 6801 install.

03.11.2008Oh yes, the Superbar is available in Windows 7 Build 6801
Wishing that the new "Superbar" was available for the PDC build of Windows 7? What about for your trusty copy of Vista? Well it isn't
available for Vista yet (I am sure someone will whip up someway of porting it over) but it is available to all users who have a copy of Windows 7
Build 6801.
Rafael, the well known Ux theme patcher, from
withinwindows.com, has uncovered how to bring this breakthrough feature available to anyone who is lucky enough to have Windows
7 build 6801. It does take some changing to the OS to enable this hidden feature but it is well worth it.
Windows 7's "Superbar" was
demonstrated heavily at Microsoft's PDC. For more information and full demonstrations checkout our
PDC section.

03.11.2008Visa introduces pin payment card
Visa is
introducing a revolutionary
new credit card allowing users to use their PIN for online card transactions.
Aimed at savvy internet users, the Visa PIN card features an
alpha-numeric display and a 12-button keypad built into the back of a conventional credit, debit or prepaid card. The card, developed using technology
from Australia-based
Emue technologies, promises a three-year battery life, and
much improved protection from online fraudsters.
Customers enter their PIN code onto the keypad and this generates one-time password. The
one-time password is then used to authenticate online purchases.
MBNA, a Bank of America company in the UK, Cornèr Bank in
Switzerland, Cal in Israel and IW Bank in Italy will each begin limited pilot trials of the new card shortly.

11.11.2008Rafael's at it Again
As a lot of people are aware, Rafael from Within Windows has been finding and exposing un-released Windows 7 features, most notably the "Superbar"
and Desktop Slideshows.
He has now created a full unlocking tool called "Blue Badge" that will unlock the following features:
- The Superbar
- Gestures and Panning (for use on touch screens)
- Desktop Slideshows
Please note two things:
1. This application does NOT back up any of the files it patches, so to be safe, you will need to back up these files:
WindowsExplorer.exe
WindowsSystem32wisptis.exe
WindowsSystem32ieframe.dll
WindowsSystem32shell32.dll
WindowsSystem32stobject.dll
WindowsSystem32TabletPC.cpl
WindowsSystem32themecpl.dll
WindowsSystem32themeui.dll
WindowsSystem32powercfg.cpl
-----------
2. This application IS compatible
with systems currently running the superbar who want to extend their desktop to allow the three other features.

Mac Dock and Windows Taskbar Overview The Dock in OS X Leopard is a bar of icons that sits at the bottom or side of the screen, and employs a 3D
perspective. The Dock is a prominent feature of OS X. It is also a prominent feature of Mac OS X's predecessors NeXTSTEP and OPENSTEP operating
systems. It is primarily a way to launch and switch between running applications. It not only provides easy access to applications, but allows the
user to organize them to their taste within the Dock. Any file or app can be attached to the Dock.

15.01.2009Tidbits about the new "superbar" taskbar
Long Zheng: Ever since the Windows 7 demo with Steven Sinofsky and Julie-Larson Green at PDC 2008 where they showed off the new superbar taskbar,
theres been a lot of questions about how the new taskbar will work, customized or tweaked.
Unfortunately because the pre-beta
build did not contain the new taskbar, its been hard to answer those questions. Fortunately I met up with Chaitanya Sareen today who took me through a
better tour of the new taskbar on one of the demo machines with the new build. Heres a few facts about the new taskbar.

The New Taskbar in Windows 7
As we have noticed with the Windows 7 presentation at D6, Microsoft is putting in some efforts to make an update to the aging design of the taskbar,
contrary to the belief that they are going to make something completely new. The supposedly new name of the taskbar is the "Superbar." Long Zheng
has pointed out some of the new things:
"The first being the taskbar is higher than usual, but not as big as double-height. If I were to
guess, I'd say its somewhere around 1.75x-high. In the left corner, the Windows orb remains wedged "on top" of the taskbar - sticking its head out
a little - instead of in the center like it is today in Vista.
The taskbar also appears 'divided' into sections by variations in the
color (dark, gray, lighter) to indicate the different areas. Speaking of which, if you look at the far right corner, you'd notice that the tray
(icons & clock) is not touching the edge of the screen, and there's a small lighter gap. I have no explanation for this, but is well worth keeping an
eye on."

Mobo makers: AMD???s Socket M2
to simplify next-generation
CPU
Advanced Micro Devices
(AMD) plans to simplify its
90nm CPU platform with its
940-pin Socket M2 CPU design,
according to motherboard
makers. As Intel schedules to
unify desktop PC- and
notebook-use processors in the
second half of 2006, AMD is
looking to standardize a full
CPU line for entry-level,
middle-range and high-end
segments, indicated the
makers.
AM
D Taiwan declined to comment
on the
report.
AMD???s
Socket M2 CPU line will
originally target the high-end
market, the makers said,
noting that the chip vendor
has informed them that the
940-pin platform will also be
released for the mainstream
and entry-level segments next
year. AMD is now delivering
samples of the next-generation
CPU to its downstream
customers, the makers
added.
During the
platform migration, products
that support the new Socket M2
and the old Socket 939 and 754
will still be on the market by
the end of 2006, according to
motherboard makers. The makers
expect that AMD???s CPU
standardization will help
reduce production and handling
costs...

PayPal Phishing Scam Warning
Security firm F-Secure is warning of a PayPal phishing scam in circulation that seeks to steal your personal information.
A fake website,
which is designed to look like PayPal, was registered three weeks ago to someone using the name Asger Trier Bing, from Copenhagen, and the site is
hosted in Denmark.
With the domain name servicecenter-us-eu.dk, F-Secure describes the scam as being "old school" in its
approach. When you visit the site you are asked to input some details, then it takes you to another webpage for some "additional security
checks", which include questions about your parents full names and bank card PIN.
"It is quite astonishing if anybody would be
gullible enough to go through the full form and type in all the required information. Like your email password? Your fathers day of birth? Your PIN
number? Then again... someone will fall for this. Someone always does," said F-Secures Mikko Hypponen.

AMD Releases Final "R600" Specs
AMD is touting the R600 will
feature 700 million
transistors (compared to the
Radeon X1900 series' 384
million) and a full 512-bit
memory interface with support
for GDDR3 and GDDR4. On March
30, 2007, AMD will initially
debut the R600 as the ATI
Radeon X2900 XTX in two
separate configurations: one
for OEMs (12" layout) and
another for retail (9.5"
layout). ATI guidance claims
the X2900 XTX retail card will
come as a two-slot design with
a vapor chamber cooler while
the OEM version features a
quiet fan cooler. 1GB of GDDR4
memory (supplied by Samsung)
is the reference configuration
for Radeon X2900 XTX.
Approximately one
month later, the company will
launch the GDDR3 version,
dubbed the Radeon X2900 XT.
This card features 512MB of
GDDR3, lower clock frequencies
than the X2900 XTX and is one
of the first Radeons to
feature heatpipes on the
reference design. AMD
anticipates the target driver
for X2900 XT to be Catalyst
8.36, WHQL expected around
March. Radeon X2900 will
feature native CrossFire
support via an internal bridge
interface (no longer a need
for the external cable). There
is no Master card needed
althought any Radeon X2900 can
act as the Master card. All
three versions of Radeon X2900
are expected to include native
HDMI and one 6-pin and one
8-pin (2x4) VGA power
connector (both connectors are
also backwards compatible with
6-pin power supply cables).
