21.12.2005Clearing up the confusion on Vista licensing and key management
Since Windows Vista has been released to the public, there has been a lot of confusion and hype surrounding some of the licensing decisions and

02.02.2006Office 2007 Nukes the Insert
Key
Overtype mode, i.e. the way
Microsoft Office apps, in
particular Word, will
overwrite text in front of the
cursor as you type, without so
much as a beep, if you happen
to have pressed your Insert
key, has long been the scourge
of typists the world over, and
for a good long time there's
been real no reason for its
existence at all.
Finally Microsoft seems to
have realized this, as
according to Jan Miksovsky at
flow|state, Office 2007 will
have overtype mode, no matter
how many times you press the
Insert key, disabled by
default.
Of
course, there's still a
preference to re-enable the
"feature" since, as
Miksovsky says, "with a user
base the size of Microsoft's,
it's virtually guaranteed
that a large corporate
customer has a vocal
department that swears they
need Overtype mode, so
dropping the mode was probably
out of the question." Now,
can we get rid of the CAPS
LOCK key, next?

Key-logging malware could be behind the recent web mail attack that saw thousands of email addresses and their associated passwords leaked online,

attack. According to Mr Shulman, the majority of people do not fall for phishing attacks, with only one person falling for such an email in every
1000 sent. "The vast majority of people do not fall prey to phishing attacks and the success rates are around one per 1,000," he told the BBC.

02.05.2007China has penetrated key U.S. databases: SANS director
An aggressive, non-stop campaign by China to penetrate key government and industry databases in the United States already has succeeded and the U.S.
urgently needs to monitor all internet traffic to government and private-sector networks to find the enemy within, SANS Institute Director of
Research Allan Paller told SCMagazineUS.com.
They are already in and we have to find them, Paller said.
Paller said that empirical evidence analyzed by researchers leaves little doubt that the Chinese government has mounted a non-stop, well-financed
attack to breach key national security and industry databases, adding that it is likely that this effort is making use of personnel provided by
China's People's Liberation Army.

18.01.2008Sam's Tip of the Week #4 - Controlling audio in Mac OS X
The real goodies in Mac OS are the ones that aren't obvious. I'll go over some things about adjusting audio in this tip so convenient that you
will end up wondering how you lived without them.
All of these tips only work in Leopard or later except the last one which requires Snow
Leopard. There isn't much to say here, so I'll just run down with a list:
Adjust volume without the 'blip' sound - Hold down the shift
key when using the volume buttons on your keyboard. Note that there is a setting in the Sounds preference pane that is permanent.
Adjust
volume more granularly - Hold down both the Option and Shift keys while using the volume buttons on the keyboard. Instead of the volume increasing by
one "block" on the HUD, each "block" will take 4 key presses to fill or empty, giving you a much finer control.
Quickly open the Sounds
preference pane - Press any volume key on the keyboard while holding down the Option key. For Leopard users, this is the most convenient way to
change audio sources.
Change volume sources from the menu bar (Snow Leopard only) - Hold down the Option key when clicking the volume icon
in the menu bar. This lets you change the audio input and output devices and has a button to go to the Sounds preference pane.
I hope you
find this tip useful! To contact me for comments, questions or suggestions, just email me: sam -at- scj -dot- me.

06.09.2009Microsoft's Vista 'Family Discount' Troubles
In the past, early adopters of
new Windows versions have had
some small hurdles to
overcome. Such hurdles may be
software incompatibility, or
lack of driver support. These
sorts of things are almost
expected with each new Windows
launch. But what would you do
if you bought Windows Vista
and your product key didn't
work. What if Microsoft had no
solution and was unwilling to
issue you a new key?
Many (if not all)
users who took advantage of
Microsoft's Vista Family
Discount have been issued
invalid installation keys and
cannot install Windows Vista
Home Premium. Microsoft
confirms that the keys are
indeed valid, but not for
Windows Vista. The CSR I spoke
with was unable to tell what
the key was for, but it did
appear to be a valid key, for
something.
Microsoft says, This is a
known issue and has been
escalated to the program
manager. When asked what could
be done I was told, I can take
your name and number and call
you back when there is a
solution. If that is not
acceptable, I can cancel your
order and issue you a refund.
I was also told, There is no
expected time period for a fix
at this time.

01.02.2007Windows 7 Ultimate cracked and activated with OEM master key
Windows 7 has yet to even be released officially to the general public, and already the dodgy folk on the Internet have fully cracked and activated
the Ultimate version, with help from a leaked Lenovo OEM DVD .ISO file. The news comes from website My Digital Life who state that you can already
pass Windows Genuine Advantage validation offline, OEM style. The leaked .ISO was originally posted on a Chinese forum, which was then downloaded in
order for people to get hold of the boot.wim, and in turn retrieving the OEM-SLP key, plus the OEM activation certificate. Microsoft uses the same
digitally signed OEM certificate, which has an .xrm-ms extension, as that in Windows Vista.
