The State of Microsoft Beta Programs

Before I kick off this editorial let me just state that I am no big-time tester and I haven’t even participated in a Windows beta (yet), but I do have some knowledge about such beta programs, I have people who may be considered “big-time” testers that I regularly talk to, and at the moment I’m participating in both the Microsoft Office 2010 Technical Beta and the Office 2010 Technical Preview, which is really the catalyst for me writing this article.

Microsoft cuts apps from Windows 7

Microsoft has decided that Windows 7 won't include built-in programs for e-mail, photo editing, and movie making, as was done with Windows Vista.

The software maker included Windows Photo Gallery, Windows Mail, and Windows Movie Maker as part of Vista, but later chose to offer separate downloadable Windows Live programs that essentially replaced those components with versions that could connect to online services from Microsoft and others.

Is Microsoft working on software center for Windows?

Questions arise as to why Windows Vista and Windows 7 have renamed the "Add and Remove Programs" to "Programs and Features", alongside "Windows Updates". It is possible that Microsoft is planning to release a software center that will be able to find updates for all your programs that are deemed safe by Microsoft, right inside Windows Update. This type of software already exists in programs like FileHippo.com's Update Checker that scans installed programs on your machine, and compares the updated version on FileHippo.com.

New Rookies 'battle between generations' ad from Microsoft

The ads featured 4 1/2 year old Kylie and 7 year old Alexa who use Windows Live Photo Gallery to enhance their pictures. Microsoft talks Windows Media Photo; JPEG rival

Microsoft detailed the new image format Wednesday at the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference. Windows Media Photo will be supported in Windows Vista and also made available for Windows XP, Bill Crow, program manager for Windows Media Photo said in a presentation.

Compression with better quality than the jpeg format is the main key. This will save space, transfer faster and conserve battery life with devices.

Ralf Mueller an application planner from Sony Ericsson said "Considering our development cycle, I could not see us supporting Windows Media Photo before 2008".

Windows Live Photo Gallery (Beta) includes Flickr Features

In response to users, Microsoft has added the ability to publish photos on Flickr from Windows Live Photo Gallery (Publish menu). The feature is only available with the latest beta version (2.2 refresh) which must be acquired from Microsoft Update after installing the previous Beta version. As well, amongst the usual bug fixing, the software giant has removed the WDS (Windows Desktop Search) requirement for installing WLPG on Windows XP. The catch? It still has to be installed, but can be uninstalled afterwards (assuming you have build 1299.1010 and WDS is not being used by any other programs). Is Microsoft making the right move by working with a competitor?

No fix for data corruption bug in Windows Home Server

Two months after acknowledging a serious data corruption bug exists in Windows Home Server, Microsoft has admitted it still has no fix. The latest update to its knowledgebase entry essentially says, "still workin' on it". The bug relates to a little known, but frequently used, method of writing hidden data to NTFS file systems, which is incompatible with the disk pooling strategy used in Home Server.

The software giant first acknowledged the problem on December 21 last year, providing a list of programs that could cause data on a Windows Home Server to become corrupted, including Windows Vista Photo Gallery, Windows Live Photo Gallery, OneNote 2007, OneNote 2003, Outlook 2007, Money 2007, SyncToy 2.0 beta, QuickBooks and uTorrent.

Kristen Miller: At our last estimate, the Windows Live Photo Gallery BETA was installed by nearly 3 million users worldwide. Our BETA testers give us feedback, report bugs, and even yell at us when we make stupid design decisions “ all of which helps us delivery high-quality products. Thank you to you all -- our BETA testers rock!

We recently deployed Windows Live Photo Gallery 2008 via Microsoft Update “ If you have Microsoft Update enabled on your PC and had the BETA installed , then your BETA build should have been upgraded to the final release build (version 1308.1023).  Go check it out! If it wasnt auto-upgraded, you can either launch Microsoft Update and do a scan for new updates, or go back to photogallery.live.com  and manually upgrade to the final release build.
