Another security hole found in IE

Secunia published an advisory on Tuesday stating that an error could be exploited to fake the address bar in a browser window. This tactic could be used in phishing scams that attempt to trick people into believing they are on a legitimate site, when in fact they are viewing a fraudulent Web page. Phishing is a prevalent type of online scam that seeks to pilfer personal information from unsuspecting Internet users. The scams typically combine spam e-mail with fraudulent Web sites that appear to come from a trusted source, such as a credit card company or a bank.

A gamer fed up with his new Xbox 360 crashing every 20 minutes has fixed the problem by raising the power supply off the ground with some string.

Dan, from Duluth, or 'goldeneyemaster' as he is known, told the game spot forum here that he thinks the main reason that the xBox 360 freezes is because the power supply overheats. The solution is to lift the power supply off the floor and allow the air to circulate better around it.

Outlook 2007/2003/2002 Add-in: Personal Folders Backup

Backing up your Microsoft Outlook information is quicker and easier with the Personal Folders Backup feature. Personal Folders Backup creates backup copies of your .PST files at regular intervals, in Outlook 2002 and later versions, making it easy to keep all of your Outlook folders safely backed up.

With Personal Folders Backup, you can choose which of your .PST files you wish to back up, and how often you wish to back them up.

Each .PST file contains all of your Outlook folders, including the Inbox, Calendar, and Contacts. You can have a single .PST file (usually called "Internet Folders" or "Personal Folders" in your Folder List), but you might also have an additional .PST file that you use for archiving ("Archiving Folders"). Personal Folders Backup lets you back up any or all of these .PST files.

Microsoft tees up LiveDrive hosted-storage service

For more than two years, there've been tips circulating that Microsoft was readying an online storage service, code-named LiveDrive. Finally, the service, part of Microsoft's hosted consumer storage offering — Windows Live Folders — is about to go to beta, according to http://www.liveside.net/blogs/ main/archive/2007/05/12/live-d rive-is-almost-here-windows-li ve-folders-beta.aspx>LiveSide. net.

Microsoft's positioning slogan for Live Folders: "Password-protected online file storage. Always available where you need it."

LiveSide links to the Windows Live Folders beta http://folders.live.com/>home page (not sure how long this link will keep working, so visit early and often). According to that page, Microsoft is planning to allow users to store up to 500 MB (initially) worth of personal, shared and public files in the cloud. ..

SanDisk introduces FlashBack adapter as notebook HDD backup

SanDisk announced the availability of its FlashBack adapter as a backup storage media to protect against unexpected PC system failure or hard disk drive (HDD) crash. The FlashBack adapter fits into the ExpressCard slot where it will automatically and continuously back up and encrypt critical data onto a SecureDigital (SD) or SD HighCapacity (SDHC) card. With the backup card nested completely inside the notebook, the system is literally out of sight.

Once the adapter is installed, users pre-select backup sources by individual files, folders and/or file types. The device will then back up and encrypt data automatically and continuously from the computer's HDD to the memory card. Backup occurs as soon as there is a change to a designated file, or when a file is added or deleted. There is no need for scheduling backups and no need for further user intervention. Also, the application has a screen indicator to show the amount of storage available, along with a taskbar icon that displays the ongoing backup status.

Hands on: More Vista mysteries

Several readers have been puzzled by Access denied messages when they try to open certain folders in Windows Vista Explorer or from an applications File Open or Save dialogue. For example, complained E Jones, C:Documents and Settings is not accessible. I do not understand why access to my own documents should be denied.

Another reader was frustrated by her inability to add shortcuts to the Send to folder. Ive been using this since Windows 95 and very useful it is too but how the heck do I open it?

There are a number of these folders around that cant be opened, and they are distinguished by faint folder icons with an arrow overlay. You only see them if you have both Show hidden files and folders ticked and Hide protected operating system files unticked in Folder Options, View.

Windows Live Folders beta - more info

The folks over at LiveSide have put up and detailed walkthrough of Microsoft's latest Live product, Windows Live Folders.

Here's a snip:

Windows Live Folders is (sic) not a difficult to use service, folder creation is straightforward, as it the uploading of files. Microsoft is aiming Windows Live Folders towards a large as market as possible, so the basic procedures need to be simple to promote adoption amongst the less tech-savy. The use of ajax to create new folders is nice, though the rest of the site could do with a little too. As we've seen with Windows Live Hotmail though, too much of a good thing can be bad.

Backup More Than 1GB per Second Using SQL2008 Backup Compression

Backup Compression in SQL2008 performs very well and it is easy to use. You could either use With Compression along with the Backup command or simply enable default backup compression through sp_configure by setting backup compression default value to 1. It is very convenient for backups of large databases in our customer lab environment.

A few things you could do to make the backup compression perform better. The hardware we used is 32way HP Superdome and StorageWorks XP12000 disk array.

Whats new with backup and Restore on Vista SP1

Christine Fok: Vista SP1 Backup & Restore contains many updates that improve reliability. Great effort has been put into improving the overall quality of File Backup, Complete PC Backup and System Restore.

Many of those important changes may not be visible to users, but if you run Backup and Restore tools, you can see some functionality improvements that many users had asked for:

Backing-up EFS files

File Backup now backs up EFS (Encrypting File System) encrypted files. For those concerned with security, the encryption on those files are kept throughout the process. So dont worry, you wont compromise your documents security by using our Vista SP1 backup tool.

Restoring Complete PC to a new motherboard

With SP1, you can use Complete PC Restore to a new motherboard that uses previously absent disk controller. That means, if the new hardware requires an inbox driver that was previously disabled when the Complete PC backup was taken, the required critical driver will be enabled in the last stage of the restore to ensure the machine will be bootable.

OTS credentials for scheduling Backup

In Vista (pre-SP1), only someone logged in as administrator could configure backup. Now, its possible for standard users to configure a backup. When scheduling a backup, standard users will be asked to supply administrator credentials. That is what we call over-the-shoulder (OTS) credentials. That is because well, if the user doesnt know the credentials, the administrator usually type it over the users shoulder :-)
