As I said in yesterday’s introduction, my job as an engineer on the Windows Vista team is to improve performance. 16.03.2009AMD's website paints Barcelona performance pictures not seen in the real world
If you visit AMD's website and look at Barcelona's performance numbers you'll see a very rosy picture. Benchmarks there show performance numbers
which most would desire. And yet, if you turn to the real-world benchmarks published today, the situation is much different.
The
first benchmark listed on AMD's website is called VMmark Performance. It shows a 3.2 GHz Opteron 2224 SE compared to a non-existent Barcelona
Opteron 2360 SE. They also use a "VMware ESX 3.5 experimental build 55263" release which is not available to the public. VMware's website shows
VMware ESX Server 3i as their current product, which on build 52542.
The increase in performance for this benchmark is 124% over
the much faster clocked 880 system. That's more than double the performance and it shows just how advanced Barcelona is over their previous
architecture. And yet to obtain these high performance numbers, AMD is using a publicly unavailable processor on an build of VMware ESX, which is
also not available. These numbers are not something we can duplicate in the real world, or even take advantage of yet. They show only what is
possible with Barcelona, not what's available.

02.09.2009Windows 7 build 7127 leaked
Redmond is still running low on Joe the plumbers as another Windows 7 leak surfaces today. This time around it's the second RTM branch build to
leak, 7127. Approximately a month after 7106 leaked. The build string is 7127.0.090507-1820 meaning it was compiled just over a week ago so it's
still fresh off the blocks. Microsoft is progressing steadily with the RTM branch and company insiders have indicated the software giant is well on
target to finalise the RTM build over the summer. Our guess? Late June or early July. Microsoft is expected to announce general availability of
Windows 7 for before the Christmas period, cashing in on holiday PC purchasers.

15.05.2009Windows 7 build 7229 leaked
Another Windows 7 build has leaked. This time it's build 7229. Sources are indicating that unless there is a leak internally from Microsoft, this
would be last build leaked before the RTM. The build string is 7229.0.090604-1901 meaning that it was compiled a week ago. Earlier this week, build
7227 leaked to the public. Initial reports indicate that you can not use your RC keys with this build, so if you want to activate properly you
should not upgrade to this build. Windows 7 is still on track for a July RTM, and it's possible that it may even RTM by the end of June.
Microsoft has announced that it will be available in stores October 22nd.

03.09.2006Windows 7 build 7137 leaked
Barely two weeks after build 7127 leaked we have another fresh leak of Windows 7, build 7137. This time around the build tag is 7137.0.090521-1745
meaning this build is only a week old. As ever the build is available at the usual places but it might be worth waiting until RTM as a lot of Windows
7 torrents have been hit by malware and viruses recently. Microsoft is still on target to finalise Windows 7 over the summer with a general
availability this fall. Un-official wallpaper not included by default, thanks to djlegion for the screenshots.

28.05.2009New Vista Build to be Released
this Week
Only days after the release of
build 5456 of Windows Vista,
Microsoft already plans to
release another interim build,
no later than this week.
The build supposedly
consumes fewer system
resources and the long-awaited
new Aero Basic theme.
The build number is
currently unknown and the
build will likely be released
to usual technical beta
testers as well as TechNet
subscribers.
"Vista in its beta form
is pretty taxing on the
system. It's slow and a
little non-responsive," said
Mike Sievert, corporate vice
president of Windows client
marketing at Microsoft.
"That piece of
software is now about nine
weeks old and that may not
sound like a lot but at this
stage, that's an old version
in software terms."
"You'll see a huge
difference ,"
Sievert said of the interim
release, noting Microsoft is
recommending 512 Megabytes of
memory when testing the new
code.

01.07.2009Windows Vista Build 5536
Released
It's been a while, you can
finaly take that sigh of
releif. Today Microsoft
released build 5536 on
Microsoft Connect.
The last build released,
5472, was released over one
and a half months ago. Build
5536 is a branch of the RC1
milestone, however it does not
appear to be the final RC1
build.
The build
weighs in at 2,643.66MB, and
is currently only available in
X86. It is not yet known when
or if a X64 version will be
released.
So
what's new? Performance in
this build has been drasticly
improved, with more stability
and reliability. Some UI
improvements here and there,
including some new icons. And
it also appears installation
time has been dramatically
reduced.
