Vista’s UAC Catches Rootkits Before Installing

Looks like Vista’s much-maligned User Access Control or UAC has one benefit for a savvy user: it can detect rootkits before they install. AV-Test.org conducted a test of popular antivirus programs to see how well they detected rootkits and the tester had to turn off UAC on the Vista test systems because it detected every rootkit used in the test.

Once on a PC, rootkits can bury themselves quietly, but they have to get to that point first. As long as users interpret prompts from the UAC system attentively, or those messages haven't in some way been spoofed, rootkits struggle to jump to the PC without drawing attention to themselves.

Test Drive Unlimited PC Beta On Fileplanet!

Upset that Xbox 360 users have Test Drive Unlimited already? Upset that PC users have to wait months after the 360 version is released to play it? Well be upset no longer, as Atari brings the Test Drive Unlimited beta to Fileplanet! This is a subscriber only beta (for now, as usual) and be prepared this is an absolutely HUGE file to download - if you get in the beta that is. The installer is 3.5 GB in size, I'm not kidding.

The game, for those of you who don't know, is a free roaming racing game. And by free roaming - I mean you have about 1,000 miles to race on Hawaiian roads. Cars from companies such as Audi, Mustang and Lamborghini are represented among many others. There are about 120 cars in the game, so I'm sure you will find one to suit you. You can "pick up" and play against anyone at pretty much anytime. You just drive around the island, and can turn any stretch of road into a race with someone else. Of course as you win races and get money you can buy upgrades and all that good stuff we are used to. More or less Test Drive Unlimited is a MMOCG (massively multiplayer car game) but without the insane gnoll grinding!

So head on over to Fileplanet and sign up for the beta, and hopefully you will get accepted and enjoy yourself on the big road!

id's Tech 5 is not meant to push graphics cards to the limit

In an interview with IGN, Tim Willits, co-owner of id Software, developer of some of the most famous and advanced for their time 3D engines, says that his companys latest engine was not created with the goal to make latest PC graphics cards beg for mercy. This time, the engine is definitely tailored for consoles and the PC, whereas id used to create PC engines and let its licensees handle console ports down the lane.

At this years E3 Media and Business Summit, id only demonstrated its long since announced Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, a game currently in beta test. Nonetheless, the Texan ISV did not mind talking a bit about it long awaited and recently presented technology, Tech 5.

With these E3 interviews, we learn that ids engine and new IP were not promised to be high end PC showcases, but we also learned about the current state of the engine across the three platforms it currently supports...
