Leading Memory Maker Acquires Enthusiast PC Manufacturer

In a bid to leverage its memory market footprint, OCZ Technology Group acquired Hypersonic, a leading maker of personal computers for gamers. The move will bring OCZ into a new battle, now against companies like Dells Alienware and HPs Voodoo PC. The decision will make OCZ the first memory maker to get a PC manufacturer and is likely to be the first with own branded OCZ personal computers eventually.

OCZs goal is to deliver the highest performing products to consumers whether that is with premium components or total solutions. We are delighted to welcome Hypersonic PC, a company and brand well-known for their commitment to enthusiasts into the OCZ fold, said Ryan Petersen, chief executive of the OCZ Technology Group.

The acquisition of Hypersonic by OCZ emphasizes the move the memory company to broaden its market share with new sources to sell its memory modules and power supply units. Moreover, it is an indisputable proof that OCZ is do working not only on revenue sources, but also on the ways to get them with Hypersonic PCs.

Memory trick breaks PC encryption

Encrypted information held on a laptop is more vulnerable than previously thought, US research has shown. Scientists have shown that it is possible to recover the key that unscrambles data from a PC's memory. It was previously thought that data held in so-called "volatile memory" was only retained for a few seconds after the machine was switched off. But the team found that data including encryption keys could be held and retrieved for up toseveral minutes.

"It was widely believed that when you cut the power to the computer that the information in the volatile memory would disappear, and what we found was that was not the case," Professor Edward Felten of the University of Princeton told BBC World Service's Digital Planet programme. Volatile memory is typically used in random access memory (RAM), which is used as temporary storage for programs and data when the computer is switched on.

Dell, Intel, and Microsoft to push 'ReadyBoost,' Hybrid Drives

Companies including Dell, Microsoft, and Intel announced on Wednesday the formation of a new group to promote the adoption of nonvolatile memory, or NAND flash, in PC storage applications.

The Non-Volatile Memory Host Controller Interface (NVMHCI) Working Group, as it's being called, will be chaired by Intel and will provide a standard software programming interface for nonvolatile memory subsystems.

The group says the interface will be used by operating system drivers to access NAND flash memory storage in the applications such as hard drive caching and solid-state drives. Today, PCs already use this technology; "ReadyBoost" is what Microsoft calls its Vista disk caching technology that makes computers running the OS more responsive by using flash memory on a USB 2.0 drive, SD card, or other forms of flash memory. ..

Intel signs up vendors for Classmate PC in India

Intel has tied with three large Indian PC vendors to assemble the Classmate PC, a PC specially designed for schools. The three vendors -- HCL Infosystems, Wipro, and Zenith Computers -- will start shipping the product to Indian schools next month.

The Classmate PC will be sold only to schools, and not through retail channels to consumers, John McClure, Intel's director for marketing in South Asia said on Monday. The Classmate PC has been specially designed to work in a networked classroom environment, and comes with software and features that give the teacher in the classroom control over the dissemination of content to students' PCs, he said.

The Classmate PC, for example, does not have a hard disk. Instead it contains up to 2GB of NAND flash memory. Most of the content will reside on the teacher's PC, McClure said. ..

Reclaim Memory by Mastering Windows' Task Manager

The best way to speed up your PC is to give it more available memorybut freeing up as much of the memory you already have is cheaper and easier than cracking open your case to install a new stick of RAM. It takes a lot of memory to get a modern Windows system up and ... well, not doing anything in particular, really. Between cryptic system processes, confusing "helper" applications, and background utilities, a whole lot of who-knows-what gobbles up memory and slows down your work. While a lot of programs claim to optimize memory use and pare down processes, Windows' built-in Task Manager can do the job just fine, given the right tools and know-how. Today you'll extend and empower Windows' Task Manager to speed up your system by cutting out unnecessary memory hogs.

Notebook Makers Moving to 4 GB Memory As Standard

Digitimes reports that first-tier notebook manufacturers are increasing the standard installed memory from the current 1 GB to 4GB. They claim the move is an attempt to shore up the costs of DRAM chips, which are currently depressed because of a glut in market. The glut is supposedly due to increased manufacturing capacity and the slow adoption of Microsoft's Vista operating system. The proposed move is especially interesting, given that 32-bit Vista and XP cannot access 4 GB of memory. They have a practical 3.1 — 3.3 GB limit. With Vista SP1 it seems that Microsoft has decided to fix the problem by reporting the installed memory rather than the available memory.
