Microsoft Virtualization Day: Helping IT professionals do more with less

Nick White: Today we're making a series of announcements outlining our company-wide strategy for virtualization from the desktop to the datacenter.

<...> We have a vision that focuses on businesses employing our virtualization toolset to more simply and cost-effectively manage their IT environments. We're calling that vision Dynamic IT. Dynamic IT is aiming to help IT professionals get more out of their computing resources across both server and desktop environments. One of the benefits of this initiative is to enable IT managers to dynamically make changes or add capacity to their deployments in a matter of minutes instead of hours (or even days). In a phrase, Dynamic IT is about efficiently getting the necessary resources to users and computers at any given moment and with a minimum of hassle and effort. We expect this vision to result in a whole new era of datacenter and desktop PC management, all hinging on virtualization technologies and Windows.

Central to the vision of Dynamic IT is the concept of the Optimized Desktop. The Optimized Desktop refers to virtualizing a user's applications and profile together so that they follow that user, regardless of the location of the PC in use at the moment...

Update: Windows Optimized Desktop for the Enterprise

Chris Flores: We've been talking with a lot of organizations about what they need most from an optimized desktop experience, and we've been making great progress in delivering against those needs. I want to take this opportunity to share details on the Windows Optimized Desktop Scenarios and highlight some news.

If you've been reading this blog regularly, you will have seen updates on the work we're doing with the Optimized Desktop. I contributed a blog on this in January for our Virtualization Strategy Day and a second blog about the announcements we had made at the Microsoft Management Summit (MMS) in Las Vegas in late April. While there are many facets to the Optimized Desktop, the framework is based on technologies that enable decoupling the traditional desktop stack of hardware, operating system, applications, data, settings and user profiles, making desktop management more efficient and easing change and user migration.

Sandisk: Windows Vista not optimized for solid state drives

SanDisk said Monday that Windows Vista is not optimized for solid state drives, delaying the delivery of optimized drives until next year.

Solid state drives (SSDs) are used instead of hard disk drives in select high-end notebook PCs today such as the Apple MacBook Air and Toshiba Portege R500.

The next generation of SSDs will use multilevel cell (MLC) technology, which will require a more sophisticated controller--a crucial component in solid state drives. These drives will have capacities ranging up to 128GB, 160GB, and later, 256GB. MLC drives are expected to appear in a wider selection of notebooks later this year.

BitTorrent Optimized Microprocessor Announced

BitTorrent continues to expand beyond the computer. Today, the Taiwanese company IAdea announced that BitTorrent optimized microprocessors will become available soon. This makes it relatively easy to add BitTorrent support to other consumer electronics devices.

The microprocessor will enable hardware manufacturers to create devices that directly download .torrent files, and play files that are downloaded over BitTorrent. This is one step further in simplifying BitTorrent, and incorporating it in non-PC hardware.
John Wang, CEO of IAdea Corporation and developer of the new chip said in a response, "This new service architecture is infinitely scalable, delivers faster as more users join, and can be built at a fraction of the cost of a traditional server farm. We see this trend emerging as ‘Web 3.0′ where each consumer becomes part of a universal content storage and delivery system. Our new chip plays part in the new paradigm by making BitTorrent available efficiently and economically. You should not be surprised if you find your next car or cellphone enabled with our technology."

Facebook Optimized for Windows Mobile

Microsoft has released developer tools for the creation of optimized Facebook applications on Windows Mobile. See the developer tools here. The good thing about these tools is the integration with pretty much all the Windows Mobile applications themselves, so youll be able to let your Facebook apps take advantage of mobile media-sharing, contacts synchronization, and Outlook integration.

That makes it easier on the consumer end for the real-life utilization of certain applications found on Facebook. Either way, Facebook apps can ow be better optimized for use on Windows Mobile, but the benefit of this set of APIs is the option for a deeper integration.

AMD Highlights Optimized Integration between Quad-Core Opteron and Upcoming Microsoft Products

AMD today announced it is demonstrating platforms based on Quad-Core AMD Opteron™ processors, including features designed to help Microsoft Windows application developers optimize their software applications through tools in upcoming software products from Microsoft Corp. The technology demonstrations at the conference in Barcelona, Spain show new integration with Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 and Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors.

Ongoing collaboration throughout product development has ensured that Visual Studio 2008 tools will produce optimized code when compiling for Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors. This hardware/software collaboration is designed to ensure that software developers will enjoy improved instruction selection, optimized register allocation and enhanced 128-bit floating-point performance.

śThe Microsoft Visual Studio suite represents key building blocks in the Windows software development tools stack and is widely used by the Windows development community. This is why Visual Studio support for AMD processors is so important to us- it provides a highly productive environment for our customers to connect their hardware and software,ť said Earl Stahl, vice president of Software Development at AMD. śThe hardware/software collaboration is vital across the entire Microsoft Application Platform, so we are also working to ensure that Microsoft Windows Server 2008 and Microsoft SQL Server 2008 are optimized for Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors.ť

Samsung and Microsoft work to speed up SSDs

A few weeks ago SanDisk slated Windows Vista for not being optimized for SSD (Solid State Drive) storage hardware.
"As soon as you get into Vista applications in notebook and desktop, you start running into very demanding applications because Vista is not optimized for flash memory solid-state disk”. Said Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Eli Harari

SandDisk’s solution is to develop a new controller technology which will overcome these limitations but could take upto a year to reach the market.

Now according to PCworld Samsung has been in talks with Microsoft to increase the performance of SSDs using Vista and other MS OSes.

The speed and way in which SSDs fetch and cache data are different than hard drives, said Michael Wang, flash marketing manager at Sun.

Standard magnetic hard drives have a 512kb cluster size where as SSDs only have a 4kb cluster size. Samsung hopes to work with Microsoft to boost SSD performance on Windows by discovering optimal packet sizes for data transfers and the best ways to read and write files, for example.

SSDs have been hailed as the future storage medium for PC’s and internet connected devices, citing speed, power use and durability.
