My Office 12 Review

A few weeks ago the Microsoft Office team worked hard to get Beta 1 out of the door to beta testers via Microsoft Beta. This build was quite successful in all products of Office.

Unfortunately, Microsoft Office ?12? does not come with a new product but the same products that have many changes will keep testers busy until Beta 2! During the Beta phase of Office 2003, Code-named ?Office 11? and referred to as NGO (Next Generation of Office), brought new applications to the table. These applications were InfoPath and OneNote.

Review roundup: Moving into a new office suite

Whether you're using a Macintosh or a Windows computer, Microsoft Office is a staple throughout the world. While that doesn't mean everybody uses it, it does mean that almost everybody has to find something that works with it. And yet there are several reasons you might not want to get a copy of Microsoft Office itself.

One of those is the price. Few of us can happily afford to shell out $400 for the Standard edition of Office. Even the educational price of $150 is pricey, especially if you're a student trying to make ends meet.

Perhaps your PC doesn't have enough resources to handle Office, which is a notorious memory hog. Or maybe you have a second computer that you or other family members use only occasionally for document creation, and you don't want to shell out for another Office license.

Whatever the reason, it's good to know there are alternatives out there -- all cheaper than Microsoft's standard, and a couple that are even free. We sorted through nine contenders, some for Mac and some for PC (and a couple for both), to find out the best non-Office office suites available.

Microsoft confirmed the existence of a Windows 7 family pack today in a company blog post. Rumours of a Family Pack deal were originally reported by Neowin earlier this month. Packaging revealed for Windows Vista and Office 2007

Special thanks to Neowinian trekkie. for posting this in Back Page News, and Googler24022 for submitting this news to us.

Microsoft today revealed the retail packaging for Windows Vista and Office 2007, the eagerly awaited new products to be made widely available in early 2007.  The boxes boast a completely revised and redesigned packaging. Writing on the Windows Vista Team Blog, Nick White said:

"Designed to be user-friendly, the new packaging is a small, hard, plastic container that's designed to protect the software inside for life-long use. It provides a convenient and attractive place for you to permanently store both discs and documentation.

The new design will provide the strength, dimensional stability and impact resistance required when packaging software today. Our plan is to extend this packaging style to other Microsoft products after the launch of Windows Vista and 2007 Office system."

Keep reading for a glimpse of the designs for yourself.

Microsoft Office Has Pull

Try as they might to switch to open-source and Web-based alternatives, IT pros are sticking with Office.

"Just when I thought I was out, they pulled me back in."

It would be wrong to compare Microsoft to the family Michael Corleone was referring to in "Godfather Part III," but there's at least one organization that tried to end its association with Microsoft Office, only to be pulled back in.

In 2004, FN Manufacturing's Ed Benincasa began evaluating alternatives to Microsoft Office. In fact, he worked with eWEEK Labs to perform a side-by-side, user-based comparison of OpenOffice.org 1.1.1 and Microsoft Office 2003, to see whether an open-source option would meet his organization's needs. Benincasa and his staff later tested the ThinkFree suite and Version 2.0 of OpenOffice, as well as Linux on the desktop.

But, despite the Office alternatives' many attractive qualities, there was one requirement they just couldn't meet in the end: file format compatibility...

Foxconn pays family $44,000 for employee suicide

When it was reported than an employee at Foxconn committed suicide after being accused of losing an iPhone prototype China's labor laws came under scrutiny again. After first denying that it had interrogated the employee using techniques that many would consider criminal it has surfaced that the company paid $44,000 to the family for the death of their family member according to the New York Times. Company officials have said that "Several times he had some products missing, then he got them back" but would not go on to say what all the employee may have allegedly lost or misplaced in his past.

Office 14 to add more online document sharing

Microsoft won't be turning Office 14 into a completely Web-ified productivity suite, a la Google Docs. But it's practically a given that Microsoft will add more online collaboration/sharing capabilities to the individual point products that will comprise the client-based Office 14.

Microsoft execs are beginning to drop a few hints about the company’s plans to provide more document collaboration/sharing options for its PC-based desktop-productivity software.

Microsoft is beta testing an adjunct to Office (and non-Microsoft office suites) known as Office Live Workspace, which adds document collaboration/sharing capabilities to Word, Excel and PowerPoint (the XP, 2003 and 2007 releases). But Workspace doesn’t provide online/offline sync for Access, OneNote, Publisher or other more business-targeted members of the Office product family.

'Albany': New Microsoft 'home office' in the works?

Microsoft has begun inviting selected testers to be part of a beta of a new, consumer-focused Office-family product, codenamed "Albany."

The beta invitation for Albany is cryptic, according to testers who received the invite and asked not to be named. Albany will be aimed at home PC users, not business customers, and will include both a software and a services component. The individuals whove been invited into the private, limited beta so far are those whove previously beta-tested Office releases.

The Pirates Can't Be Stopped

This teenager hacked into the outfit charged with protecting companies like Sony, Universal, and Activision from online piracy—the most daring exploit yet in the escalating war between fans and corporate giants. Guess which side is winning.

The first time Ethan broke into MediaDefender, he had no idea what he had found. It was his Christmas break, and the high schooler was hunkered down in the basement office of his family's suburban home. The place was, as usual, a mess. Papers and electrical cords covered the floor and crowded the desk near his father's Macs and his own five-year-old Hewlett-Packard desktop. While his family slept, Ethan would take over the office, and soon enough he'd start taking over the computer networks of companies around the world. Exploiting a weakness in MediaDefender's firewall, he started poking around on the company's servers. He found folder after folder labeled with the names of some of the largest media companies on the planet: News Corp., Time Warner, Universal.
