09.09.2009Apple Releases OS X 10.5.7 Update to developers
Yesterday, Apple Inc. seeded Mac OS X 10.5.7 to developers. This update is the upcoming maintenance release for Leopard. Apple is asking the
developers to focus on 20 main areas in the OS to test. The build number of 10.5.7 is 9J22.
There have been rumors that Apple has made
nearly 70 changes in the update, some of which focus on syncing and networking improvements. A number of preferences and widgets have seen tweaks to
address performance issues and Apple has also addressed several issues related to RAW image handling. Another fix Apple has fixed is an issue with
Safari not accepting certain types of cookies.
Apple has noted that the public beta of Safari 4 will not properly install on 10.5.7.
This is expected to be the last update before Snow Leopard, which is expected to release in Q1 2009, although no specific release date has
surfaced.

27.02.2009Hackers Exploit Widget Security Holes
New attacks that exploit widgets and gadgets are imminent, according to the latest Web Security Trends Report from Finjan. Finjan's Malicious Code
Research Centre has studied changing trends in attacks used by hackers to gain information or control of a user's PC and predicts that the increasing
use of widgets is exposing computer users to a whole host of attacks. All types of widget environments, including operating systems, third-party
applications, and web widgets, have inadequate security models that could allow malicious widgets to run.
The Finjan research suggests that
attacks that exploit the insecurities of widgets are imminent, and that a revised security model should be explored to protect users. " As widgets
become common in most modern computing environments their significance from a security standpoint rises, " said Yuval Ben-Itzhak, chief technology
officer at Finjan. " Vulnerabilities in widgets and gadgets enable attackers to gain control of user machines, and should be developed with
security in mind. This attack vector could have a major impact on the industry, exposing corporations to new security considerations that need to be
dealt with. "

18.09.2007Apple Seeds OS X 10.5.7 Build 9J30 to Developers
In what has become an almost-weekly event, Apple has seeded a new version of Mac OS X 10.5.7, known as Build 9J30, to developers.
World of Apple
publishes the seed notes, which reveal that the lack of Safari 4 beta support is the only remaining issue Apple has chosen to highlight.
One week after the previous seed of Mac OS X 10.5.7 Apple has given developers another build this time in the form of 9J30. The rapid
development of Mac OS X 10.5.7 suggests a public release before the end of March.
Developers testing build 9J30 have been asked to focus
on new areas such as Flash Player, USB and Flash Drives, iCal and Widgets.
Apple seeded Build 9J22 on February 25th and Build 9J27 on
March 7th. The declining list of known issues, brief time intervals between seeds, and decreasing intervals of build numbers between those seeds
suggest that Apple is wrapping up development on OS X 10.5.7 and should see a release in the near future.

14.03.2009Eisner's advice to striking writers: Blame Steve Jobs, not the studios
In his keynote speech on Wednesday morning at the Media and Money conference hosted by Dow Jones and Nielsen, former Disney CEO
Michael Eisner talked about
writers as though they were a minority group that he didn't particularly understand well. "I like writers. Some of my best friends are writers," he
said as though attempting to save face. But nevertheless, his foremost epithet for the
ongoing Writer's Guild of America strike was "stupid."
"I see stupid strikes, and I see less stupid
strikes. I see smart strikes," Eisner said in the keynote, which was structured as a conversation with Neil P. Cavuto, senior vice president and
managing editor of Fox Business News. "This is a stupid strike."
The problem, Eisner said, is that the Writer's Guild is
lobbying for a bigger cut of the profits from digital distribution--and according to the former Disney chief, those profits simply aren't there.
Eisner, now the head of a private investment firm called The Tornante Company, has
launched an online video studio
called
Vuguru, and said that it's still more or less a fruitless labor. Vuguru's debut
series, a serial mystery called Prom Queen, "didn't make money," he said.

07.11.2007Turn any web widget into a Vista Gadget
The Amnesty Generator for
Windows is designed to easily
convert any embeddable web
site widget (including Google
Gadgets) into a Vista Sidebar
Gadget. Compared to Vista's
Gadget library's relatively
meager 275 gadgets, Google
Gadgets for your web page, for
example, currently sports over
3000 widgets. So basically,
Vista's gadget library just
grew from 275 to 275 plus 3000
plus whatever other web
widgets you can find on the
Internet. If this sounds
familiar to OS X users, it is
because Amnesty Generator is
also available for Dashboard.
The generator currently has a
few bugs (particularly in the
visual interface department),
but overall it works fairly
well.

02.12.2008MP3 spam on the rise, despite being utterly stupid
As antispam tools and e-mail users become more sophisticated, spammers are turning to new mediums to get their unwelcome messages through filters and
into inboxes. One of the more recent developments is spam with attached MP3 files. One security software vendor,
MXSweep, is reporting that MP3 spam now accounts for between 7 and 10 percent of all spam being sent.
The
files are given innocuous-sounding names like elvis.mp3, oursong.mp3, smashingpumpkins.mp3, or coolringtone.mp3. The payload is disappointing: a voice
recording touting the virtues of some corporate stock; in other words, it's pump-and-dump stock spam in a new format. It's also a dumb idea. The
overlap of those gullible enough to click on MP3 files of unknown provenance and those willing and able to invest in a stock that they've never heard
of is certainly minute. It's bound to be more of an annoyance than anything else, and seems unlikely to result in the desired stock purchases.
