Vista Aiding Linux Desktop, Strategist Says
Windows Vista has probably
created the single biggest
opportunity for the Linux
desktop to take market share,
Cole Crawford, an IT
strategist at Dell, said in an
address titled, "The Linux
DesktopFact, FUD or Fantasy?"
at the annual LinuxWorld
Conference & Expo.
For example, a number
of companies have moved back
to Windows XP after deploying
Vista, Crawford said, before
quoting Scott Granneman, an
author, entrepreneur and
adjunct professor at
Washington University in St.
Louis, as saying, "To mess up
a Linux box, you need to work
at it; to mess up your Windows
box, you just have to work on
it."
Microsoft has also owned
the desktop for more than 15
years, Crawford said, "and so
the only way for them to go is
down. But Linux can only go
up, and its growth potential
is enormous. While Linux only
has 1 percent of share on the
desktop versus Microsoft's
more than 90 percent, that is
changing, and the Linux
desktop is expected to gain
some share over the next two
years," he said.

VM enables "write-once, run anywhere" Linux apps
A startup in Alameda,
Calif. plans to release a kind
of holy software grail the
third or fourth week of June.
Lina said its dual-licensed
Lina virtual Linux machine
will run more or less normal
Linux applications under
Windows, Mac, or Linux, with a
look and feel native to
each.
The
concept recalls Java, which
has long promised "write
once, run anywhere"
compatibility. As with Java,
Lina users will first install
a VM specific to their
platform, after which they can
run binaries compiled not for
their particular OS, but for
the VM, which aims to hide
OS-specific characteristics
from the application.
In Lina's case, the VM is
essentially a Linux
environment that supports
standard C/C++ applications,
or even perl and python, if
their respective interpreters
are installed. CTO Nile
Geisinger explained, "You
have to compile binaries
specifically for Lina, but
it's fairly trivial, no
different than compiling
binaries for SuSE or Red
Hat."..

instances of Solaris on the same server, said Dan Roberts, Sun director of marketing for Solaris. With Solaris 10 8/07, being announced Tuesday, users
can run Red Hat Enterprise Linux, CentOS Linux, and Linux applications via Solaris Containers for Linux Applications.
"You can
now consolidate your Solaris and Linux apps onto one chassis," Roberts said. Solaris Containers debuted in Solaris 10 two-and a half years ago.
Virtualization, Roberts noted, has become a popular way to get more out of servers that had been running commonly at only a 10- to
15-percent utilization rate. ..
