26.07.2007Apple's Mac OS X, Safari register share gains in September
Apple's share of the worldwide computer installed based rose to over 6.6 percent last month, helped largely by growth of Intel-based systems,
according to just-released data from market research firm Net Applications. At the same time, the company's Safari web browser also posted healthy
share gains.
For the month of September, the percentage of Internet users running the Intel version of Apple's Mac OS X
operating system grew more than 14.5 percent to 3.23 percent, up from 2.82 percent in August. Some of those users appear to have upgraded from systems
running the PowerPC version of Mac OS X, which saw its share dip slight to 3.33 percent from 3.38 percent.
When combined,
however, Intel- and PowerPC-based Mac systems accounted for more than 6.61 percent of the worldwide computer installed base in September, according to
Net Applications. That represents a 40 percent surge from the same time a year ago, when both flavors of the Mac OS combined for just a 4.72 share. It
also represents a 7.5 percent increase from August, when both versions combined for a 6.15 percent share.

01.10.2007Windows 7 Migration from Windows XP
Jeff Alexander: Windows 7 has some great tools for migration from previous operating systems. Some that come to mind are Deployment Imaging and
Service Management (DISM), mounting VHDs natively in the operating system and User State Migration. But one of the best features in my opinion and
many of my mates in the community is the ability to boot natively to a VHD. This gives you flexibility in your migration scenarios and is one way you
can preserve your settings from the previous OS installation.
Dugie who is
based in Brisbane has done a
great
article on how to go from having Windows XP installed to having Windows 7 installed in the primary partition with Windows XP encapsulated into a
VHD. This can then be mounted in the OS and used later if needed in something like Virtual PC...

13.02.2007Businesses delay Vista plans until 2009
CIO Jury: "It could be a long wait"
Businesses remain unconvinced about the benefits of moving to Microsoft's Windows
Vista operating system and most are delaying any plans to upgrade until 2009 at the earliest.
One year after the business launch
of Vista, only one of silicon.com's 12-strong CIO Jury IT user panel said they had plans to move to the new OS in 2008.
Most
plan to stick with the stability of Windows XP and implement Service Pack 3 for that OS before they even start thinking about Vista.
Adrian Hughes, head of IS for insurance company Amlin, said: "We are sticking with XP and look to take XP SP3 in 2009. Vista not until 2011,
unless there is a good reason to migrate, by which time the next OS may be out so we would then skip a generation."

25.03.2009Mac OS X worm maker raps Apple on security
The anonymous researcher who
claims to have crafted a Mac
OS X worm said Tuesday that he
or she will report his
findings to Apple Inc., but
added that the Cupertino,
Calif. company "has a very
long way to go" on security.
Identified only as
the researcher behind the
Information
Security Sell Out blog, he
or she on Sunday announced
that a still-unpatched bug in
mDNSResponder, a component of
Apple's Bonjour automatic
network configuring service,
could be exploited by a worm.
Apple's May security update,
dubbed 2007-005, included a
fix for the mDNS bug.
"
is in the same
code base, obviously, but that
is where the similarity to the
recently patched issues
ends," said the Info Sec
researcher in an e-mail
interview. "When Apple fixed
the previous issues, they did
not take care of the entire
code base and there are a lot
of bugs there...some are
exploitable, like the one I am
using, while others are not.
But the fact remains that
Apple did a horrible job in
fixing this package." ..

Mac Trojan hits pirated copies of Adobe Photoshop
Although Apple's Macintosh environment has long been touted by its fans as "more secure" than Windows, a Trojan enabling remote control of
Mac machines struck a second time this week.
Earlier found only in illegal copies of Apple's iWork Suite, the Trojan has now turned up in
pirated copies of Adobe Photoshop for Mac OS X. Actually, the Trojan doesn't even exploit any OS vulnerability. Instead, it disguises itself as part
of the installer package for the application, so it is installed along with the application. Once installed, the malware launches a back door program,
thereby allowing an attacker to remotely conduct misdeeds such as copying data.
A tool for detecting and removing specifically this Trojan is
now available from SecureMac.com...

Dell to Sell Windows XP Professional with PCs Through 2009
In a letter to some of Dells customers, they said that " XP Professional is available for OEM installation on your Dell PC purchases through at
least 2009 and likely longer." The "official" OEM and retail end date from Microsoft is June 30, 2008, just a few weeks away. There has been
much talk of whether Microsoft would bow to the demand of the consumers to keep XP alive, and with this it is still hard to tell if Dell bought a
years stock of licenses ahead of time, or if this is the precursor to an announcement from Microsoft.
Dell's plan for users is to have
Windows XP Professional installed on their machines, but include the Vista install disk for when they are ready to upgrade. "With XP installed,
we will send media for both Vista and XP with each PC so that when you are ready to migrate to Vista you may at no addition upgrade cost." The
demand seems high, so let's hope others follow suit to allow companies the time and resources to fully upgrade.

Apple Releases OS X 10.5.7 Update to developers
Yesterday, Apple Inc. seeded Mac OS X 10.5.7 to developers. This update is the upcoming maintenance release for Leopard. Apple is asking the
developers to focus on 20 main areas in the OS to test. The build number of 10.5.7 is 9J22.
There have been rumors that Apple has made
nearly 70 changes in the update, some of which focus on syncing and networking improvements. A number of preferences and widgets have seen tweaks to
address performance issues and Apple has also addressed several issues related to RAW image handling. Another fix Apple has fixed is an issue with
Safari not accepting certain types of cookies.
Apple has noted that the public beta of Safari 4 will not properly install on 10.5.7.
This is expected to be the last update before Snow Leopard, which is expected to release in Q1 2009, although no specific release date has
surfaced.

down beta to show off to developers.

Apple Seeds OS X 10.5.7 Build 9J30 to Developers
In what has become an almost-weekly event, Apple has seeded a new version of Mac OS X 10.5.7, known as Build 9J30, to developers. World of Apple
publishes the seed notes, which reveal that the lack of Safari 4 beta support is the only remaining issue Apple has chosen to highlight.
One week after the previous seed of Mac OS X 10.5.7 Apple has given developers another build this time in the form of 9J30. The rapid
development of Mac OS X 10.5.7 suggests a public release before the end of March.
Developers testing build 9J30 have been asked to focus
on new areas such as Flash Player, USB and Flash Drives, iCal and Widgets.
Apple seeded Build 9J22 on February 25th and Build 9J27 on
March 7th. The declining list of known issues, brief time intervals between seeds, and decreasing intervals of build numbers between those seeds
suggest that Apple is wrapping up development on OS X 10.5.7 and should see a release in the near future.
