Windows Server 2008 R2 beta airs

Lost in the Windows 7 hype, Microsoft also released the beta of Windows Server 2008 R2, which is the companion to the client OS. The company is aligning Windows Server 2008 R2, which briefly was referred to as Windows Server 7, and the client OS Windows 7 although Microsoft officials have not said if they will ship together. But users who adopt both will get new security, network, and other features although some of those will require network upgrades like implementing IPv6. The R2 beta's integration with Windows 7 is high on the server's feature list.

Operations Manager 2007 Service Pack 1 News

The high level themes of the System Center Operations Manger 2007 Service Pack 1 are:
  • Address critical customer initiated issues including roll-up of all hotfixes
  • Make the product easier to support
  • Make the product easier to use
  • Make the product easier to deploy
In the beginning of November there will be a public Release Candidate (RC). This release (RC) is fully upgradable to the final RTM version of the Service Pack. The reasons the product team is making the RC of the Service Pack generally available are:
  • To give customers evaluating OpsMgr 2007 advance access to the SP to aid in their evaluation and proof of concept deployments
  • To give current OpsMgr 2007 customers that may have hotfixes in their environment an opportunity to test the Service Pack and provide feedback on it
  • Ultimately to make sure that the final RTM release of the Service Pack is of the highest possible quality.
The final RTM version of the Service Pack is targeted for mid-February 2008. This version of the Service Pack will be able to be applied to upgrade the originally released RTM version of Operations Manager 2007 and it will also upgrade Operations Manager 2007 running the Release Candidate of SP1.

Announcing Windows Server 2008 R2

Windows Server 2008 R2 showed its pretty face at the Professional Developers Conference today, here in Los Angeles. Hi there, my names Oliver Rist and Im a new technical product manager on the Windows Server team. Im down here in La-La Land heaving great sighs of satisfaction as we unveil the first sneak peeks of pre-beta Windows Server 2008 R2. Though this release is right in line with our announced roadmap strategy for future Server releases, there are several items of note with R2:

First and foremost, 32-bit is done. History. Archives. Windows Server 2008 R2 is the first Windows OS platform to go 64-bit only, and frankly it was high time. Customers have been unable to purchase a 32-bit server CPU for over two years now, and the advancements in CPU architectures really dictated that we squeeze as much performance out of customers hardware purchases as possible. The move to 64-bit is a first step.

Youll also find that weve aligned R2 development around four core technology pillars...

Virtual Server 2005 Beta Program Comes to a Close

The Virtual Server 2005 R2 Beta program has come to a close. One of the most interesting notes is that the product name has been changed from Virtual Server 2005 SP1 to Virtual Server 2005 R2.

"When we sat back and took a look at all the new functionality we added in this release, we realized that it was much more than a typical service pack."

Virtual Server 2005 R2 Beta testers will be offered a free copy of Virtual Server
2005 R2 Enterprise Edition (both x86 and x64 editions) in appreciation of the feedback sent.

Some of the key features include:
. Clustering virtual machines across hosts
. Host clustering support
. Greater Scalability - 64-bit (x64) host support
. Improved Performance - Up to 50% drop in CPU utilization
. Improved Manageability - PXE network boot support
. Better Interoperability - Linux guest support..

Microsoft Outlines System Center Road Map

Microsoft plans to ship its long-awaited Operations Manager 2007 application management software on April 1, which will mark the first product released under the System Center brand. Formerly known as Microsoft Operations Manager v3, System Center Operations Manager 2007 provides end-to-end event, service and application monitoring and reporting. The platform supports Service Model Language (SML) for monitoring IT and software services -- required for service-level agreements -- and features audit collection services for compliance auditing and a customizable reporting tool.

At the Microsoft Management Summit, which started Tuesday in San Diego, the Redmond, Wash., software giant also announced a technology licensing agreement with EMC that will bolster the network management capabilities of System Center Operations Manager 2007. As part of the deal, Microsoft said it will integrate EMC's Smarts network discovery and health monitoring software into a future version of Operations Manager.

Trojan, distributed over torrent, blocks torrent sites

A trojan named Troj/Qhost-AC, has been spotted on torrent sites labeled as a keygen for popular software. But in a strange surprise, the trojan would modify the users host file, rather than generating a key, changing popular torrent web sites like, The Pirate Bay, Suprbay (The Pirate Bay forum) and Mininova, the two most popular torrent sites on the internet to 127.0.0.1, making it impossible to visit these sites. The Trojan caused pop-ups on users screens and played a sound file saying "downloading is wrong". The Trojan didn't install any other spyware or malware onto the victims PC, other than blocking the three web sites, something that many users thought was strange.

Microsoft.com moves to Windows Server 2008 R2 beta

Many tend to forget that the same day the Windows 7 beta was released, the Windows Server 2008 R2 beta went public as well, and the same goes for the Windows 7 Ecosystem Readiness Program. The media is letting Windows 7 overshadow Server 2008 R2, but Microsoft isn't taking much notice. As with any Windows Server release, the software giant is eating its own dogfood: the company recently finished rolling out the operating system on its homepage, though it's not clear which build the company is running. Office 2010 Has Leaked!

The Technical Preview of Office 2010 has officially leaked! WZor.net uploaded a torrent a few hours ago for both the x86 and x64 versions of the new Office suite.

Without further ado, I present:

Microsoft Office 2010 (x86)

AND

Microsoft Office 2010 (x64)

The x64 torrent doesn't seem to be very active at the moment, but over time, as it gains more seeders, hopefully it will pick up. We were achieving speeds of up to 1000kbps during our download of the x86 version, so the torrent is going strong... That is, until the rest of the world picks up on it... Download quickly!

While you eagerly await the end of your download, check out a screenshot gallery from WZor as well (the version pictured in the screenshots is the x64 version).

The links in this article were obtained from WZor's homepage, http://wzor.net/indexx.html

Australia to test blocking all P2P and Bit Torrent traffic

Australia has been known to have high levels of censorship. It should come as no surprise to those in the land down under that the government is planning to filter P2P and Bit Torrent traffic in live pilot tests. Senator Conroy went on the record saying "technology that filters peer-to-peer and Bit Torrent traffic does exist and it is anticipated that the effectiveness of this will be tested in the live pilot trial". It is a drastic step to filter out all P2P and Bit Torrent traffic as it assumes that those channels are only used for piracy. One example of legitimate use is the popular online game World of Warcraft.
