2.3.2009Court Ruling Supports Claims That Microsoft's First OS Was Stolen

In a book on American

Here's a question for you: what hardware does it take to run an entirely new, pre-release Windows operating system and 1TB-worth of SQL Server 2008

This question seems simple to answer, but the challenge comes in locating the requisite hardware.
One problem that always arises when using any beta operating system is: no hardware manufacturer will certify kit to run the new operating system
before that operating system has reached its release code form, because last minute changes may interfere with the certification process.

28.04.2007Vista attacked by 13-year-old virus
A batch of laptops pre-installed with Windows Vista Home Premium was found to have been infected with a 13-year-old boot sector virus.
Those of you with a long memory will vividly recall the year 1994: Nirvana's lead singer Kurt Cobain died, South Africa held its first
multi-racial elections, and Tony Blair became leader of the Labour party. Oh, and Microsoft's operating system was the quaint, pre-NT Windows for
Workgroups.
But it was a year that also saw the arrival of a boot sector computer virus known as Stoned.Angelina which moved the
original master boot record to cylinder 0, head 0, sector 9.
It would appear that this teenage virus has not yet been consigned
to the history books.

30.01.2009Automated System Recovery (ASR) in Windows Server 2008 and Vista SP1
Automated System Recovery or ASR as it is more commonly known is the Windows API set to capture the configuration of disks and volumes on a system and
restore them in bare metal recovery scenarios. During such recoveries, backup applications (requesters) invoke ASR to restore the disks and volumes
prior to putting back the operating system, applications and data.
For the purpose of bare metal recovery scenarios, the disks
and volumes in a system can be divided into two broad categories “ critical and non-critical. Critical volumes are those containing system state or
operating system components and include the boot and system volumes. A volume containing the Active Directory database on a domain controller is also
an example of a critical volume. Critical disks as youve likely guessed are those that contain critical volumes.
Once the
operating system and data have been put back, requesters may perform more recovery operations after the system is booted into the restored operating
system.

12.02.2008A jailbreak for Google's Android
Hackers have found a way to circumvent controls in the Google Android operating system used on T-Mobile's G1 mobile phone, allowing them to get
around restrictions created by the phone's designers.
The hack gives G1 users a way to read data on parts of the phone that are
normally walled off and could be used to install new programs, or even a new operating system, on the mobile phone. Currently, programs for the open
source Android operating system must be written in Java, rather than other popular programming languages such as C or C++.

06.11.2008New Neowin Poll: Has your 360 died on you?
Do you say a little prayer before you turn on your 360?
Not one to help you vanquish Earth of Covenant invaders or anything like that, but
one that says "please don't let me see red." If you do, you're probably not alone. While I can say that my 360 has been flawless since
I've owned it (except for recent "issues" with Xbox Live getting slammed) -- I've only had it a week. Up until Christmas I only had two
local friends (my brother-in-law-to-be and my boss) with 360s and over the course of this last year they have both got the dreaded "red ring of
death" -- both of them were early adopters to the platform. Both had their boxes sent to Microsoft to be "fixed".
I've been reading
reports online, including a few from our forums, of previous RROD owners having the issue return. Then last night during a Call of Duty 4 match with
Neowin Moderator bangbang023 (and other Neowin member who's name escapes me) my brother-in-law-to-be called me up to inform me that his machine
has received it's second RROD. This got me a little frustrated.
So my question is, how many RRODs have you had? Please feel free to
detail in the forum discussion
here. Please be sure to respond to the poll at the right.

16.02.2009The Five Pillars of Windows 7
The old idea where Microsoft bases an operating system on central pillars? It's back, and with a complete refocus of priorities. Looking back, the
original pillars of Longhorn were Avalon (WPF), Indigo (WCF), and WinFS, as well as the pseudo-pillar which was referred to as "Fundamentals."
No longer does Microsofts basis for an operating system focus on key architectural developments such as the various frameworks of
yore. Now, it seems, pillars are at least tentatively being redefined as design and usability concepts upon which to build the operating system.
