First impressions: Opera 9.5 alpha a worthy contender

Opera has always defied conventional wisdom: in the past, the company was able to survive by selling web browsers when Microsoft and Netscape were giving them away. More recently, the company shifted to giving away its desktop browser, pulling revenue from sales in the mobile arena and affiliate deals integrated into the browser. The company has proven to be rugged and focused on quality.

Now, the company has released alpha builds of the latest version of their desktop product, Opera 9.5 (code-named Kestrel). While it doesn't quite add enough features to justify a full version number bump, it is a welcome update for any Opera fan and may well get users of more popular browsers to take a second look. Despite being an "alpha" release, we've found a solid improvement to an already very strong browser.

Opera Gears Up to Release Opera 9.5 Alpha, with Several Upgrades

Opera is getting ready to launch its alpha version of Opera 9.5 tomorrow, and some of the new features indicate that this upcoming release will prove to be significant.

The rendering engine for Opera 9.5, nicknamed Kestrel, has been greatly improved, giving you better speed, better CSS3 support, and improved Ajax compatibility. This is the same rendering engine that is used by Wiis Internet Channel browser, as well as Opera Mini 4 Beta. Site compatibility for Kestrel has also been improved, as Opera has fixed bugs with Google and Wordpress sites, as well as issues with Javascript libraries.

For sites that still cant be opened in the Opera browser, youre presented with the option to right-click in order to open it in another browser. This option is available for some files as well, but full support hasnt been added for this feature just yet. Opera 9.5 also has the option to privately synchronize your bookmarks, giving you access from any computer. Theres also a full history search option, which scours through URLs and text of sites youve already visited.

In other Opera news, the Opera Mini 4 Beta has recently been released for mobile browsing. See more details on Opera 9.5 alpha here.

Opera Public Acid3 build available

Lars Erik Bolstad: Two days ago Opera reached a 100/100 pass rate on the Acid3 test for the first time and we published a screenshot on the Desktop team blog to back up the claim. I am pleased to announce the first
public build with a 100/100 pass rate and pixel-perfect rendering! The build can be downloaded here: Windows, Linux.

As you will notice, this is not a regular Opera desktop build, but a version of WinGogi desktop. This is the Windows version of the reference builds that we use internally for testing Opera's platform-independent
Core. "Desktop" means it is compiled with the same feature set as our regular desktop browser. Still, we do not recommend using this build for regular Web surfing as it lacks some of the security-related features
found in our regular desktop versions.

Opera improves bookmark synching in new browser beta

Opera Software has released a beta of its upcoming desktop browser, code-named Kestrel, which can synchronize bookmarks between a PC and a mobile device. The update to Opera 9.5, released Thursday, also fixes "hundreds of bugs" that were in the alpha version, said Huid Kleinhout, desktop team manager, in Operas desktop blog. "Web site rendering has been significantly improved, along with performance, stability and usability," he wrote.

The synching feature, called Opera Link, can sychronize bookmarks between Operas mobile and desktop browsers. When a person uses Opera Mini 4.5, a mobile browser thats also in beta, and the desktop browser, new bookmarks are copied to a server and made available in both browsers. The bookmarks can also be accessed from any other browser by logging into the Opera Link Web page.

Opera 10-year Online Anniversary Giveaway

In a effort to boost market share and encourage more people to check out alternative web browsers, Opera Software ASA is celebrating its 10 year birthday by giving Opera away for free. Starting at 9AM EST time this morning, the company is giving out http://my.opera.com/community/ party/reg.dml]free registration codes to anyone who asks for one. The promotion will last 24 hours, and includes free registration for desktop versions of Opera for Windows, OS X, FreeBSD, Solaris and Linux. "On this day we celebrate our users. From the very beginning, we've consistently worked closely with our community to make sure we deliver the best Internet experience. In short, we would never have been where we are today without all the people who have volunteered their time and energy to Opera," said Jon S. von Tetzchner, Opera Software CEO.

Opera is a quality web browser with a die-hard community of supporters behind it. Long before there was Mozilla, there was Opera, stalwartly beating the drum of web standards. However, Opera could never gain enough steam to truly challenge Microsoft???a role that seems to have been reserved for the always-free Firefox. ..
