DirectX 11 coming to Vista
As with Windows Vista, the newest version of Windows brings with it a newer version of Microsoft's DirectX. Windows 7 was released with Direct X 11 support, and it was initially thought that Direct X 11 support would remain a 7-only technology.

19.06.2008Linux Comparison: openSUSE
Previous to writing this comparison, I have only ever used Ubuntu and Fedora. Considering Ubuntu's popularity and reputation for being easy to
use, I was expecting openSUSE to be nowhere near as good. From the moment I was greeted with "Welcome" as the LiveCD booted, I knew I was going to
be proven wrong. View: Part 1 of "Linux Comparison" - Ubuntu An install for all. The installation was quick and painless. The installer correctly
detected the existing Linux partitions, and also proposed that I did not format my home partition (for the uninitiated, this is more or less the "My

04.12.2008OpenSUSE 10.2 Goes Gold
Despite loud arguments over
Novell and Microsof's
relationship, and attempts by
Ubuntu to talk OpenSUSE
developers into coming over to
their distribution, OpenSUSE
10.2 has arrived sooner than
expected. This latest
community Linux distribution
from Novell, SUSE, and friends
is based on a 2.6.18.2 Linux
kernel. Users can choose
between the KDE 3.5.5 or GNOME
2.16.1 desktop environments,
both of which run on top of
the X.Org 7.2rc2 windowing
system.
When you
first install openSUSE, the
YaST partitioner now defaults
to create new file systems
using the ext3 file system. In
the past, SUSE distributions
had defaulted to using
ReiserFS. If you plan on using
OpenSUSE as a server, you'll
find the usual popular server
applications ready to go.
These include the Apache 2.2.3
webserver, and the MediaWiki
1.8.2 wiki software.

made several promises of more extras which resulted in the company launching UltimatePC.com which now redirects to the Vista home-page.

10.08.2006Vista, Acronis TrueImage 11 and GRUB Error 22
Jonathan Schlaffer: Those of you with Vista know that there can be boot problems after you have cloned your existing installation to a faster or
larger hard drive (it works best when its both). And, sometimes after cloning, there can be
activation issues as well
which I have encountered in the past.
Some say those issues are gone due to updates to the way WGA (Windows Genuine Advantage)
works in Vista but Microsoft should rename their DRM protection system to Windows Genuine Annoyance.
These problems did not exist
under XP but it appears that Vista places undue importance on the hard drive when deciding whether or not to deactivate itself. I am aware that SP1
changes the way WGA works slightly but that cannot change what has happened in the past.

25.12.2007DX11 Will Be Included With 7
Despite what was talked about this week, it has been confirmed that DirectX 11 will be included with Windows 7.
Here are a few notes from
PCGH:
"One of the APIs, Direct 3D 11, has been revealed to include GPGPU, tessellation and improved multi-threading support, the latter
meaning better gaming for those who use multi-core processors. Tessellation and Shader Model 5.0 will require hardware which supports
the new
API, but for the stubborn and/or cheap folk, parts of Direct3D 11 will be supported on 9/10/10.1-class hardware."
Also, unlike the
release of DX10 relating to XP, Vista users will be able to take advantage of DX11 too, because there will also be a Vista release.
This
will most likely make DX11 more widely used than DX10 simply because it's available on more platforms.

26.11.2008Enable Aurora Bootscreen in Windows Vista
The original Vista Bootscreen is very similar to Windows 2000, and is very bland and boring (you know, with the little catepillar bar scrolling from
left-to-right). But did you know that Vista comes with a much better highly visual bootscreen? Did you know how easy it is to enable it? No?
Microsoft may not have enabled this by default because of potential hardware issues, but that doesnt make sense because the minimum video card
requirements to even run Vista should handle the new bootscreen without any problem. In either case, here is how to make Vista look that much cooler
with the "Aurora" bootscreen...

25.05.2006Vista Capable scandal
Many will remember a few years back before the launch of Vista, Microsoft decided to tout some PC's as Vista capable. This seemed an innocent and
easy way to boost sales but what happened is a different story. The Vista capable idea was a genuine one at heart. It was designed to allow
consumer to buy new PC's with confidence that the new computer would run the latest version of Vista when it launched. The idea was genius for
Microsoft, they could sell more PC's (indirectly getting sales of the OS and software) and have consumers know they would be able to upgrade with
confidence. What happened was that Intel got in the way.

18.11.200810 Ways Vista is more annoying with Windows 7 available
We all know Windows Vista got a bit of a bum rap. Its biggest sin was that it shipped earlier than it should and its reputation has never recovered.
However, with Windows 7 now out, those of us who have to switch between PCs now find ourselves discovering completely new things about Windows Vista
that are annoying -- because they are things that Windows 7 made so much better. Here's our list... #1 "Program not responding" Windows
Vista loved to throw programs under the bus for not responding. This was especially true of Windows Explorer which regularly would fade out a window
because it was trying to access a network resource.

05.11.2009WinXP SP3 Yields Performance Gains Over Vista SP1 Again
exo.blog has at
the request of their members re-run
the
original OfficeBench test, this time with 2GB of RAM in the test system. Unfortunately the outcome is unchanged bar a 4% improvement on the
previous score. One can argue that Windows XP system requirements are quite a bit lower than its successor, and thats probably got a lot to do with
it. This, coupled with claims that Vista SP1
will
not improve on performance but will in fact be all about stability and reliability instead, doesn't offer much hope for those people on older
systems.
Make of it what you will, I personally don't have performance issues at all. I use Vista with 2GB of RAM and I have a Sandisk
2GB memory stick that is used for the "Ready Boost" feature, maybe they should re-run the test with that scenario.
Chris Pirillo
had this to say on all those negative articles
surrounding Windows Vista, enjoy!

28.11.2007KDevelop4 shaping up
KDevelop4 is the Qt4 port of successful open source IDE (Integrated Development
Environment) KDevelop. Though it is more than just a port, in fact it is almost a complete rewrite as you will soon learn.
It is clear,
just by looking at our
neowin forums that people, to this
day, are still in search of a better IDE. Well lookout guys because this is an IDE you may want to keep track of. It has all the advanced features of
a modern development suite you have come to expect plus some new ideas. Most importantly, it now
runs on Windows too.
The
revamping of KDevelop had a late start but managed to pick up quickly with a
new user interface being designed at the start of last year. Improving on the dullness of the original KDevelop, this project
utilised the Qt4 toolkit to provide a easy to use and beautiful interface consistent with KDE4.
Thanks to David Nolden (
zwabel), the code completion of KDevelop4 has been
enhanced to the
point where it perhaps surpasses that of the better-known IDEs in terms of flexibility, ease of use and convenience. David realised that there seems
to be two types of developers. Those that prefer code completion to speed up their writing process and those that prefer code completion to be a form
of 'in-line documentation', providing details of the classes and libraries they are using and the options available to them. In this
modernised code completion, he believes all users are catered for.
KDevelop4 has been in development for roughly two years now with KDE4.2
fast approaching, yet the project still carries the 'alpha' moniker. Binaries for the latest KDevelop4 Alpha 3 were released for Opensuse
yesterday.

11.11.2008Linux Comparison: Fedora and conclusion
Fedora My first experience of Fedora came with Fedora 7, not long after I first used Ubuntu. I had difficulties getting it set up correctly,
especially when it came to downloading new applications, but once it was running the way I liked, I much preferred it to Ubuntu. My first impressions
of Fedora 10 are good, but there are some clear issues that need addressing, especially when it is put up against Ubuntu and openSUSE. Installation a
mixed experience. At first I didn't think I was going to be able to review Fedora. The LiveCD loaded to 100 percent within a few minutes, then sat
there, apparently doing nothing.
