23.12.2008Windows 7 supports search plugins
When Vista was released, its search features were significantly better than XP's. It's time to take a look at what Microsoft is planning to do for
search for Windows 7; according to information Microsoft has released to developers, search in Windows 7 can go beyond a local network:
"Windows 7 supports searching for documents beyond the user's own PC. Developers and IT professionals can enable their search engines, document
repositories, web applications, and proprietary data stores to be searched from Windows 7 without needing to write and deploy client code. This
enables end users to search their corporate intranet or the web as easily as they can search for their local files—all from within the same familiar
Windows interface."
Furthermore, developers can add Windows 7 compatible OpenSearch support to any existing searchable web application
by adding RSS or ATOM output (the desktop client can then have a Search Connector for the service). SharePoint Search Server can also query these
compatible OpenSearch services (as shown at PDC 2008).

06.11.2008PGP creator shows off VoIP encryption app
PGP creator Phil Zimmermann is
now focusing his crypto skills
on making VoIP calls more
secure. At the Black Hat
security convention in Las
Vegas, he showed off his
latest version of the Zfone
client that encrypts VoIP
calls. Zfone can be easily
used with most VoIP clients
and, according to Zimmermann,
will appear in future
hardware-based VoIP phones.
Zfone itself
is actually a daemon that runs
under your VoIP client in the
IP protocol stack. It
implements the ZRTP protocol
which is an extension of the
regular VoIP RTP protocol.
Zimmermann, along with Alan
Johnston and PGP CTO Jon
Callas, submitted the protocol
to the IETF as a draft
standard last year.
Zimmermann told
us, śYou can still use your
favorite client on top and
Zfone secures the call.ť
Basically
you can think of Zfone as a
VPN client for your VoIP
because it provides an
encrypted tunnel for calls.
The protocol adds four bytes
of authentication on every
voice packet and encrypts the
RTP data payload with AES
128-bit or higher encryption.
Zimmermann said the protocol
is lightweight and modern
computers shouldnt experience
any noticeable CPU slowdown...

28.08.2007The Pirate Bay Sees a Future Without BitTorrent
The guys from The Pirate Bay are always working on interesting side-projects, but there is one in particular that’s so significant, it might be
the future of filesharing. For a while now, they have been working on a brand new protocol - which may come to replace BitTorrent in the near future.
Why a new protocol? Well, the current BitTorrent protocol is developed and maintained by BitTorrent Inc. This company, founded by BitTorrent inventor
Bram Cohen, recently decided to close the source of some newer additions to the protocol. According to The Pirate Bay, this gives them too much power
and influence.
Another reason for a new and improved protocol is the massive number of spammers and anti-piracy organizations that abuse
the BitTorrent protocol, either to make money or to bust people who download infringing material. The new protocol will be designed with these
potential problems in mind. The protocol will most likely use the .p2p file extension compared to the .torrent extension BitTorrent uses right now.
The good thing is that the .p2p files will be backwards compatible which should ensure a smooth transition from .torrent to .p2p files.

26.10.2005Microsoft Announces Changes for Accessing Hotmail with Outlook Express
Important news if you currently access your Windows Live Hotmail with Outlook Express, come June 30th. this will no longer be possible.
A change is coming for users that access Hotmail with Outlook Express. Outlook Express uses a protocol called DAV (Distributed Authoring
and Versioning protocol) to access a Windows Live™ Hotmail® e-mail account. DAV, like POP3 or IMAP, is the way that a mail client communicates with
a web-based mail server.
As of June 30, 2008, Microsoft is disabling the DAV protocol and you will no longer be able to access
your Hotmail Inbox via Outlook Express. As an alternative, we recommend that you download Windows Live Mail, a free desktop e-mail client that has the
familiarity of Outlook Express and much more.

18.04.2008Mozilla to fix 9-month-old Firefox bug as concerns grow
Mozilla Corp. will patch Firefox against a nine-month-old protocol handler bug, its chief security executive announced Friday, after researchers
demonstrated that the vulnerability was more serious than first thought.
The bug is another Uniform Resource Identifier (URI)
protocol handler flaw, and the news of an impending fix comes on the heels of Microsoft patching Windows to repair problems in the handlers it
registers. Protocol handlers -- "mailto:" is among the most familiar -- let browsers launch other programs such as an e-mail client through commands
embedded in a URL.
But Firefox's jar: protocol handler (the ".jar" extension stands for Java ARchive, a ZIP-style compression
format) does not check that the files it calls are really in that format. Attackers can exploit the flaw by uploading any content -- malicious code,
for example, or a malformed Office document -- to a Web site, then entice users to that site and its content with a link that includes the jar:
protocol. Because the content executes in the security context of the hosting site, if that site (eg., a commercial photo sharing service) is trusted,
then the malicious code runs as trusted within the browser too.

19.11.2007File Sharing Protocols to Diverge Next Year
In case you missed the whats going on in the somewhat underground world of torrenting and file sharing with all the talk of
Facebook-Microsoft and the supposed
tech bubble, theres a bit of a spat brewing. Recently, part
of the BitTorrent protocol has been turned closed source, and The Pirate Bay has asserted that this gives BitTorrent, Inc. too much power.
In response, Pirate Bay has been working on a brand new protocol that they hope may come to replace BitTorrent in the near future. The
protocol will likely use the .p2p file extension (as opposed to the .torrent extension in use now).
Casual users of torrenting
shouldnt see too much interruption in service, as many BitTorrent clients pledge support for the new protocol, and the .p2p protocol promises to be
backwards compatible with all .torrents
The new protocol is still in the development phase, but a release may come as soon as
early next year. It presently remains nameless, but you can read up a bit on it at
the design page.
