29.09.2005Sun will Support OpenOffice.org
Sun Microsystems on Monday plans to announce that it will provide support for the OpenOffice.org productivity software suite, citing a wave of
momentum behind the open-source project. The support, which starts at US$20 per user per year, will be offered to companies that distribute
OpenOffice.org, not directly to end-users, according to Mark Herring, senior director of marketing for StarOffice/OpenOffice.org and Network.com.
"For a lot of distributors, they wanted to distribute OpenOffice.org and had no option for back-line support," he said. OpenOffice.org and
StarOffice, Sun's accompanying commercial product, are compatible with Microsoft Office and identical in terms of capabilities, which include word
processing, spreadsheets and presentation software. But until now, Sun only supported StarOffice.

05.12.2007IBM joins OpenOffice.org community
The OpenOffice.org community today announced that IBM will be joining the community to collaborate on the development of OpenOffice.org software. IBM
will be making initial code contributions that it has been developing as part of its Lotus Notes product, including accessibility enhancements, and
will be making ongoing contributions to the feature richness and code quality of OpenOffice.org. Besides working with the community on the free
productivity suite's software, IBM will also leverage OpenOffice.org technology in its products.
"In the seven years since Sun
founded the project, OpenOffice.org has fueled and filled the need for document data and productivity tools that are open and free. Open source
software and ODF are having a profound impact around the world, with numerous communities and organizations coming together to support these
initiatives and governments, and corporations and schools standardizing on the software.
We look forward to working with
IBM and the other members of OpenOffice.org to ensure that this momentum continues. We invite others to join us in the community and participate in
building the future as OpenOffice.org and ODF continue to gain popularity across the planet, said Rich Green, Executive Vice President, Software at

OpenOffice.org has issued a patch for a security vulnerability affecting several versions of its open-source office suite. The latest version, 2.4.1,
is available for download on the organization's Web site.
The vulnerability is a memory problem called a heap overflow, OpenOffice.org
said in an advisory. It can be exploited if an attacker sends someone an OpenOffice.org document that can take advantage of the flaw, which would then
allow the hacker "to execute arbitrary commands on the system with the privileges of the user running OpenOffice.org."

21.10.2008Hands on with the new online version of OpenOffice.org
After going
premium and suffering some community
fragmentation, the OpenOffice.org open source office suite is being taken in a new direction by a company named Ulteo. A
brainchild of Gael Duval, founder of Mandriva Linux, Ulteo's mission is to serve as a platform for putting applications onto the web. Using this
approach, Ulteo has released a public beta of Online OpenOffice.org, which quite literally puts OpenOffice.org inside a browser.
There are of course some real advantages to Ulteo's offering, not the least of which is overcoming platform-specific issues, but like any major
desktop software application that gets stuffed into a browser, Online OpenOffice.org has its drawbacks. Let's take a look at the pros and cons of the
latest productivity suite to go online.
winbeta.org -
17.12.2007OpenOffice.org 3.0 Now avaliable straight from your browser
The latest and full featured version of OpenOffice.org3.0 is now available through
Ulteo.com
using a web browser with only a single click of a mouse. No download or installation process of the productivity suite is required. This new service
by Ulteo offers many benefits for users of the productivity suite, and is compatible with any operating system that can run Firefox 2.0+ or
InternetExplorer6.0+.
Making OpenOffice.org3.0 available through a browser should also help accelerate its adoption by an even broader
userbase. Users can introduce OpenOffice.org3.0 to others via email, invite them to discover OpenOffice.org with just one click, and can give a
personal tour of the program in real time. Invitations are sent via email and allow access in either read only or full edit mode, simply by clicking
on a link in the email. Using Ulteo’s service, users can exploit features of OpenOffice.org which may be missing from their current desktop
software. Forexample, OpenOffice.org canread and write MicrosoftOffice files, and generate .pdf format files without requiring any additional
software. OpenOffice.org also reads and writes documents in Open Document Format, the ISO approved standard for office
documents, which can only
be read in Microsoft Office after installing a plug-in.
