OpenOffice.org has issued a patch for a security vulnerability affecting several versions of its open-source office suite. The latest version, 2.4.1,
is available for download on the organization's Web site.
The vulnerability is a memory problem called a heap overflow, OpenOffice.org
said in an advisory. It can be exploited if an attacker sends someone an OpenOffice.org document that can take advantage of the flaw, which would then
allow the hacker "to execute arbitrary commands on the system with the privileges of the user running OpenOffice.org."

30.08.2005Sun will Support OpenOffice.org
Sun Microsystems on Monday plans to announce that it will provide support for the OpenOffice.org productivity software suite, citing a wave of
momentum behind the open-source project. The support, which starts at US$20 per user per year, will be offered to companies that distribute
OpenOffice.org, not directly to end-users, according to Mark Herring, senior director of marketing for StarOffice/OpenOffice.org and Network.com.
"For a lot of distributors, they wanted to distribute OpenOffice.org and had no option for back-line support," he said. OpenOffice.org and
StarOffice, Sun's accompanying commercial product, are compatible with Microsoft Office and identical in terms of capabilities, which include word
processing, spreadsheets and presentation software. But until now, Sun only supported StarOffice.

Google plans to hire
programmers to improve
OpenOffice.org, a
demonstration of its affinity

also shows sound practical

Ope

The OpenOffice.org community today announced that IBM will be joining the community to collaborate on the development of OpenOffice.org software. IBM
will be making initial code contributions that it has been developing as part of its Lotus Notes product, including accessibility enhancements, and
will be making ongoing contributions to the feature richness and code quality of OpenOffice.org. Besides working with the community on the free
productivity suite's software, IBM will also leverage OpenOffice.org technology in its products.
"In the seven years since Sun
founded the project, OpenOffice.org has fueled and filled the need for document data and productivity tools that are open and free. Open source
software and ODF are having a profound impact around the world, with numerous communities and organizations coming together to support these
initiatives and governments, and corporations and schools standardizing on the software.
We look forward to working with
