Office 2008 vs. iWork vs. NeoOffice vs. OpenOffice
Last week, I posted a few thoughts on Apple Pages. As I noted there, one of my real goals in buying a Mac was to see if this platform really did make it easier to focus on teaching my classes, rather than on creating the electronic materials my students expect to support those classes.

Vista's Transparency Is Good News
eWEEK visits with Jim Allchin, head of Microsoft Windows development, to discuss strategy for the new operating system.
I will start by stating flatly that I like Jim Allchin, who runs Microsoft Windows development. A lot. When he retires at the end of the year, the company will have lost one of its all-time great technology leaders and a very decent guy.

Is Google going to make Microsoft look good?
Why do we like Google? Is it because they are the “do no evil” company? Is it because they are not Microsoft? Is it because they make our lives easier through their search, email, and other services? The fact of the matter is that a lot of people from users, to developers, to workers, and to investors like Google. Heck, even I like google! (Look at the ads.)

30.08.2005Sun will Support OpenOffice.org
Sun Microsystems on Monday plans to announce that it will provide support for the OpenOffice.org productivity software suite, citing a wave of
momentum behind the open-source project. The support, which starts at US$20 per user per year, will be offered to companies that distribute
OpenOffice.org, not directly to end-users, according to Mark Herring, senior director of marketing for StarOffice/OpenOffice.org and Network.com.
"For a lot of distributors, they wanted to distribute OpenOffice.org and had no option for back-line support," he said. OpenOffice.org and
StarOffice, Sun's accompanying commercial product, are compatible with Microsoft Office and identical in terms of capabilities, which include word
processing, spreadsheets and presentation software. But until now, Sun only supported StarOffice.

12.12.2006Hands on with the new online version of OpenOffice.org
After going
premium and suffering some community
fragmentation, the OpenOffice.org open source office suite is being taken in a new direction by a company named Ulteo. A
brainchild of Gael Duval, founder of Mandriva Linux, Ulteo's mission is to serve as a platform for putting applications onto the web. Using this
approach, Ulteo has released a public beta of Online OpenOffice.org, which quite literally puts OpenOffice.org inside a browser.
There are of course some real advantages to Ulteo's offering, not the least of which is overcoming platform-specific issues, but like any major
desktop software application that gets stuffed into a browser, Online OpenOffice.org has its drawbacks. Let's take a look at the pros and cons of the
latest productivity suite to go online.
