Clarity on Windows Vista
Milestones
In the ever-changing release
schedule for Windows Vista,
nothing stays constant. But
according to internal
Microsoft documentation, the
following dates are correct
for the next several major
milestones in the
product.
Currently, Microsoft plans
to ship the feature-complete
internal build on January 31,
2006, and then ship a
near-feature-complete
Community Technology Preview
(CTP) build to testers on
February 17. (To date, more
than 50 product teams have
submitted code for the
feature-complete builds.)
Windows Vista Beta 2 is due on
April 12, followed by a
release candidate (RC) build
in July and release to
manufacturing (RTM) in August.
Assuming this last date is
met, the general release of
the product will occur in
October.

Vista SP1 fails to spark migration
Microsoft's latest efforts to persuade customers to upgrade to its much-maligned Vista operating system have met with a cool response from users.
Historically, Microsoft's first service pack for one of its marquee products – such as Windows – provides the impetus for users to
upgrade. As Gartner analyst, Stephen Kleynhans recently noted, customers see SP1 as the sign that the OS has reached maturity and is ready for
enteprise deployment.
But even the offer of free support for using installing Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) and tools to lower implementation
cost, the user response has been one of stony indifference. Vista SP1 includes a number of fixes for bugs that have plagued the operating system, as
well as improved support for drivers. It initially became available to download from Microsoft's website and will be included as part of the
Window's Update feature from mid-April.

Steve Ballmer is misunderstood
Anand Iyer: In the wake of the Microsoft-Yahoo acquisition proposal, I've met quite a few disappointed Yahooligans. And they are not disappointed
that they'd be working at Microsoft, they are disappointed that they'd be working for Steve Ballmer. And it's not just the Yahooligans - I can't
tell you how many random people I've met who just simply hate Ballmer. And none of their experiences have been personal. I can see how Ballmer can
come across as a mean, shrewd and cocky person who likes to eat babies and kills people for sport, but I'm here to tell you that Ballmer is probably
the most intelligent, tactical and loyal person I've ever known. Clearly, this is going to be hard to digest especially considering I work at
Microsoft.

E.L. family to star online in ad campaign for Vista
For the Nelson family, computers are a way of life.
Particularly computers that run Microsoft Corp.'s new Vista operating
system. The family uses them for everything from watching movies and channel surfing to coordinating schedules and instant messaging.
Now, the Nelsons are about to be poster children for the Redmond, Wash.-based software giant. The company has just wrapped filming the family
using Vista as part of a new online advertising campaign.
"They
were looking for somebody who was using Vista in the way they want it to be used," said Mark Nelson, an information technology consultant.
"Microsoft hadn't seen a consumer do it before."

Vista turns one, and businesses start to come around... slowly
The secret weapons: SP1 and free and easy deployment tools
When Microsoft Corp. released Windows Vista to businesses
exactly one year ago, near-term expectations weren't high.
Experts widely predicted that Vista, even if
it was bug-free and proved to be an immediate hit with consumers, would only slowly catch on with corporations.
For instance,
Gartner Inc. forecast at the time that fewer than 5% of PCs worldwide would be running a business version of Vista by the end of this year.
One year on, it's unclear whether Microsoft has met even those pessimistic projections. In July, Redmond said enterprises had renewed 42 million Windows licenses that made them eligible for Vista. Trouble is, Microsoft also admitted
that the vast majority of those 42 million PCs were likely still on XP, though the company claims it has no accurate way of tracking this. Microsoft
has not provided a more up-to-date figure in the last
4 months.
