Are You Protected? - Design and Deploy Secure Web Apps with ASP.NET 2.0 and IIS 6.0

Web applications are among the most common computing services that are exposed to the Internet, and thus they pose an inviting target to anyone who wants to break into your network to steal sensitive information, tamper with your data, or otherwise compromise your system.

Ensuring the security of a Web application is a serious task, and requires consideration throughout the design, development, deployment, and operation phases. It should not be viewed as something that can be slapped onto an existing application, or achieved simply by applying existing platform security features.

Windows 7 From Idea to Feature: A view from Design

Steven Sinofsky: This post is jointly written by Samuel Moreau the manager of the user experience design team for the Windows Experience, Brad Weed, Director of User Experience Design and Research for Windows and Windows Live, and Julie Larson-Green, the VP of Program Management for the Windows Experience. With the number of comments that describe a specific feature idea, we thought it would be good to give you an overview of how we approach the overall design process and how ideas such as the ones you mention flow into our process. Also for those of you attending the PDC, Sam will be leading a session on the design principles of Windows 7.

Windows Vista UI design spoof video

Making spoof videos would definitely top the list of talents by Microsoft employees. Heres a dated but rare video starring the infamous (and now disbanded) MSX design team who worked on the Windows Codename Longhorn project.

This time they poke fun at the user experience decision making process for Longhorn, what would become Windows Vista. Starring from left to right, Tjeerd Hoek - design director for Windows, Greg Melander - visual design lead for Longhorn; Cees van Dok - lead product designer; Mark Ligameri - design manager & creative director for Longhorn; and Chris Guzak - senior architect for Windows.

Windows 7: Designing Aero Snap

Steven Sinofsky: Heres a behind the scenes look at the design of the Aero Snap feature in Windows 7. We thought it would be fun to take a look at the overall design process of the feature and the tools and techniques used. This feature poses a unique design challenge in that you just use the feature without any user-interface specifically to invoke it. As with all features this is a collaboration across all of our engineering disciplines. For this post, Stephan Hoefnagels, a Senior UX designer, presents the design perspective.

Manuel Clement - (XDR) Experience Design & Research

Long Zheng: If you have the slightest curiosity of what the next version of Windows will look like, then keep an eye on Manuel Clement. The trick is to use your peripheral vision and not stare, otherwise theyll sue for harassment.

He leads a relatively new design group at Microsoft Design called XDR, which stands for Experience Design and Research and is responsible for all the interaction design of future versions of Windows, Internet Explorer and Windows Live. Even though theyve just moved in, already theyve started redecorating Windows Live with the new glossy theme you see in Wave 2 products. One can only imagine what theyll do to Windows.

Microsoft battles to win over 'sceptical' designers

Microsoft is desperately trying to persuade more designers to use its Expression Web design tools and Silverlight, which is a potential Adobe Flash-killer.

Microsoft is far better known for its relationship with developers than with designers but as the software giant begins to step on Adobe's toes with its design tools, it has started hiring "user design evangelists" to help spread the word -- both to the design community as well as within its own campus.

One of the first designers to be recruited into this new role was Shane Morris, who joined Microsoft at the start of 2007.

Morris admits when he was first approached, he thought the recruiter had made a mistake...

Microsoft Design prototyping with PowerPoint

Long Zheng: What does Windows, Windows Live, Internet Explorer, Home Server and Expression Blend all have in common? Believe it or not, PowerPoint played a role in the design process. The productivity application where you and I might just make slideshows is also becoming a popular prototyping tool inside Microsoft.

At the śExpression around the clockť event in Seoul, Manuel Clement gave a talk about wireframe prototyping with Office PowerPoint 2007. Manuel is a lead of XDR (Experience, Design & Research) at Microsoft Design - the group responsible for design of Windows (7) and Windows Live. Simply put, XDR is taking over where MSX, the former Windows design team, left off. Thus, you bet Ill be watching them very closely.

How do Apple's designs affect consumers?

Apple has always been a company known for design; not just design, but even the most loathing Apple hater will have to admit at some time that the company does make some pretty well thought out products. Robert Brunner over at Fast Company has written an interesting blog post about Apple's design, and how other companies attempt to replicate it, sometimes producing a bad result for the end user. Brunner has said, "Here's the gist: Apple has been so successful in design, that to many people if something does not resemble an iPhone, iPod, MacBook, etc., it is not 'good design.' If it is not an uber-simple, highly-rationalized, single-buttoned, machined-from-a-solid-block-of aluminum thing, it can't be good, right?

Google testing new homepage design in Taiwan, Hong Kong

Google is testing a new homepage design in Taiwan and Hong Kong that takes advantage of faster broadband speeds in those markets, one of the company's founders said Thursday.

"We're actually now experimenting with trying new kinds of homepages, for example in Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong, that are a completely different type than we've tried before on our U.S. site as well as our European sites," Sergey Brin, a co-founder of Google and the company's president of technology, speaking to investors during a conference call.

Google announced the new design for its South Korean Web site in May, during a keynote speech by Chairman and CEO Eric Schmidt at the Seoul Digital Forum. The site's new design ditches Google's famously clean homepage design, adding a row of icons above the search bar and a row of animated icons below it. ..

Google goes for a new look on Korean site

Google is trying out a new look on its South Korean http://www.google.co.kr/ig?sp= korea&hl=ko>Web site that goes further from the company's famously clean design than anything tried before.

Google has been quietly tinkering with the design of its Web site for some time. Most recently, the company added a toolbar with text links at the top of its flagship site, just above the company's logo and search bar. The new site design introduced in South Korea replaces the toolbar with an array of logos -- including a row of animated icons that expand when the mouse rolls over them -- that add a dose of color, and clutter, to the site.

Eric Schmidt, the chairman and CEO of Google, announced the new look during a keynote speech Wednesday at the Seoul Digital Forum, saying Korean users were ready for the new design, which he described as more sophisticated. Schmidt didn't say whether the company planned to use the same design on other Google sites. ..

Microsoft: Malware can disable UAC in Windows 7 "by design"

A month has barely passed since the public beta debut of Windows 7 and we have our first horror story. UAC (user account control) was the major gripe with Windows Vista which annoyed most tech savvy users and confused ordinary consumers. Microsoft has changed the behavior in Windows 7, lowering the requirement for user interaction when changing system settings. The apparent downside to this is, according to reports, the way Microsoft has changed the behavior makes it extremely easy for malware authors to write code to disable UAC without user intervention.

Windows 7 Anytime Upgrade retail boxing revealed

AeroXperience's Bryant Zadegan has got his hands on an exclusive look at the Windows 7 Anytime Upgrade retail boxing. Those who are familiar with the Windows Vista Anytime Upgrade will remember that it was only pushed online, but Zadegan says that "Microsoft will indeed be pushing Anytime Upgrade through retail channels." On Tuesday, Microsoft unveiled the final design for the regular retail box. The anytime upgrade boxes are the same shape and design as the full version or regular upgrade boxes, except slightly smaller since they just contain a product key used to migrate Windows 7 from Home Premium to Professional or Ultimate from within the Windows 7 control panel. Via Releases Laptop Design as Open Source

Via Technologies released the hardware design for a low-cost laptop with WiMax support under an open-source license on Tuesday, a move intended to make customization easier and shorten design cycles for system makers. The CAD (computer-assisted design) files for the OpenBook reference design can be downloaded for free and made available to anyone under the Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike 3.0 license. The terms of this license allow the CAD files to be freely copied, shared and modified.

The only requirements are that use of the design is attributed to Via and changes made to the design can only be distributed under the same license or one that has similar terms. "We're hoping we'll get some interesting feedback, and look forward to seeing what the community thinks about this concept," said Richard Brown, vice president of marketing at Via.
