Offline Files in Vista

One of the key things that we focused on for Windows Vista was improving the experience for mobile (laptop) users. If you are like me, you spend quite a bit of time running around with a laptop. However, when I am in my office, I tend to use my desktop. The primary way that I share files between my desktop and my laptop is by storing them on a Windows Server (it's also the primary way that I make sure that my files get backed up).

Windows Vista: Offline Files

Here's one I can relate to, Jim talks about the improved Offline files feature in Vista, something I use myself and am very happy with.

For example, at Microsoft we redirect the "Documents" folder (previously known as "My Documents" in Windows XP) to a share on the server (of course, we use access controls on the folders to make sure that I am the only person who can see my files).

By redirecting key folders like the Documents folder to a file share, my documents are available to me no matter which one of my Windows PCs I am using. The problem of course is what happens when I don't have access to the server -- such as when I am not on the corporate network or perhaps sitting on an airplane. Frankly, the same problem exists with any file share that I might try to access when I am not on the corporate network.

Gmail Goes Offline with Google Gears

Today Gmail Labs released a new feature that bridges the gap between desktop and web-based applications like never before: Offline Gmail. You can now access your Gmail from your browser any time, whether or not you're online.

Offline Gmail uses Google Gears to download all of your email to your desktop (every last gigabyte). Using Gmail in offline mode is exactly the same as using it normallyexcept that when offline mode is enabled in your browser, Gmail is that much faster.

Microsoft Pro Photo Tools v1 Now Available

The Pro Photo Tools allow you to add, change, and delete common metadata properties for digital photographs. You can place photos on the Live Earth map and then drag them to the right location.

The GPS information will be stored back into the photos. If you have a GPS device, can load track route files from the most popular formats (NMEA, GPX, and KML) and see them on the map. Then you can place your photos on the track route. Again, the GPS info will be stored into your file. When you have the right GPS location for your photos, you can automatically generate location info like country, state, city and even street names. Or if you know the location where a picture was taken, you can type it in and get the GPS location information automatically.

SyncToy v2.0 Beta Available

SyncToy 2.0 Beta for Windows is available as a free download from the Microsoft Download Center. The easy to use, customizable application helps you copy, move, rename, and delete files between folders and computers.

There are files from all kinds of sources that we want to store and manage. Files are created by our digital cameras, e-mail, cell phones, portable media players, camcorders, PDAs, and laptops. Increasingly, computer users are using different folders, drives, and even different computers (such as a laptop and a desktop) to store, manage, retrieve and view files. Yet managing hundreds or thousands of files is still largely a manual operation. In some cases it is necessary to regularly get copies of files from another location to add to primary location; in other cases there is a need to keep two storage locations exactly in sync. Some users manage files manually, dragging and dropping from one place to another and keeping track of whether the locations are synchronized in their heads. Other users may use two or more applications to provide this functionality.

Google Docs getting offline access

Google Docs' word processor is finally getting offline access. Using the free Google Gears extension, users will soon be able to read and edit their files even when they have no Internet connection.

The Gears-enabled version of Google Docs will roll out to users over the next few weeks, starting Monday. If you don't have access to the feature, just keep trying, Google Docs product manager Ken Norton told me. You'll know you have the feature when you see a little "offline" menu item in the upper right of your document window in Google Docs.

Offline access for Google's spreadsheet and presentation app will follow after the word processor rollout is complete, Norton said, and will be read-only to start.

Zoho Writer Gets Offline Editing

Zoho Writer made its tools available offline through Google Gears a few months back, but the offline capabilities were limited to read-only functions. Now both view and edit options are available for Zoho Offline, through Google Gears. So youll need to first download Google Gears if you dont already have it. From there, youll be able to access your documents offline.

Theres a new option in your Zoho Writer toolbar that lets you choose śofflineť mode. Once clicked, Zoho will download the 15 documents based on your left-hand document order for you to work with offline. If you need more, you can select to have up to 25 documents downloaded for offline use. This may be suitable for most users, but for those that use Zoho Writer in a more extensive manner, this may not be enough access for offline use. I frequently search through previous documents for fact-checking and other reasons, and would need access to more than 25 documents. But with some creative finagling, most users should be able to work around these limitations.

Whitehouse email offline

Late yesterday it was reported that the email system for the White House was offline and there was no estimated time until it would be back up. "Press Secretary Robert Gibbs announced the technical snafu at his 1:30 p.m. briefing, apologizing to the media for the e-mail silence this afternoon." It appears that it was a server overload as the new administration was migrating their transition email over to the official White House email servers. The outage affects both incoming and outgoing emails. The server being knocked offline is probably not a coincidence after the Obama staff complained that the technology was archaic.

Firefox users gain location tool

Mozilla, the company behind the Firefox browser, has released technology that helps websites detect the physical location of computers.

The system will allow users, for instance, to find local restaurants when they travel to a new town.

The Geode project is an experimental add-on ahead of a full blown launch of geolocation technology in version 3.1 of Firefox.

Users will have control over how much location information they give.

It uses technology from a firm called Skyhook which works out a computer's location from nearby wireless networks.

Its so-called Loki system can determine location within seconds with an accuracy of about 10 to 20 metres.

Snow Leopard will know your location, via the Internet

AppleInsider is reporting that the recent build of Snow Leopard, 10A261, commonly known as Beta 3, will use triangulation features via the Internet to pinpoint your location. Not only this, but Apple has helped developers out by including a new multi-touch framework, allowing people creating programs for Mac OS X to make better use of the recently released aluminium MacBooks and MacBook Pros. The new location framework, dubbed CoreLocation, and will use the same system the original iPhone and iPod touch uses to find the users' location, as, of course, many computers don't have a GPS to make it easier.

Offline Virtual Machine Servicing Tool 2.0

The Offline Virtual Machine Servicing Tool 2.0 helps organizations maintain virtual machines that are stored offline in a Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager library. While stored, virtual machines do not receive operating system updates. The tool provides a way to keep offline virtual machines up-to-date so that bringing a virtual machine online does not introduce vulnerabilities into the organizations IT infrastructure.

The Offline Virtual Machine Servicing Tool combines the Windows Workflow programming model with the Windows PowerShell™ interface to bring groups of virtual machines online just long enough for them to receive updates from either System Center Configuration Manager 2007 or Windows Server Update Services. As soon as the virtual machines are up-to-date, the tool returns them to the offline state in the Virtual Machine Manager library.

Google Latitude released, share your location on the go

Google has announced that on Wednesday it will expand its current service on Google Maps to track individual user's locations. The feature will allow SmartPhone users to share their locations with others to track user's last location, and help locate each other. With such a feature, privacy concerns are at risk of helping predators or unwanted people finding out a users location. To combat such issues, Google has implemented a feature where users need to manually turn the tracking feature on, while making it easy to limit access, or disable the service. Google promises not to retain any user's movements, but the store the last location by the user on Google's computers.

Google's Gears gives laptops location smarts

Google has updated its open-source Gears project so Web sites can take advantage of location services in Gears-enabled Web browsers.

The underlying technology, which used signals from cell phone towers, was initially developed so mobile-phone users could get a rough fix on their location, even without GPS technology. Now, though, Gears has been augmented with location smarts based on signals from Wi-Fi networks so that people with laptops also can figure out their location to within about 200 meters in many major cities.
