During the Beta phase of Office 2003, Code-named ?Office 11? and referred to as NGO (Next Generation of Office), brought new applications to the table. These applications were InfoPath and OneNote.

Office 2007: Users Wary of Changes

While Microsoft faces a host of challenges in maintaining its market share numbers and persuading customers to upgrade to its 2007 Office System suite of products when released in the second half of this year, its competitors face an equally daunting task of winning users away from Office 2007 and growing their numbers.

Heading the list of challenges facing Microsoft is the fact that Office 2007 has a new user interface, which could require extensive staff retraining at a significant cost, as well as a new file format, which has the potential to create compatibility issues, analysts such as Joe Wilcox of Jupiter Research, told eWEEK.

Microsoft is currently developing the successor to Office 2007, Office codenamed "14". Eagled eyed Microsoft enthusiast and blogger Stephen Chapman has spotted what appears to be an internal software roadmap from Microsoft. The roadmap reveals a milestone of year end 2009 but the dates aren't very clear: In the roadmap you can see that Office 14 is clearly identified as Microsoft Office System 2009.

But one member of the Office family, Exchange 12, already is on its way to becoming a 2007 deliverable. Will Office 12 slip into 2007? We'll keep you posted.

Do Microsoft users want cheap Office or Web-based Office?

Mary Jo Foley: Would some of the folks clamoring for Microsoft to release a completely Web-based version of its Office suite be just as happy if Microsoft released a stripped-down Office that was really cheap, or maybe even free and advertising-supported?

I dont want or need to log into Office from some other computer somewhere else. I seldom need or want to collaborate with others on documents. I believe I am not alone.
