Heading the list of challenges facing Microsoft is the fact that Office 2007 has a new user interface, which could require extensive staff retraining at a significant cost, as well as a new file format, which has the potential to create compatibility issues, analysts such as Joe Wilcox of Jupiter Research, told eWEEK.

02.04.2009Announcing Service Pack 2 (SP2) for the 2007 Microsoft Office System
Office Service Pack Team: Were pleased to announce that Service Pack 2 (SP2) for the 2007 Microsoft Office system is expected to be released in the
near future. Although we arent yet announcing the exact release date, it will fall between February and April of 2009.
Historically, we have waited to communicate details about service packs until their release (or very shortly before). As we communicated with SP3
for Office 2003 and SP1 for the 2007 Office System, we will be taking steps to increase transparency and visibility into the Office servicing model at
the request of our customers. To that end, we would like to start sharing some details into what will be included in SP2 for the 2007 Office system.
This is by no means an exhaustive list of everything included in this service pack and we will share more details prior to the final release, but we
want to start communicating to customers what they should be aware of at a high level.

13.11.2006Microsoft to drop support for Office 2003 SP2
Microsoft Corp. warned users yesterday that it will drop support for Office 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2) in three weeks, and urged them to upgrade to a
newer service pack that was involved in a dustup earlier this year over blocked file formats.
The company's policy is to support
an Office service pack for 12 months after it releases a successor; Microsoft rolled out Office 2003 SP3 in September 2007. It always extends that
12-month period to the following month's second Tuesday, the usual patch day for its security updates.

Microsoft is currently developing the successor to Office 2007, Office codenamed "14". There has been little to no information on the upcoming

07.01.2009Microsoft Releases Office 2007 Service Pack 2
Microsoft has, at last, released their second service pack for their latest Office suite, Office 2007. This update comes almost a year after the
first service pack, but includes many important features and updates that make it worth the wait.
In general, Microsoft describes Office
2007 SP2 as:
- All of the Public Updates, Security Updates, Cumulative Updates, and Hotfixes released through February 2009.
- Previously
unreleased fixes that were made specifically for this service pack. (In addition to general product fixes, this includes improvements in stability,
performance, and security.)
However, unlike the folks at Apple, Microsoft provides a more detailed list of changes that were made in SP2.
Due to the extreme amount of changes that were made, they can not fit inside one article, so head over to this KB article on Microsoft's site to
read the complete list.

26.08.2009FSX-SP2(DX10) delay factors
Phil Taylor: This has come up multiple times, including in the comments of the SP2 post, so I want to cover why there is a time delay from when
Acceleration will be available and until the download for SP2 will be available.
Yes, there is a reason for the delay, even if
bits for SP2 are done.
Just because Acceleration English RTM'ed and the bits are frozen does not mean they are ready to release.
Since Acceleration and SP2 are separate products; that means completely separate efforts are required for setup, test, and international release
efforts.

11.10.2007More detail about Office 2007 SP1
Darren Strange: Responding to
com
ments from yesterday and providing additional clarification.
Windows update service schedule.
Microsoft Update and ˜
Check for updates on the
Office download tab page both use the same
detection logic. This however is a PULL mechanisms where the client initiates the process by visiting the webpage.
Automatic Updates uses the same detection logic, also called by a client process and if configured to do so will Automatically
pull the updates down and also install them for the client .
So whilst the advice is that users and customers
should allow automatic updates, we want to give customers fair warning before Office sp1 patches are auto installed. This hopefully explains why
sp1 is available on update now but that we won't be adding it to auto updates for a few months.

12.12.2007Microsoft sends Vista SP2 invites - beta release in 4 weeks
Thanks to a tipster we have learned Microsoft has started sending Vista SP2 and Windows Server 2008 SP2 invites to select testers today.

placeholder online for the upcoming betas of Windows
Vista SP2 and Windows Server 2008 SP2.
Microsoft will include Windows Search 4 in Vista SP2 along with Bluetooth wireless support
(including latest BT 2.1 fixes), support for the new VIA 64-bit CPU and additional application compatibility updates.
For Windows Server
2008 SP2, Microsoft will include Backwards compatibility with Terminal Services licensing keys, improved manageability features with DFS/FRS console,
and Storage Resource Manager, print server and spooler performance improvements for printers in Windows Vista and Server 2008 and improved error
reporting in DFSR to help identify incorrectly configured deployments which lead to failed replication.
Both builds are "anticipated" to
