Office 2007 SP1 Installation/Slipstream Guide

Some of you may be wondering how to do a clean install of Office 2007 using an Office 2007 RTM image along with SP1 at the same time. As you may know, Office 2007 makes use of the Updates folder in the installation media to install any new updates that it finds in the folder however updates have to be in the .msp file format for them to be recognized. Since the Office 2007 SP1 update file is delivered in the .exe format, an extra step is required before being able to proceed:



First, you should copy the contents of the Office 2007 RTM image to a temporary folder. For our example we're using C:O2007Temp. We have also copied the Office 2007 SP1 Update file (office2007sp1-kb936982-fullfile-en-us.exe) to the D: drive.



Then, using the Run command in Windows XP/Vista (WinKey+R), run the following command:

D:office2007sp1-kb936982-fullfile-en-us.exe /extract:C:O2007TempUpdates

replacing D: with wherever you stored the Office 2007 SP1 update file and C:O2007Temp with wherever you stored the Office 2007 RTM files. After agreeing to the Microsoft Software License Terms, SP1 will be extracted to C:O2007TempUpdates.



That's it! Just start the setup for Office 2007 and the updates for SP1 will then be picked up and installed during the setup. The same method applies to any other Office 2007 SP1 update.

Microsoft is touting Office 2007, in tandem with upcoming products such as Windows Vista and Exchange Server 2007, as the linchpin of a new round in corporate spending.

"We've crossed the development finish line, and the team deserves to celebrate," says Microsoft president Jeff Raikes , who oversees the company's Business Division. "The 2007 Microsoft Office system RTM completes the most significant improvements to the products in more than a decade. It's rewarding to be able to send this release off to our customers and help them take the next big leap forward in productivity."

Microsoft had previously announced its Office Technology Guarantee program, which allows customers who purchase new PC with Office 2003 preloaded between October 26, 2006 and March 15, 2007 to receive free or inexpensive upgrades to similar Office 2007 product versions. Details about these so-called cross-grades are available through PC makers.

Windows Vista will RTM at build 6.0.6000

A source close to Microsoft has confirmed to me that Windows Vista will in fact carry the build number 6.0.6000 . He found this out by receiving a mail with the build stamp "Microsoft Windows Mail 6.0.6000.16384" so that ends that speculation.

Also the MSDN subscription page has been updated with the following information

Windows Vista and Office 2007 will be available through MSDN Subscriber downloads within 7 days of release to manufacture (RTM). MSDN Subscriptions is committed to making new content available to our subscribers as soon as is practical.

Looks like we'll be seeing this appear soon.

Update: Several key Microsoft employees has firmly stated that Vista has not been released to manufacturing. The day might be soon, but is certainly not today, or tomorrow. There's still a bit more work to do. Build 6000.16384 is real, but it also doesn't mean RTM. These days, Microsoft doesn't have to increase the major version number when building, so theoretically, any sub-set of build 6000 (6000.16385, 16386, etc...) can be RTM. source

We have some big news regarding the Windows 7 RTM. According to Wzor, the final sign off is set for July 13th. According to a translation, this is the final roadmap for Windows 7: FINAL ROADMAP FOR WINDOWS 7 : 6/1 - 6/19 BUILDING RTM ESCROW - already assembled RTM ESCROW. 6/22 - 7/10 RTM RECALL - assembly and search for candidates to the final RTM release. 7/10 WINDOWS 7 RTM FINAL BUILD TARGET - build day "gold code". 7/13 WINDOWS 7 RTM SIGN-OFF - the date of signing the final RTM release! We previously reported that Windows 7 could RTM at the end of this month, but it looks like we now have a final RTM date.

Microsoft admitted today that Microsoft Office 2007 would slip from its planned October RTM date, without mentioning a new date or hints to what it could be. By the same time, its release date would have slipped from January 2007 to a more general "Early 2007".

Here's a declaration a Microsoft employee made on the subject:

"Based on internal testing and beta 2 feedback around product performance, we are revising our development schedule to deliver the 2007 Microsoft Office system by the end of year 2006, with broad general availability in early 2007," a Microsoft spokesperson told BetaNews. "Feedback on quality and performance will ultimately determine the exact dates."

Office 12 Christened Office 2007

Microsoft is now referring to the next version of its desktop office suite, code-named "Office 12," as "Office 2007." Microsoft watcher Steven Bink is reporting that Microsoft officials used the Office 2007 name at IT Forum.

He also points to an Office Online page that uses the same terminology. Microsoft officials have held fast to the company line that Office 12 will ship towards the end of calendar 2006. Brandon LeBlanc: I recognize this is an important question to have answered. Many of you have said you want to know exactly when you will be able to get your hands on RTM. Last Monday, I gave an update on RTM to close out some myths. In that update, I also gave a broad timeline on when different groups of people “ or œaudiences� “ would get the final RTM code.



While I have nothing new to add regarding RTM today, I do however have more precise information to give on when you will be able to get RTM. Again, when you can get RTM depends on who you are.
