Office 2007: Users Wary of Changes

While Microsoft faces a host of challenges in maintaining its market share numbers and persuading customers to upgrade to its 2007 Office System suite of products when released in the second half of this year, its competitors face an equally daunting task of winning users away from Office 2007 and growing their numbers.

Heading the list of challenges facing Microsoft is the fact that Office 2007 has a new user interface, which could require extensive staff retraining at a significant cost, as well as a new file format, which has the potential to create compatibility issues, analysts such as Joe Wilcox of Jupiter Research, told eWEEK.

Office 2007 Is Running Late, Too

Just like Windows Vista, Office 2007 is now officially a 2007 product . Sure, Microsoft is still going to release to manufacturing (RTM) the Office 2007 bits in calendar 2006 (although a bit later than it expected). But only volume licensees will actually be able to get the Office 2007 bits in 2006; everyone else will have to wait until January 2007. Sounds like Microsoft is now planning a double-header product launch to start the new year. The news of Office 2007 new rollout schedule comes the same day that Microsoft appointed Office chief Steven Sinofsky to move to Windows to get the trains running on time.

Microsoft: Free tool for planning Office 2007 Conversions

On Friday, Brian Jones, an Office program manager at Microsoft, quietly announced the release of Office Migration Planning Manager, a free tool kit designed to help corporate users convert their existing Office files to Office 2007's new Open XML file format. The new technology reports how many and what kind of Office files exist on networked PCs. To use the 2.7MB tool, users will need either Access 2007 or a free, but as-yet-unreleased runtime version of the Access software.

Microsoft previously had released its Office Compatibility Pack, which can help IT administrators update files saved in Office XP or Office 2003 formats to Open XML. The compatibility pack includes a tool called the Office File Converter, which can be used to convert large numbers of files at the same time. Earlier versions of Office all save data in binary file formats but Open XML takes individual files, some of them in conventional binary formats, and repackages them in a compressed form.

Microsoft Rehauls BI Product Line, Drops ProClarity Name

Microsoft is releasing Office PerformancePoint Server 2007 on Wednesday, which marks the end of the ProClarity brand with the absorption of those acquired technologies into the new offering.

Microsoft Office PerformancePoint Server is a combination of the company's in-house developed products, including Business Scorecard Manager 2005 (which also loses its former title as part of the rebranding) and Excel, plus ProClarity's advanced visualization and analysis technologies, and new offerings from Microsoft for planning, budgeting, and forecasting. Microsoft acquired ProClarity in June 2006.

The offering represents a newly cohesive strategy to Microsoft's previously scattered approach to business intelligence. The most obvious improvement for users, says Microsoft, is that the products in the suite will be able to exchange information without having to take extra steps, such as exporting data from one app to the next. For example, those using Excel for planning can access planning data in a spreadsheet directly from the scorecard app. ..

Office 2008 Coming January 2008

We announced today that Office 2008 for Mac will be released to manufacturing (RTM) this December, which will allow for retail availability in the US in mid-January (planning for Macworld), and allow us to deliver Office 2008 to our volume license customers and global customers in the first quarter of 2008.

We had hoped to deliver the product in the second half of 2007 and as you know might imagine, this was a tough slip for us. Moving RTM to December means you, our customers, won't have our product this year, and I am very clear a lot of folks are eagerly awaiting Office 2008. Slipping delays when our team can move on to our next release of Office for Mac - we're working to get releases out on a more frequent basis, delivering more good stuff to Microsoft Mac customers more often.
