Office 2007: Users Wary of Changes
While Microsoft faces a host of challenges in maintaining its market share numbers and persuading customers to upgrade to its 2007 Office System suite of products when released in the second half of this year, its competitors face an equally daunting task of winning users away from Office 2007 and growing their numbers.
Heading the list of challenges facing Microsoft is the fact that Office 2007 has a new user interface, which could require extensive staff retraining at a significant cost, as well as a new file format, which has the potential to create compatibility issues, analysts such as Joe Wilcox of Jupiter Research, told eWEEK.

01.10.2007Will free office suites supplant Microsoft as the industry leader?
Quite a bit of talk has arisen today over two of Microsoft's competitors (Google and IBM) offering free office suites in an attempt to supplant
Microsoft as the office king. And now that this is happened, some are wondering if Microsoft will finally face reality and offer its own Office
product for free so it can compete.
The possibility of having Word, Excel, Powerpoint and the rest for free sure sounds awfully
nice, but if you think Microsoft would give it up for free, you're dreaming.
As NPD announced just last week, Office 2007 is
performing extremely well. According to the research firm, Office 2007 on Windows is selling at roughly double the rate of Office 2003. Will two free
solutions alter the unprecedented sales figures Microsoft is currently enjoying? Not a chance.
As someone who has used both
Google's Office Suite and another free product, OpenOffice, I can say that neither of those programs can possibly stack up to Windows Office. Believe
me, I wish I could say that both do, but the sad truth is they don't.

25.05.2006How to minimize the pain of an Office 2007 upgrade
Moving to a new office is
never fun. The same goes for moving to a
major new release of Microsoft Office -- which Office 2007 happens to be.
There is new, heftier software to be installed,
employees to be
retrained
for Office 2007's new 'Ribbon' interface, documents that need to be migrated to 2007's new XML-based file format, and more.
Office 2007 is the ninth version released by Microsoft in the last decade and a half. Many companies have developed expertise on how to plan and
perform this migration. And Microsoft offers
tools, some of them free, to help.
Still, many companies find themselves beleaguered with the scope of the
task, and seek outside help.

27.03.2007Microsoft offers free software to Louisiana SMBs
Microsoft is working with state officials in Louisiana to offer Windows and Office software free for a year to small businesses still feeling the
effects of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
Microsoft on Monday unveiled a new program, called the Software License Relief Program,
in conjunction with the 2007 Hope & Recovery Summit, which is commemorating the second anniversary of both storms. Microsoft is working with the
Louisiana Small Business Development Center (LSBDC) to offer the program, which will launch next month and gives eligible small businesses access to
software from Microsoft, including Windows and Office, free of charge for a year.
The program doesn't come without a catch,
however -- there are eligibility requirements for businesses, one of which is to purchase a three-year Microsoft Open Value License that spreads out
software license payments over three years. Open Value bundles core software offerings from Microsoft into one license. After purchasing the software,
businesses can bring the first year's invoice to any LSBDC, and Microsoft will pay the bill. The businesses themselves are responsible for the last
two years of the license.
