A new system in Windows XP, intended to curb software piracy, requires every Windows XP user to call Microsoft (or connect via the web) to obtain a long product activation key for each installation. As though the 25-character CD key on the back of the CD package in previous versions of Windows wasn't enough, now users are expected to make a phone call to ask Microsoft's permission to use Windows XP.

Office 2007 'Stun Switch' Nothing New
There doesn't seem to be as much confusion over what this thing does as over what to call it: With a name that sounds straight out of "1984," what exactly is Reduced Functionality Mode (RFM) in Office 2007?
microsoft -
comments -
21.11.2006Office 2007 Also Has Kill Switch
Apparently Microsoft is
putting the same kind of
'kill switch' into Office
2007 that is reportedly being
used by Vista. The kill switch
limits the program's
functionality once activation
has been bypassed a certain
number of times.
But now Microsoft's
intentions are clear: Just as
it is doing with Vista,
Microsoft plans to incorporate
what basically amounts to a
'kill switch' into Office
2007. Office 2007 users who
can't or won't pass
activation muster within a set
time period will be moved into
"reduced-functionality
mode", according to
Microsoft's Knowledge Base
article.

21.11.2006Pirated Vista may be useless, Microsoft says
Microsoft said supposedly
pirated copies of its new
Vista computer operating
system "will be of limited
value" to those who use them.
Microsoft responded Tuesday to
reports that some Web sites
have been circulating pirated
copies of Vista and the Office
2007 applications suite.
The pirated Vista
comes with a product key that
users can enter to activate a
version of the products on
their computers without paying
for them, according to a
report on the Web site of The
Sydney (Australia) Morning
Herald newspaper. A product
key is a unique serial number
tied to each package of a
software product.
A second download, called an
"activation crack," can then
be applied that bypasses the
activation process intended to
guarantee that the Vista OS
being downloaded is
legitimate, the Herald
reported. Pirated copies of
Office 2007 can be downloaded
just with the product key with
no second activation code
required. But Microsoft said
in a prepared statement that
those pirated copies of the OS
won't work for long.

16.11.2006Microsoft cites human error in anti-piracy malfunction
Last week's malfunction of Microsoft's Windows Genuine Advantage anti-piracy mechanism was caused when new software code was accidentally put on the
servers running the system, before those servers had been made ready for the code, according to
a post last night by Alex Kochis, WGA senior product
manager. Kochis writes:
"Nothing more than human error started it all. Pre-production code was sent to production servers. The production servers
had not yet been upgraded with a recent change to enable stronger encryption/decryption of product keys during the activation and validation
processes. The result of this is that the production servers declined activation and validation requests that should have passed."
Kochis
explains in the post that the problem made some computers fail the anti-piracy validation and activation processes, causing them to lose advanced
Windows features and get a "This copy of Windows is not genuine" message, until the WGA system was fixed and people were able to properly activate
and validate their computers.

07.05.2009Product Activation Changes and Impacts on Windows Server 2008
Today the Windows group announced some changes in their increased efforts against piracy and new steps being taken to protect Windows Vista (see
here for details). These changes are coming in
Windows Vista SP1 (due out in Q1 2008). Along with disabling some of the known exploits that counterfeiters are using, changes are being made to
product activation. Specifically, the Reduced Functionality Mode (RFM) is being replaced with new notifications to let customers know that their
systems are not genuine when they do not activate or when their systems fail validation.
So what does this mean for Windows
Server 2008?

07.11.2007Office 2007 Is Running Late,

Just like Windows Vista,
Office 2007 is now
officially a 2007
product . Sure,
Microsoft is still going to
release to manufacturing (RTM)
the Office 2007 bits in

only volume licensees will

Microsoft appointed Office
chief Steven Sinofsky to move

24.03.2006Official Way to Use Vista without Activation 120 Days
Official Way to Install and
Use Windows Vista without
Activation for Free for 120
Days
By default,
Windows Vista can be
installed, used and run
without any license, product
key or the need of activation
for 30 days grace period, for
purpose of trial or
evaluation. Although Microsoft
initially stressed that users
should purchase a license with
valid product key before the
trial period expires, or else
Windows Vista will lock into
Reduced Functionality Mode.
However, a "rearm" method
has long since been discovered
to be able to extend, or reset
the remaining time for
activation to another fresh 30
days, for up to 3 times.
Now Microsoft has
confirmed that Windows Vista
can be used and run for 120
days or 4 months ( 3
rearms ), and extending the
activation grace period is not
a violation of the Vista End
User License Agreement (EULA).
All versions of Vista include
Windows Vista Ultimate allow a
30-day free period without
activation, except the
corporate-oriented Vista
Enterprise, which supports
only a three-day trial.

13.11.2006Microsoft Kills Windows Validation and Office Validation Anti-Piracy Efforts
Microsoft's anti-piracy
efforts will undertake a major
overhauling. The Redmond
company plans to take down
both the Windows Validation
Assistant and the Office
Validation Assistant.
However, Microsoft is
going to fill in the empty
spaces left by the
discontinuing of WVA and OVA
with Windows Comparison Guide
(WCG) and the Office
Comparison Guide (OCG).
Additionally there is also the
old trust Windows Genuine
Advantage and Office Genuine
Advantage that will survive
the anti-piracy cancelled
services. Still, this is not
the end of the upgrades in
stored for the Microsoft
anti-piracy programs. Feature
updates and additions are also
planned to be introduced.
"We're finally
taking down both the Windows
Validation Assistant and the
Office Validation Assistant.
The WVA was a prototype for
WGA; it was the first tool
launched that offered a
web-based validation that
could help find evidence that
a copy wasn't genuine that
otherwise might be hard for
the average person to find
(such as bad or leaked product
keys, etc.) The good news is
that we're replacing the WVA
with the Windows Comparison
Guide (WCG) and the Office
Comparison Guide (OCG). These
guides offer much of the same
functionality as the WVA did
by walking users through a
quiz that helps them match the
anti-piracy features of the
products they have, but
without the web-based
validation. For that we're
pointing people directly to
WGA,"
revealed
Alex
Kochis, a senior licensing
manager on the WGA team. ..

12.04.2007Vista Anti-Piracy Will Drive People to Linux?
Oh, the wicked 2007
predictions people make, just
because it's the end of the
year. The good folks over at
IDC released their "Top 10
Predictions for Worldwide
System Infrastructure
Software, 2007." Overall,
it's a good list, although I
don't buy No. 9. IDC
predicts: "Microsoft's
client operating system
anti-piracy efforts will
backfire. Microsoft's
anti-piracy campaign will
drive customers toward
Linux."
Bwhahahaha. Somebody has
been tipping too much holiday
eggnog. The anti-piracy
campaign is biggest on the
desktop--so, what? IDC
suggests that Linux is finally
going to gain desktop traction
because of Windows product
activation? Oh the tears, I'm
laughing so hard.
More likely, new anti-piracy
mechanisms will drive
customers to Windows XP. More
onerous piracy checks apply to
Vista than its predecessor.
Microsoft's nightmare
situation is that customers
stick with Windows XP and
consume more Web-based
products or services as means
of extending operating system
capabilities without
upgrading.

Microsoft has released an update for Windows Vista designed to detect activation exploits that bypass product activation and that interfere with usual

According to Microsoft "when the update is installed, no functionality of your

Web site that describes how you can remove the exploits. When the exploits are removed, you may be asked to use a valid product key to activate your
