Cray Computer Founder Joins Microsoft
Microsoft confirmed on Friday that Burton Smith, formerly the chief scientist for Cray, would be joining the company as a technical fellow. Smith will work to expand Microsoft's efforts in parallel and high-performance computing, and would report to chief technical officier Craig Mundie.
Smith had worked with Cray since its inception as Tera Computer Co. in 1988. He has also published several works on issues regarding parallel computing. "As microprocessor technology continues to evolve over the next decade or so, we're going to see the capabilities of a supercomputer cluster on the desktop which will require a different software architecture," Mundie said. "Burton will be investigating how to develop software to benefit from the opportunities which multi-core multiprocessors will present."

03.01.2008AMD Eyes Intel Antitrust Case
Advanced Micro Devices Inc.
said Friday that the European
Commission's antitrust
lawsuit against rival chip
maker Intel Corp. is more
clear-cut than the
regulator's ongoing pursuit
of Microsoft Corp.
And although it took
longer for the Intel probe to
result in formal charges --
seven years, as opposed to
three in the Microsoft case --
the Intel case could move
ahead much faster, said AMD
spokesman, Jens Drews.
"They are two
very different cases: one
involves
intellectual property and the
other is a
straightforward abuse of a
dominant position," Drews
said.
In
formal charges sent to Intel
Thursday, the European
Commission accused the
world's biggest maker of
computer chips of handing out
"substantial rebates" to
computer manufacturers if they

Acer aces out Lenovo as world's third-largest PC maker
Of the 62 million PCs shipped
in the first quarter of 2007,
the biggest story is a company
that shipped a little over 4
million units. Taiwan-based
Acer has taken hold of 6.8
percent of the global PC
market, good enough for third
place, according to market
research firm iSuppli.
After taking the No. 3
slot in worldwide notebook
sales from Toshiba in the
fourth quarter of 2006, Acer
has taken even more ground,
this time from Lenovo. The
Chinese computer maker is now
0.4 percent points behind Acer
in worldwide computer market
share.
Acer also
turned in the best growth
performance of all the top
five PC suppliers, according
to the iSuppli report. Its
shipments grew 45.8 percent to
4.2 million units, up from 2.9
million in the same quarter a
year ago. ..

Lenovo recalls 100,000 laptop batteries
The world's number 3 computer
maker is taking a serious hit,
as this is the company's
second battery recall in the
past six months. In September,
IBM Corporation and Lenovo
said they were seeking the
recall of 526,000
rechargeable, lithium-ion Sony
batteries purchased with
ThinkPad computers after one
of them caught fire at Los
Angeles International Airport.
Lenovo bought IBM's personal
computer division in May 2005.
Lenovo Incorporated recalled
about 100,000 laptop computer
batteries Thursday, warning
that they could overheat and
cause a fire. The latest
recall involves batteries made
by Japan's Sanyo and follows
four reports of overheating.
The recalled nine-cell
batteries have the part number
FRU P/N 92P1131 and sell for
about $180. The Chinese PC
maker, which has its world
headquarters in Research
Triangle Park, said consumers
should stop using the recalled
products immediately. The
batteries can overheat if the
laptop is dropped a certain
way, striking the battery on a
corner edge.
" Sanyo is going to
financially support the
recall. From a competitive
perspective, we expect this
recall to have only minimal,
if any, impact ," said
Lenovo spokesman Ray Gorman.
Benjamin Gray, a business
computer analyst with
Forrester Research Inc., said
Lenovo maintains a solid
reputation in the U.S. and
Europe and should fare well
despite the recall: " Yeah,
this is certainly a difficult
thing to deal with as a user
and a customer but it's not
something that will cause
customers to move away from
Lenovo, absolutely
not ."

Psystar wins legal round against Apple
In an interesting twist, Computer World is reporting that a federal judge ruled last week that the Mac clone maker Psystar can continue its
countersuit against computer maker and Mac OS developer Apple Corporation. Psystar is (in)famous for legally battling Apple for the last seven
months, calling them out for breaking antitrust laws, and the Judge hinted that if Psystar can prove its allegations, other manufacturers may be able
to sell computers with Mac OS X pre-installed. This is bad news for Apple, as currently they are the only company legally allowed to sell computers
with Mac OS X, but many people criticize them for charging an "Apple tax".

Coming soon: A supercomputer for the rest of us
What if your desktop computer could run 100 times faster than a PC and were simple enough for a high school student to program?
Thats not an idle question. Researchers at the University of Maryland have built a prototype of a desktop supercomputer that can do just
that.
The new computer is at least three years from reaching commercial markets, but it could have a big effect in industries
that process large loads of data. They include the pharmaceutical, aerospace, military and entertainment industries, for applications such as drug
modeling, computer-aided design and digital content creation.
The Explicit Multi-Threading (XMT) computer combines the
decades-old philosophy of using parallel computing algorithms with the huge number of transistors in modern processors...
