When antivirus products (and Internet Explorer) fail you

When Didier Stevens recently took a closer look at some Internet Explorer malware that he had found, something surprised him somewhat.

He discovered that the IE-targeted malware had been obfuscated with null-bytes (0x00) and when run against VirusTotal, he found that fewer than half of the products identified the sample as malware (15 of 32). When all null-bytes were removed, the chances of successful detection improved, though not as much as would normally be expected (25 of 32 detections).

When Didier tried adding more null-bytes to the sample he found that the number of successful detections decreased steadily until, with 254 0x00 bytes between each character, McAfee was the last one standing.

SSL spoof bug still haunts IE, Safari, Chrome

Nine weeks after a hacker demonstrated how to spoof authentication certificates for virtually any website on the internet, users of Internet Explorer and many other applications remain susceptible because Microsoft hasn't patched the underlying vulnerability.

The bug, which resides in an application programming interface known as CryptoAPI, causes IE and other applications that rely on the code to be tricked by fraudulent secure sockets layer certificates. It can be exploited to impersonate websites, virtual private networks, and email servers by adding a null character to the prefix of an address in a legitimate SSL credential.

Mozilla squashes 4 critical bugs in Firefox

Mozilla on Monday issued an update for Firefox that fixes four critical security bugs in the popular open-source browser, including one exposed last week that could make it easy for attackers to spoof SSL certificates used to secure websites.

The vulnerability meant Firefox could be tricked by rogue certificates, a potentially dangerous scenario that could allow attackers to create convincing-looking forgeries of websites used for banking, email and other sensitive services. The technique works by adding a simple null string character to several certificate fields and was independently reported at the Black Hat security conference by researchers Moxie Marlinspike and Dan Kaminsky.

Best Buy Loses Laptop: Owner Sues... for $54 Million

Don't dismiss Raelyn Campbell as a crackpot. Not yet. Listen to her story, and then decide if she's doing the right thing by asking Best Buy to compensate her to the tune of $54 million for a laptop that went missing when she took it in to Best Buy for repair under the store's own extended warranty.

Like many people, Campbell bought an extended warranty for her laptop when she bought it from Best Buy, and she took advantage of that when the power button broke off after a year. Best Buy accepted the machine for repair and said it would be ready in two to six weeks. But six weeks passed and the computer wasn't ready. After three months of ruthlessly hounding the company, Best Buy finally admitted it couldn't find the machine.

Ubuntu issues patch for Linux kernel flaw

Ubuntu is the latest Linux vendor to patch a vulnerability in the open-source operating system's kernel that could have left the door open for hackers to find their way into users' machines. In an email sent overnight on Monday, the Linux vendor warned users to update all machines running recent versions of Ubuntu, ranging from 6.06, which was released back in mid-2006, to version 8.04, which came out earlier this year. The problem also applied to other versions of Ubuntu such as Kubuntu, Edubuntu and Xubuntu.

"It was discovered that there were multiple NULL-pointed function de-references in the Linux kernel terminal handling code," wrote Ubuntu administrators in the email. "A local attacker could exploit this to execute arbitrary code as root, or crash the system, leading to a denial of service."

Dell breaking promises over XP, warranty, financing

Dell is being accused of breaking two promises it has made to customers, pertaining to its continued support of the Microsoft Windows XP platform, next-day repair service, and promotional financing plan. A note from the computer manufacturer's Small Business sales team reveals that its earlier plans to offer Windows XP on machine sales past Microsoft's June 30th deadline are null and void, instead stating that it would cease to offer the operating system past June 30th.

The note reads "Dell offers you the choice that best fits your business. But act fast, because after June 18, Windows XP will no longer be offered on Dellâ„¢ laptops and desktops," followed by several links to Dell's Vostro line of computers.

A series of complaints against Dell have resulted in a New York judge concluding that the PC maker engaged in false and deceptive advertising, Yahoo reports. Dell is accused of hiding eligibility criteria for the two programs, a ruling that came from New York State Supreme Court Justice Joseph Teresi.

Neowin Community Game Awards 2007 - Nominations Begin

In 2005, we started the Neowin Community Game Awards. Unlike other "Best of Year" awards, every step of the process is voted on by the members. From the initial nominations to the final voting, you, the people who play the games, get to voice your opinions on which titles truly stood out from the rest. The NCGAs are the epitome of a "for the fans, by the fans" award.

The time has arrived, finally, for us to pick up where we left off two years ago (we missed a beat in 2006). The nomination round is now upon us. In this round, all members are asked to visit the nomination page and submit their choices for "Best of" in each category. Not a member, but want to contribute? All you have to do is register! This round will continue until October 29th, at which point nominations will be closed and the results tallied. The five most nominated games in each category will then proceed to the final voting round where theyll duke it out for the crown.

What else can be said? Lets get clicking and lets start nominating!

Please only nominate games you truly feel deserve the recognition released between October 06 and October 07. You can fill in as many or few of the categories as you like. Blank fields will be accepted as a null nomination.
