Norton 2009 tackles whitelisting

Symantec has adopted whitelising techniques in an effort to dramatically improve the performance of its upcoming Norton 2009 security suite, according to the company's vice president of consumer engineering, Rowan Trollope.

Trollope admitted that poor performance was the main reason Norton Internet Security customers abandoned previous versions of the product. In the next version, he explained, a "whitelisting approach" significantly reduced the amount of time scanning files that are known to be safe.

Neowin Review: Symantec Norton Internet Security 2009

Back when I got my first PC, there wasn't a need for Antivirus software, malware wasn't heard of, and Spam came in a can, and could arguably be called a tasty treat. Now, you just about can't run a PC without some sort of Antivirus/spyware protection, especially if you're connected to the internet (something we'd only be able to use if we were students at the local college). Back in late 1990, Symantec released their first Antivirus software, called Norton Antivirus (from the original company name, and founder, Peter Norton). At the time, it was considered one of, if not THE best AV software out there.

Symantec patches critical Norton flaw

A bug in the way Norton AntiVirus software uses the ActiveX programming language could cause serious problems for users of Symantec's products.

On Thursday, Symantec patched the flaw warning that a bug in two ActiveX controls used by Symantec's client software could allow an attacker to run unauthorized software on a victim's computer. Security vendor Secunia ApS rates the problem as "highly critical."

The flaw is an "input validation" error, meaning that Norton doesn't properly check the data it's receiving to ensure that it can't be mistaken for malicious commands. The bug affects users of the 2006 versions of Norton AntiVirus, Norton Internet Security, and Norton System Works. Norton Internet Security 2006, Anti Spyware Edition is also affected. ..

Symantec Sets Next Release of Norton 360

Symantec's security software is gearing up for the New Year with a few enhancements. The Cupertino-based security vendor slated the release of Norton 360 Version 2.0 Beta for early January. While the basic Norton 360 engine is the same, version 2.0 is designed with a stronger focus on usabiilty. The new beta version 2.0 offers expanded PC security, identity protection, and more backup and PC tuneup options. It's also accessible and easy-to-use, offering a direct link to streamline user feedback. Symantec will introduce the premier version of Norton 360, which will include improved antispam accuracy and enhanced control features, near the end of the first quarter.

Although the product was initially designed for the security novice, a Symantec survey found that at least one third of its users were tech savvy. "It resonates with anyone who wants security but doesn't want to deal with it," said Jeff Kyle, group product manager for Norton 360. "We weren't sure if the advanced users were really ready for that. But the buying behavior has shown Norton 360 resonates well across all segments."

America to crack down on blogger payola

US regulators are to crack down on bloggers who fail to disclose money or gifts received from companies when reviewing their products. In the new policy from the Federal Trade Commission, offending bloggers could eventually face fines of up to $11,000 (£6,900) per violation, according to the BBC. So-called payola schemes have increased in recent years, with marketers realising the potential of encouraging bloggers and forum contributors to produce reviews or testimonials on their products in exchange for money of freebies. Although the guidelines released by the FTC are not binding by law, they are interpretations of the law that hope to help advertisers comply with regulations, such as those on disclosing endorsements.

Symantec false positive cripples thousands of Chinese PCs

A signature update to Symantec's anti-virus software crippled thousands of Chinese PCs Friday when the security software took two critical Windows .dll files for malware.

According to numerous blog entries from Chinese computer users, a virus signature database seeded yesterday mistook two system files of a Chinese edition of Windows XP SP2 as a Trojan horse which Symantec dubs "Backdoor.Haxdoor." The anti-virus software -- Norton AntiVirus, for example, or the anti-virus component of the Norton 360 or Norton Internet Security suites -- then quarantined the netapi32.dll and lsasrv.dll files.

"With these files removed, Windows XP will no longer start up, and even the system Safe Mode no longer functions," said one user writing to the alt.comp.anti-virus newsgroup this morning...

Microsoft's Anti-Spyware program is causing troubles for people who also use Symantec's Norton Anti-Virus software; apparently, a recent update to Microsoft's anti-spyware application flags Norton as a password-stealing program and prompts users to remove it.

According to several different support threads over at Microsoft's user groups forum, the latest definitions file from Microsoft (version 5805, 5807) detects Symantec Antivirus files as PWS.Bancos.A (Password Stealer).
