04.12.2008Modifying the All Users profile in Vista or Windows Server 2008
Peter Fitzsimon: Ok, so I just spend a few whistful hours trying to work out how to modify the "All Users" profile on a Windows Server 2008 system.
I wanted to add a program to run at login (e.g. in the Start Menu|Programs|Startup directory) for all users that login, but things are now a bit
different with Vista and Windows Server 2008.
I have found quite a few people asking similar questions on the Internet but no one
seems to have offered a solution that works so I thought I'd post my findings.
Firstly, for those who haven't hit this before,
the "C:Documents and Settings" directory where user profiles are stored in Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 systems has changed to "C:Users"
in Vista and Windows Server 2008. (I regularly encounter XP users who have upgraded to Vista getting confused by this one)

24.02.2008Will XP SP3 Slow Vista`s Adoption?
Analysts say that the more secure, stable and reliable Windows XP is, the less reason businesses have to upgrade to Vista in a hurry. The upcoming
release of Windows XP Service Pack 3 will further slow the rate of business adoption of Windows Vista by extending the life of the older operating
system, some analysts say.
Microsoft quietly released Windows XP Service Pack 3 Release Candidate 2 to the masses Feb. 19. But the company
finds itself in a Catch-22, given its need to provide comprehensive security to protect its large installed base of business customers still running
XP while, at the same time, encouraging those customers to upgrade to the new Vista operating system. But the more secure, stable and reliable XP is,
the less reason they have to upgrade in a hurry.

27.05.2008CardSpace (InfoCard) and Live ID
Running Windows Vista? Noticed
the Windows CardSpace applet
in the Vista control panel but
not sure what its for? That
may soon change if Windows
Live ID provides CardSpace
integration.
Formerly
called InfoCard, CardSpace
integration with Windows Live
was discussed back in March
2006 when Live ID was first
emerging as the updated
Microsoft Passport. To put it
as simply as possible,
CardSpace allows you to
securely store multiple
identies on your PC, and use
them online when required.
This eliminates the need to
enter a password when you want
to identify yourself to a web
service - instead you choose
the identity you wish to send
from your PC. This helps
protect the user from phishing
scams and keyloggers, which
for more important services
like online banking, helps
reduce the risk of identity
theft.
So how would
this work for Live ID? Testers
of the in-beta Windows Live ID
authentication services SDK
(which allows users to log
into 3rd party sites with
their Live ID) are currently
able to create a
custom
signin page on the Windows
Live ID test servers. This
login page presents the user
with the existing option to
sign in with a Live ID, or the
alternative - to sign in using
CardSpace.

02.04.2008University of Utah Meets the Wrath of Conficker
It seems that nobody can escape the widespread adoption of
Conficker; not
even the University of Utah!
Today, the virus infected over 700 machines on the campus, including the ones situated in the school's
three hospitals. Despite its reputation for having the ability to slow computers and steal personal information, it seems that compared to the
University's incredible firewall, Conficker is no match. As of yet, no medical files or any other secure information has been compromised.
Personal computers such as laptops that are running Windows and connected to the University network however, have not been so lucky. Hungry for
information at the command of its masters, Conficker could easily be collecting login information, credit card information, banking info, etc. The
University faculty has advised students to take extra precautions until the virus has been eradicated from the network and from their systems.
Nothing bad seems to have happened yet, but we haven't been enlightened yet, as to the full extent of Conficker's power. For now, the faculty
is on-guard, and working overtime removing the virus.

08.05.2008Firefox, IE vulnerable to fake login pages?
Mozilla's Firefox 2 and
Microsoft's Internet Explorer
7 are vulnerable to a flaw
that could allow attackers to
steal passwords.
Dubbed a reverse cross-site
request, or RCSR,
vulnerability by its
discoverer, Robert Chapin, the
flaw lets hackers compromise
users' passwords and
usernames by presenting them
with a fake login form.
Firefox Password Manager will
automatically enter any saved
passwords and usernames into
the form.
The data
is then automatically sent to
an attacker's computer
without the user's knowledge,
according to the Chapin
Information Services site.
An exploit for this
flaw has already been seen on
social-networking site
MySpace.com, and it could
affect anyone using a blog or
forum that allows
user-generated HTML code to be
added, according to Chapin.
"Users of both
Firefox and Internet Explorer
need to be aware that their
information can be stolen in
this way when visiting blog
and forum Web sites at trusted
addresses," Chapin said.
According to security
company Netcraft, which
discovered the exploit being
used on MySpace, a fraudulent
login page was hosted on the
company's own servers.

10.12.2008Five secrets to faster Vista starts
Oh, great. Here we go again.
The wise old men of mainstream tech journalism are once again repeating the conventional wisdom that
Vista is slow to start up and slow to shut down. Theyre wrong. I
proved this to my
satisfaction last spring (see also the
first and
second parts in the series) with tests on three separate systems, and Ive just
repeated the tests on a new crop of Vista PCs to verify that theres no new problem. The results are the same or better, perhaps reflecting incremental
improvements from the many reliability and performance updates since then.
In this post, Ill explain why theyre wrong and show
you how you can fix the problem if you encounter a slow startup.
