The iPhone, from Nokia

It has an accelerometer that detects physical orientation, a full-face, stylus-free touchscreen and can scroll through photos with the flick of a finger; but it isn't an iPhone. During today's "Go: Play" event, where the company made several sweeping announcements, Nokia showed a brief demonstration video depicting a concept phone (due to ship sometime next year) that bears striking resemblance in form and functionality to the iPhone. The video was demoed alongside the introduction of a new device-specific music store, and Nokia's immediate threat to the iPhone, an updated version of the N95 handset with 8GB of flash storage.

During today's event, Nokia also detailed its new Nokia Music Store, one of the first device-specific music stores available. The service provides a wider catalog of "millions" of songs and includes systems for recommending music based on past purchases. Users can also tag songs rather than buy them to create a wish list for a later purchase, Nokia says.

In addition, the company introduced a new release of the N95 phone, intended to present immediate compeition for the iPhone. It ships with with 8GB of flash storage and is due to ship in the fall for 560 Euros ($763). The new N95 is likely to show in North America as an unlocked device, similar to the original.

Nokia app monitors juice

A new application from Forum Nokia allows developers, and anyone else, to see just how much power their phone is using, and compare consumption when running different applications.

The app is free to download from Forum Nokia, the Nokia developer's portal, and runs on S60 3rd-Edition handsets. Our N95 averages out at around half a watt, though we managed to get it up to around three by playing loud music through it. We wanted to see how much would be consumed when playing video, but the N95 didn't have the memory for both applications to be running at the same time.

Nokia sues Apple over the iPhone

News reported on the BBC news website states that Nokia, the world's giant in the manufacturing of mobile phone technology, is suing Apple for infringing patents on mobile phone technology used in the iPhone. Nokia added that this patent breach applies on all iPhones since its launch in 2007. Nokia have said that this is due to a lack of compensation from Apple, who they are accusing of "trying to get a free ride on the back of Nokia's innovation". These alleged infringements, of which there are ten- involve wireless data, speech coding, security and encryption.

What Makes a Good Phone?

Microsoft is about ready to formerly launch its unified communications strategy. That may be tomorrow, but what about the comm that matters to most people, today? So we ask: What do you want from your cell phone? Two weeks ago I sold my iPhone, after Apple released an update that "bricked" devices that had been unlocked. Relocking the phones would have made sense. Disabling them crossed a line of ownership. Even Microsoft gives users 30 days to activate before throttling back Windows Vista.

I once described using the iPhone as "life changing." But the change didnt last long enough. On Friday, I replaced the iPhone with another Nokia N95, but now the US 3G version. I very much expected to miss the iPhone user interface, touch screen and Web experience. Absolutely "no" to the first two, and only "some" to the latter one. The N95-3 is hands-down the best cell I have ever used.

Nokia starts global positioning service

Nokia launched a service on Thursday which it said would cut the time a GPS-enabled cellphone takes to pinpoint its whereabouts, opening new opportunities for location-based online services.

Nokia hopes the service, available for users of its flagship N95 phones, will cut the startup time to one minute, from up to three minutes currently. The slowness has so far hampered takeup of cellphone navigation.

"It will be reliably under one minute in most countries," Ralph Eric Kunz, head of Nokia's navigation and mapping operations told Reuters in an interview.

Handset makers see GPS-based navigation as one of the next big value-adding offerings and even at this early stage...
