20.01.2006Gmail overtakes AOL, becomes third largest email provider

Live Hotmail, at 47.1 million users, in around seven months. Gmail has continued to grow most likely due to its apps, like Google Docs and Google
Calender which take standard desktop applications into the "cloud." Gmail's growth did not even seem to be slowed by its perpetual beta tag
which was just removed earlier this summer. Yahoo Mail continues to lead the pack when it comes to U.S.

It's hard to believe but five years ago Gmail was launched and changed how we view email storage forever. If you recall when Gmail was made
semi-public it shattered the email storage capacity for any available free service. Storage was measured in gigs and you seemingly could store
unlimited amounts of emails. The Gmail launch also started a frenzy of trying to acquire an invite to the service. It was a clever but very
effective technique by Google to give out invites to users who would then get 10 more invites and so on which caused people to start selling them on
Ebay.

09.12.2005New Video and Voice Chat in Gmail
Google
announced a brand new Gmail feature
today: Video conversations in Gmail - called "Gmail Video and Voice".
This service combines the chatting abilities of GTalk, previously
used in Gmail for chatting inside the browser. Google has now enabled full video, voice, and text chat inside the browser to Firefox, Chrome, or
Internet Explorer users on Windows and Firefox users on the Mac, with possible expansion to Linux and mobile phones later. The service works by
downloading and installing a small plugin which enables Gmail to use your webcam and microphone and enables the video and voice features of the
service.
Gmail users will find this addition useful, because many of their existing contacts use Gmail or GTalk already, and no dedicated
application is necessary.
