Smith had worked with Cray since its inception as Tera Computer Co. in 1988. He has also published several works on issues regarding parallel computing. "As microprocessor technology continues to evolve over the next decade or so, we're going to see the capabilities of a supercomputer cluster on the desktop which will require a different software architecture," Mundie said. "Burton will be investigating how to develop software to benefit from the opportunities which multi-core multiprocessors will present."

Real-Time Ray Tracing : Holy Grail or Fools Errand?

Browse the world of real-time computer graphics, and youll find the oft quoted meme: One day we will have real-time ray tracing, and graphics will be so much better! This is because many people hold up ray tracing as the solution to realistic lighting and as such, they view current rasterisation renderers as used in GPUs and consoles today as inherently inferior.

Indeed, according to Wikipedia, rasterisation is not based on physical light transport and is therefore incapable of correctly simulating many complex real-life lighting situations. Ray tracing, on the other hand, facilitates more advanced optical effects, such as accurate simulations of reflection and refraction, and is still efficient enough to frequently be of practical use when such high quality output is sought.

So roll on, real-time ray tracing! Or are there some caveats that the proponents of ray tracing handily forget to mention?

Malicious microprocessor opens new doors for attack

For years, hackers have focused on finding bugs in computer software that give them unauthorized access to computer systems, but now there's another way to break in: Hack the microprocessor.

On Tuesday, researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign demonstrated how they altered a computer chip to grant attackers back-door access to a computer. It would take a lot of work to make this attack succeed in the real world, but it would be virtually undetectable.

Steve Jobs' Absense Truly Due To Health?

According to a previously reliable source, Apple misrepresented the reasons behind Macworld and Jobs' keynote cancellation. Allegedly, the real cause is his rapidly declining health. In fact, it may be even worse than we imagined:

Steve's health is rapidly declining. Apple is choosing to remove the hype factor strategically vs letting the hype destroy apple when the inevitable news comes later this spring.

This strategic loss will be less of a bang with investors. This is why Macworld is a no-go anymore. No more Steve means no more hype. Saying they are no longer needing is the cover designed by the worldwide "loyalty" department.

Microsoft offers Zune team 'iPod Amnesty Bin'

In what can be seen as either a joke or a real attempt to get employees to give up Apple iPods in favor of the Zune MP3 player, the team at Microsoft that builds Zune has set up a bin at its headquarters so employees can drop in iPods they don't want to use anymore.

A http://flickr.com/photos/fimoc ulous/503637222/>photo of the "iPod Amnesty Bin" , which has on it an image of a bitten green apple and the words "Bite me," has been posted on Flickr. From the looks of the photo, not many people have been willing to give up their iPods, though a few of the earlier versions of Apple Inc.'s popular media players were lying at the bottom of the bin.

A user who calls himself "fimoculous" and identified himself in an e-mail as MSNBC.com employee Rex Sorgatz , posted the photo, and said he thought the bin was someone's idea of a joke, nothing more. MSNBC.com is a joint media venture between Microsoft and MSNBC. ..
