Why Vista? Good Question

Debra Donston: In a survey conducted by Ziff Davis Enterprise Editorial Research for eWEEK, respondents indicated that they have been underwhelmed by Microsoft Windows Vista. And, it seems the future of Windows is ... XP?

Vista? What Vista? One year after Vistas release, just 2 percent of respondents said the OS is the primary desktop OS at their company. A whopping 92 percent said Windows XP was the primary desktop OS.

And it seems that enterprises are planning on sticking with what they have for the foreseeable future: 72 percent of respondents said that the OS theyre currently using is the one they expect to be using in 2009. Looks like XP has a longer life than Microsoft plannedor wanted.

Vista or XP? How about both?

Scott Lowe: Now that Windows Vista SP1 is peeking out from around the e-corner, many śpre-SP1 adverseť organizations will probably begin the process of evaluting Vista in their organizations. However, for the foreseeable future, there will be those that swear by Windows XP and its stability and performance. So, whos right? Why not both?

As much as it will pain some to admit it, Vista does have some redeeming qualities. And, for others, Windows XP continues“and will continue“to serve a very useful purpose in the enterprise. So, what are some of the situations in which it might make sense to run both Windows Vista and Windows XP in the organization? And, what are the challenges involved in doing so?

Windows XP SP3 Release Candidate Goes To MSDN

Microsoft made available on December 3 for download the near-final Release Candidate (RC) of Windows XP Service Pack (SP) 3.

The RC is available to all Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) and TechNet subscribers. This isn't yet a generally available, "public" RC of XP SP3; that is still coming at some future date that Microsoft hasn't disclosed.

Microsoft provided an RC "preview" of XP SP3 to 15,000 testers in mid-November.

Microsoft is still on track to ship the final XP SP3 in the first half of calendar 2008. XP SP3 is a rollup of all previously released XP updates, according to Microsoft, "including security updates, out-of-band releases, and hotfixes."

Lately, Microsoft has been releasing XP SP3 and Vista SP1 builds in lockstep. (The same 15,000 testers that got XP SP3 RC preview also got the Vista SP1 RC preview.) Given that Microsoft told its own employees to expect the company to make the RC of Vista SP1 more broadly available some time this week, it seems logical that the Vista SP1 RC is right around the corner, too.

Microsoft Brings Games for Windows Live to Windows XP

At E3 2007 today, we met with Kevin Unangst, the global director of Games for Windows, and Chris Early, the new general manager for Games for Windows Live. Though they didn't go into specifics regarding Microsoft's plans for the future of the PC as a gaming platform, they did share some news and gave us a few insights into where it's headed.

The biggest news for many of you is the announcement that GFW Live, currently Vista-only, will be headed to Windows XP. This was actually sort-of announced in the MS press conference on Tuesday night, when Cliff Blezinski announced that the PC version of Gears of War, which uses GFW Live, will be available on Windows XP as well as Vista. It sort of went unnoticed, but we have confirmed that indeed, GFW Live will hit XP this year.

Although Early and Unangst were quick to point out that Vista has sold over 40 million copies and they figure 10 million of those are core gamers, they recognize that XP still has a huge installed base and will continue to for some time. Don't expect DirectX 10 to come to XP, though.

Five reasons why XP will never die

Preston Gralla: Microsoft is doing its best to kill Windows XP, but that's not going to happen. No matter what the company does, the operating system will live on. Here are five reasons why XP will never die.

Enterprises want XP

There's no escaping the simple fact that enterprises have snubbed Vista, and show no signs of abandoning XP. Just a few days ago, Forrester said that a survey of 50,000 enterprise users found that throughout 2007, Windows XP use remained at a steady 89%. Vista grew from zero to 6% in that same time, but that came about because users moved from Windows 2000 to Vista, not from XP to Vista. Don't expect corporations to switch to Vista from XP in 2008.

Windows XP going off market in June: What it means

Well it looks like XP is about to disappear from stores coming this June. Oh what shall I do If I still don't want to migrate to Vista? Well actually it will probably still be for sale in stores and such but Microsoft itself will no longer sell it. Read on.

Microsoft originally announced over a year ago that Windows XP would be going off the market in January 2008. XP was later given a brief stay of execution, to June 30, 2008. That deadline is fast approaching, which has led to much panicking from people who aren't quite sure what XP's "going off market" means, exactly.

People are still as confused as ever. So let's take a stab at clarifying, once again, what's going to happen by answering some frequently asked questions about XP's imminent disappearance.

OEMs to Continue Shipping XP

If you already own an XP license and are still hesitant to switch to Vista, Microsoft's "downgrade rights" policy, which initially began to be exercised in 2001, may be in your favor if you would still like to purchase a machine running Windows XP after the June 30, 2008 deadline when Microsoft will stop offering the operating system. OEMs such as Dell have said that they still have no plans to stop offering XP as an option:

"Dell has the ability to exercise 'Windows Vista downgrade rights' on your behalf in the factory if your business is still reliant upon Windows XP and you'd prefer to have Windows XP Professional preinstalled on your PCs," according to their new downgrade policy section for XP.
"Downgrade Rights means that anyone with a Windows Vista Business or Windows Vista Ultimate operating system can downgrade to Windows XP Professional provided they have the media for Windows XP Professional."

Microsoft releases XP mode RC for Windows 7

Microsoft has released updated bits of Windows XP Mode for Windows 7. XP Mode is a method to provide better compatibility in Windows 7, and to pull it off with as little trouble as possible. It's also dubbed XPM, or formerly Virtual XP. XPM is built on the next generation Microsoft Virtual PC 7 product line, which requires processor-based virtualization support (Intel and AMD) to be present and enabled on the underlying PC, much like Hyper-V, Microsoft's server-side virtualization platform. XP Mode will bring a Virtual PC-based environment, as well as a fully licensed version of Windows XP SP3, free for all owners of Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise and Ultimate editions. XPM will provide 100% compatibility with Windows XP.

Microsoft Delays Windows XP Service Pack 3

Bink has an interesting article up on his site concerning Windows XP SP3.

Microsoft has apparently pushed back the scheduled release date of SP3 to the second half of 2007 . Microsoft executive Steve Ballmer had originally announced that the 3rd service pack for XP would be released before the launch of Longhorn (now Windows Vista).

Bink suggests that we could see a "Rollup Package" coming from Microsoft in the near future for XP, with the possibility of that package replacing SP3 all together.

One can also reason that Microsoft will use the delay of SP3 to further the cause of upgrading to Vista later on this year.
