07.09.2005Frustrated Saudi youth take a shine to YouTube
Illegal stunts in cars, joyriding, bullying and political dissent -- video-sharing Web site YouTube has taken off in Saudi Arabia. The site owned by
search engine giant Google Inc has seen tens of thousands in the conservative Saudi kingdom upload and download a broad range of thrill-seeking,
political and just downright bizarre video clips in a surge of expression. Much of the material involves cars, an obsession among affluent youth who
cannot go to cinemas, mix with unrelated women or even enter some shopping malls because of Islamic prohibitions by the authorities and religious
scholars.

17.12.2007Robot cars race around California
A driverless car called Boss has scooped a $2m prize in a Californian race for robotic vehicles. Boss successfully drove around an urban
environment, avoiding other cars, and covering 60 miles (85km) in less than six hours, all without any human control. The modified Chevrolet Tahoe was
one of six cars that crossed the finish line, from a pack of 11 robotic vehicles which set off at dawn. The others had to pull out after crashes or
other problems.
The race was organised by the US militarys Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (Darpa) and is designed to develop
unmanned vehicles that could be used in battle situations. Automotive manufacturers say the technology could eventually lead to self-driving cars.
Boss navigated around a simulated town, created on a disused US Air Force base in Victorville, in the Californian desert. It had to deal with single
and dual carriageway roads, junctions, buildings and car parks. As well as the 10 other driverless cars, Boss shared the road with more than 30
professional human drivers to simulate busy traffic.

05.11.2007The end of the road for Yugo
The Yugo, a car my family had as I grew up in Sarajevo has ceased production. This technologically "innovative" and cheap car from the early
1980's has not changed much in design, but consumer customization and the technology being implemented by its drivers launched the modern
"pimping"
of cars. Production of the car has officially ended after almost 30 years. Just like the Lada and the Skoda, the Yugo was
often ridiculed. Apparently Yugos came complete with heated rear windows to keep your hands warm when the car needed a push - just one of many jokes
inspired by its questionable quality. There are cars with spoilers and television screens.

Hackers use parking tickets to infect people's computers
There have been many interesting ways hackers have gone about infecting people's computers, but this one is possibly the first to use real-world
tactics to trick users. BBC News is reporting that a group of hackers have begun placing parking tickets on people's cars, that leads them to a
fake website and instructs them to download a toolbar that will (supposedly) show the user photos of their car. The ticket said that users could do
this to "view pictures with information about your parking preferences". Obviously, the toolbar is actually a Trojan horse that activates upon
reboot, telling users to download fake anti-virus software from a certain website.

Test Drive Unlimited PC Beta On Fileplanet!
Upset that Xbox 360 users have
Test Drive Unlimited already?
Upset that PC users have to
wait months after the 360
version is released to play
it? Well be upset no longer,
as Atari brings the Test Drive
Unlimited beta to Fileplanet!
This is a subscriber only beta
(for now, as usual) and be
prepared this is an absolutely
HUGE file to
download - if you get in the
beta that is. The installer is
3.5 GB in size, I'm not
kidding.
The
game, for those of you who
don't know, is a free roaming
racing game. And by free
roaming - I mean you have
about 1,000 miles to race on
Hawaiian roads. Cars from
companies such as Audi,
Mustang and Lamborghini are
represented among many others.
There are about 120 cars in
the game, so I'm sure you
will find one to suit you. You
can "pick up" and play
against anyone at pretty much
anytime. You just drive around
the island, and can turn any
stretch of road into a race
with someone else. Of course
as you win races and get money
you can buy upgrades and all
that good stuff we are used
to. More or less Test Drive
Unlimited is a MMOCG
(massively multiplayer car
game) but without the insane
gnoll grinding!
So head on over to Fileplanet
and sign up for the beta, and
hopefully you will get
accepted and enjoy yourself on
the big road!

Vehicle warning system trialed
A German research project on
show at hi-tech trade fair
Cebit envisions a peer-to-peer
network for vehicles on a road
passing road condition data
back and forth. Cars or bikes
experiencing problems would be
able to convey the information
to other drivers via a
dashboard screen or through a
mobile phone headset. For
spotting dangers and jams, the
system would use data from
sensors that were likely to be
fitted to cars, bikes and
trucks in the future, said Dr
Anselm Blocher, a researcher
at the German Research Center
for Artificial Intelligence
who is co-ordinating the
project. For example, cars
could spot oil on the road by
combining temperature readings
with wheel traction
information, he said.
The system was smart enough
to recognise how busy a driver
was and would adjust warnings
accordingly. Based on the
driver's situation, the
system could use a blaring
alarm, a warning on the
dashboard, mark the danger
point on a digital map or
alert about the problem via a
headset. As well as giving
information about dangers,
drivers could also ask the
SmartWeb system for
information about traffic
jams, speed traps, parking
availability and other
problems in natural language.
Starting a query would kick
off a web search for the area
a car was travelling through
which would generates requests
to vehicles ahead or nearby.
The SmartWeb project already
has 16 partners including BMW,
Siemens, Daimler Chrysler,
Deutsche Telekom and the
European Media Lab.
