Robot cars race around California

A driverless car called Boss has scooped a $2m prize in a Californian race for robotic vehicles. Boss successfully drove around an urban environment, avoiding other cars, and covering 60 miles (85km) in less than six hours, all without any human control. The modified Chevrolet Tahoe was one of six cars that crossed the finish line, from a pack of 11 robotic vehicles which set off at dawn. The others had to pull out after crashes or other problems.

The race was organised by the US militarys Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (Darpa) and is designed to develop unmanned vehicles that could be used in battle situations. Automotive manufacturers say the technology could eventually lead to self-driving cars. Boss navigated around a simulated town, created on a disused US Air Force base in Victorville, in the Californian desert. It had to deal with single and dual carriageway roads, junctions, buildings and car parks. As well as the 10 other driverless cars, Boss shared the road with more than 30 professional human drivers to simulate busy traffic.

Everything you always wanted to know about Google...

"Everything you always wanted to know about Google, but were afraid to ask" was the title of this very interesting 34-slide presentation on Google prepared by FaberNovel, a french consulting firm. It is hard to realize the real nature of this just 10 years old giant given the number of services it has continuously released, updated (and sometimes shut down) or acquired. The presentation gives a great overview of the company's overall strategy and the reasons it has become what it is today.

The end of the road for Yugo

The Yugo, a car my family had as I grew up in Sarajevo has ceased production. This technologically "innovative" and cheap car from the early 1980's has not changed much in design, but consumer customization and the technology being implemented by its drivers launched the modern "pimping" of cars. Production of the car has officially ended after almost 30 years. Just like the Lada and the Skoda, the Yugo was often ridiculed. Apparently Yugos came complete with heated rear windows to keep your hands warm when the car needed a push - just one of many jokes inspired by its questionable quality. There are cars with spoilers and television screens.

Frustrated Saudi youth take a shine to YouTube

Illegal stunts in cars, joyriding, bullying and political dissent -- video-sharing Web site YouTube has taken off in Saudi Arabia. The site owned by search engine giant Google Inc has seen tens of thousands in the conservative Saudi kingdom upload and download a broad range of thrill-seeking, political and just downright bizarre video clips in a surge of expression. Much of the material involves cars, an obsession among affluent youth who cannot go to cinemas, mix with unrelated women or even enter some shopping malls because of Islamic prohibitions by the authorities and religious scholars.

Microsoft Develops Key Wi-Fi Technology For Cars

The idea of a mobile internet connection in your car is an attractive one.  With the majority of Americans hooked to the internet, the idea of the extra web time is highly appealing.  While it might dangerously tempting to driver, the concept has many safe applications.  From passengers enjoying surfing the net or VoIP  to internet streamed television or radio, there's a world of opportunity.  Even the drivers could benefit from something new to do while waiting in the parking lot at their local grocery store.

To help achieve this vision, an alliance between the University of Massachusetts, Microsoft and the University of Washington have cooked up a new technology they're call Vi-Fi (Vehicle Wi-Fi).  The system aims to provide users with on-the-go internet access more cheaply than existing cellular broadband systems.  And it uses some advanced technology to do it.

Electronic Billboards Turn into Digital Wanted Posters

Orwell, eat your heart out: between ads for hamburgers and liposuction, several giant digital billboards on the street flashed an image of Oscar Finch's face taken by a surveillance camera. However, the young man wasn't selling anything: he was running from police. And, as it turns out, he was captured less than a day later, mainly due to the ability of the billboards to act like the wanted posters of the days of yore. " We had been looking for this individual for 10 days and turned it around in 24 hours, " said Mobile police spokeswoman Nancy Johnson. " So we're thinking it's going to be highly effective. I think it's a great asset for us. "
