03.10.200710 Futuristic User Interfaces
Good user interfaces are crucial for good user experience. It doesnt matter how good a technology is if we, designers, dont manage to make user
interface as intuitive and attractive as possible, the technology will hardly reach a breakthrough. To gain the interest in a new product or
technology, users need to understand its advantages or find themselves impressed or involved.
And here is where creative ideas
and unusual interface approaches become important. Innovative doesnt mean usable and usable hardly means innovative. As usual, its necessary to find
an optimal trade-off. And some user interfaces manage to achieve just that...

18.08.2008Firefox Graphical Keyboard User Interface Mockups
This is a series of mockups,
done by Mozilla UI designer
Alex Faaborg, showing what a
quick-command interface could
look like in Firefox (jumping
between tabs, searching,
tagging); heavily inspired by
the OS X app Quicksilver:
Here are some ideas Ive
had about how several
different Firefox features
could be designed using a
graphical keyboard user
interface. Please note that
these are all only conceptual
mockups, and we currently have
no official plans to implement
these features for Firefox 3
(although, we may at some
point release a prototype
extension through Mozilla
Labs). If you are an extension
developer and are interested
in contributing to a project
like this, please email me or
leave a note in the comments.
All of these mockups
show interfaces that are
entirely keyboard driven. A
keyboard shortcut launches the
UI, and the UI is later
dismissed by either selecting
an item using the arrow keys
and hitting enter, or by
hitting escape. These
interfaces are all modal, and
when invoked they occupy large
amounts of space on the
screen.

09.10.2008Microsoft designs the T-Mobile Shadow home UI
Long Zheng: There was a
lot of talk last week
about the
T-Mobile Shadow (a.k.a. HTC
Juno) user interface, some couldn’t believe it was still Windows Mobile. The Shadow sports a new homescreen codenamed “
Neo” designed by Microsoft in collaboration
with HTC and T-Mobile to make the mobile user-experience friendlier. The group at Microsoft responsible for the design is the
Advanced Technology Center (ATC) in Beijing China. It’s a little known
fact they also worked on the user interface for the
Microsoft Surface.
Whilst
most of the news coverage and
reviews about the Shadow talk a lot about the new
interface, there are some less-than-desirable pictures of the interface itself. Which is why I went straight to the source to get some high-resolution
screenshots and concept images of the “Neo” interface. They look so much better than the photos.

Why does Explorer show a + sign even if there are no child folders?
Raymond Chen: Mike Williams asked in the Suggestion Box why
Explorer shows a + sign next to a folder even though it doesn't have any children. Mind you, this wasn't a suggestion; it was just a random
question. I don't enjoy answering random questions about specific details of user interface elements since, as it turns out, I did not write every
single user interface element in the system, nor did I attend all of the design meetings.
Some people are under the impression
that as a senior developer that works with the user interface, I naturally attend every single user interface design meeting, even meetings to discuss
things that I am not responsible for. I don't know when these people expect me to get my work done or why I would enjoy going to hundreds of meetings
that have nothing to do with my job. These people probably expect a senior electrical engineer at Boeing to attend all meetings on each of the 777's
electrical systems, even if her responsibility is just the entertainment system.

Microsoft Licenses Office "Ribbon"
Microsoft surprised everyone
today by announcing that its
fresh new Office 2007 user
interface, called "Ribbon",
is going to be licensed to
developers out there, free of
charge. This license applies
to all kinds of third party
applications, except one type:
Office 2007 plugins and
extensions.
Apparently, Microsoft made
this choice in an attempt to
boost Office 2007 sales when
it launches by creating an
ecosystem around its new user
interface, since users will
have less difficulty adapting
to the new interface since its
use will be broader.
Although this is a quite
welcome move among developers,
the software giant isn't
quite throwing away the
numerous years of development
of it to its direct
competitors, being especially
strict with open-source
projects.

New "Network Direct" RDMA Interface Available with Windows Server 2008
Phil Pennington: Windows HPC Server 2008 introduces a new low-latency RDMA network API known as "Network Direct". This RDMA interface in
addition to and distinct from the existing "Winsock Direct" interface. The Network Direct interface introduces several advantages over
Winsock Direct including no dependency on the Winsock stack and much lower latency metrics. MS MPI is being developed to take advantage of this
new interface.
This means that Infiniband vendors, for instance, will need to provide HCA Network Direct providers in
addition to (or perhaps instead of) the Winsock Direct providers published previously. Consequently, development is underway by both Microsoft
and partners to enable full support for the entire network stack.
For programmers, the Network Direct API provides a model
similar to the User Mode Driver Framework (UMDF). MS MPI will be the first user-mode application to leverage Network Direct.
