17" MacBook Pro: Non-removable Battery?

Recently, 9to5Mac has reported that Apple will release an updated 17" MacBook Pro at MacWorld. We expect for this rumor to hold true as 9to5Mac have leaked accurate information on the new iPods and the unibody MacBooks in the past.

According to their source, battery life on the 17" MacBook Pro will be significantly increased and will use a much slimmer battery. However, the battery will be non-removable, similar to the batteries in MacBook Airs and all iPods. As expected, the machine will take on the unibody look as seen on the latest MacBooks and MacBook Pros.

9to5Mac also believes that the white MacBook will be dropped, which may bring down the price of unibody MacBooks.

MacWorld starts tomorrow, January 5, and continues until January 9. Several new products discussed in the past weeks are predicted to be released such as the iPhone Nano and updated desktops.

Apple hit with class-action suit over MacBook, MacBook Pro displays

Apple Inc. has been hit with another class-action lawsuit. This time the formal complaint comes courtesy of a pair of MacBook and MacBook Pro owners who charge the company with falsely advertising the quality and capabilities of the displays used in the Intel notebooks.

In the May 3rd filing with the Superior Court of California for the County of San Diego, private citizens Fred Greaves and Dave Gatley are seeking multiple forms of relief and reimbursement, in addition to an injunction that would prevent Apple from continuing to market its existing notebook displays alongside claims that they support "millions of colors" and offer views "simply unavailable on other portables."

Specifically, they charge that the Cupertino-based company's MacBook and MacBook Pro notebook displays are only capable of displaying the "illusion of millions of colors through the use of a software technique referred to as 'dithering,' which causes nearby pixels on the display to use slightly varying shades of colors that trick the human eye into perceiving the desired color even though it is not truly that color."..

Apple brings HDCP to a new aluminum MacBook near you

High Definition Content Protection (HDCP)you can't live with it, but you practically can't buy an HD-capable device anymore without it. While HDCP is typically used in devices like Blu-ray players, HDTVs, HDMI-enabled notebooks, and even the Apple TV in order to keep DRMed content encrypted between points A and B, it appears that Apple's new aluminum MacBook (and presumably the MacBook Pro) are using it to protect iTunes Store media as well.

The Unexpected: Battery Life in OS X vs. Windows Vista

AnandTech has done a thorough review of the new Macbook and Macbook Pro including comparing battery life performance of Vista vs. OS X on the Macbook Pro and Macbook Air. The results are quite surprising to say the least...

Anand Lal Shimpi: A while ago I started testing the Lenovo X300 with hopes of comparing it to Apple's MacBook Air. The review never saw the light of day but the testing was mostly complete. Obviously the X300 doesn't run OS X, but the MacBook Air can run Windows so I compared battery life between the two under Vista, which yielded some unexpected results.

There are no scripted battery life tests under OS X, while under Vista we have things like MobileMark - luckily, the tests I've put together for OS X can easily be reproduced under Vista. Let's take a look at my tests under OS X...
