09.03.2009InfoWorld launches drive to save Windows XP
The clock is ticking for Windows XP, the tried-and-true Microsoft operating system that millions of businesses and individuals depend on. Soon, the
only Windows option will be Vista, an operating system that businesses as well as individuals have disliked and often avoided. The lackluster changes
to Vista, coupled with the high costs of switching tens of millions of computers to it, have convinced InfoWorld that XP should not be retired as
planned on June 30.
"Over the past year, CIOs and CTOs have consistently told me they see no significant benefits to Vista, and
really don't want to spend the time and money to update all their computers, retrain their users, and deal with application incompatibilities for a
cosmetic upgrade," said Galen Gruman, executive editor at InfoWorld.

14.01.2008Microsoft releases earnings results
Microsoft announced its earnings report yesterday.
The company
announced revenue of $15.06 billion a 9% increase over the same period of the prior year.
"Our customers are
asking how they can save money and do more with less," said Kevin Turner, chief operating officer at Microsoft. "Microsoft is uniquely positioned to
help our customers save money through supplier consolidation, increased productivity, and a low total cost of ownership through the depth and breadth
of our product portfolio and solutions."
The earnings certainly didn't disappoint investors and reassured the industry that global IT
spending hasn't halted as many have feared.
Chris Liddell, chief financial officer of Microsoft noted that "we feel extremely good
about our relative competitive position and our ability to continue outgrowing IT spend. We believe our exceptionally strong cash flow, product
pipeline and financial strength will allow us to weather economic conditions well."
In a
report on the earnings the company detailed some
"forward-looking statements". These are based on current expectations and assumptions that are subject to risks and uncertainties. One of the
statements was "delays in product development and related product release schedules", we all hope there won't be any delays hitting Windows 7 as
the company starts to unveil its plans for the next generation Windows OS
next week.

16.05.2007111,000 supporters petition to save Windows XP
The "Save Windows XP" campaign launched by InfoWorld has attracted more than 111,000 supporters who want to see Vista's predecessor sold on new
computers after the June 30th deadline.
InfoWorld, a publication that covers the information technology industry, launched their “Save
Windows XP petition drive in January. Microsoft had originally planned to stop selling XP to retailers and computer manufacturers at the end of 2007.
Windows Vista has met strong criticism amongst consumers and businesses, some of whom are reluctant to switch to the newer operating
system, despite improvements in numerous areas such as security.
Among the concerns about Vista are the amount of RAM and hard drive
space it requires, its seemingly slower speed and frustration over a lack of third-party drivers for devices and peripherals.
According
to Net Applications, who measure operating system usage, Windows XP had 82.25% market share last May, while the relatively new Windows Vista had
3.75%. This figure has since risen to 14.02% as of last month, with Windows XP down to 73.59%.

12.08.2008Boxed copies of Money Plus to stop being sold
Microsoft has decided against releasing a 2009 version of Money Plus, its personal-finance-management software. The company also is planning to
discontinue selling Money Plus as a boxed software product at retail — but insisted the move shouldn't be interpreted as an immediate move away from
shrink-wrapped PC software.
Microsoft had been releasing each year a new version of its
Money Plus product. A new version was due out this fall, in fact. But
according to a blog posting on August 6 to the public Microsoft Money forum by Most Valuable Professional Bob Peel, Microsoft feels annual updates
with only incremental improvements are no longer needed.

11.08.2008Update: 30,000 ask Microsoft to save Windows XP
Thirty thousand people have now signed InfoWorld's
"Save XP"
petition, which was launched four days ago. Roughly half were from the U.S. and the rest from other countries.
The petition
asks Microsoft not to discontinue Windows XP as planned on June 30, but to instead keep it available alongside the newer Windows Vista indefinitely.
InfoWorld will deliver the petitions to Microsoft later this spring
More than 100 people have added their own comments to
InfoWorld's
Save XP blog, and many external sites have promoted the campaign by adding
InfoWorld's
countdown clock to their sites. The vast majority of
comments supported the petition drive, providing a variety of reasons that both individuals and companies do not want to lose the option to obtain new
XP licenses available after June 30. Lack of compelling benefits in Vista, coupled with the training, support, and other costs of upgrading was the
most cited reason. Some cited compatibility concerns.
