Microsoft Anti-Spyware Deleting Norton Anti-Virus
Microsoft's Anti-Spyware program is causing troubles for people who also use Symantec's Norton Anti-Virus software; apparently, a recent update to Microsoft's anti-spyware application flags Norton as a password-stealing program and prompts users to remove it.

The virus, which has been given the names Virus.Linux.Bi.a/ Virus.Win32.Bi.a, was reported at the end of last week by security firm Kaspersky Lab. Researchers worry that the malicious code may be part of a disturbing new trend of viruses that can run on Windows, as well as other operating systems that have been largely ignored by hackers.

much of an impact on sales of full-blown security suites.

07.02.2007Trend, Sophos and McAfee flunk Vista SP1 anti-virus tests
Top tier anti-virus vendors including McAfee, Trend Micro, and Sophos all failed to secure Windows Vista SP1 in recent independent tests.
Virus Bulletin, the independent security certification body, said 17 of 37 anti-virus products tested failed to reach the VB100 certification
standard. McAfee VirusScan, Trend Micro Internet Security and Sophos Anti-Virus overlooked threats known to be in circulation. Other vendors whose
products failed to make the grade included Alwil, BitDefender, Norman, PC Tools, and VirusBuster.
Some of the ignored threats -
largely polymorphic file infectors - have been in circulation for months. "It is disappointing to see so many products tripping up over threats that
are not even new - computer users should be getting a better service from their anti-virus vendors than this," Virus Bulletin technical consultant
John Hawes said.

19.05.2007Microsoft Moves Show Importance of Maintaining Antivirus Solutions
As reported recently by TechTarget, Inc., Microsoft has greatly beefed up their anti-malware team by hiring four of the anti-virus industry's top
researchers.
Microsoft earlier shook up the anti-malware industry by hiring other top talent away from competitors such as
Symantec Corp. and McAfee, Inc. Such moves show the importance being placed by the software giant for developing anti-virus and staying ahead of
viruses, spyware and worms. The recent additions to Microsoft's team -- hired away from CA -- are Jakub Kaminski, a 30-year veteran of the technology
industry and former head of CA's Australian antivirus research lab, and three of his colleagues from the same location.
Corporations go to great lengths to protect systems from malware -- a threat that only seems to worsen as time goes on. Keeping anti-malware
software constantly updated, and ensuring virus scans and performed on all company computers regularly is part and parcel of properly maintaining a
computer system. What many IT personnel may not realize, however, is the impact of disk file fragmentation on virus scan run times...

03.08.2007Keylogging Trojan Dodges Anti-virus Detection
A new variant of the Russian
Trojan Gozi is circulating on
the Web, this time armed with
a keylogging function and the
ability to scramble itself so
it is difficult to detect by
anti-virus software. The new
Trojan is believed to have
been spreading since April 17
and like the original, which
was discovered earlier in
2007, it steals data from
encrypted Secure Sockets Layer
streams. The latest variant
was uncovered May 7 by Don
Jackson, a security researcher
at SecureWorks in Atlanta.
Jackson also found one data
cache from the Gozi variant
that contained 2,000 new
victims and several thousand
bank and credit card account
numbers, Social Security
numbers and other personal
information. SecureWorks
researchers suspect that this
not the only server with
stolen Gozi data that exists.
" If you were
infected before mid-May, then
it will act like a rootkit and
hide itself on your PC and
will make itself undetectable
by most anti-virus
software ," he said. To
remedy this, he suggested that
home users reboot their
computers in Safe Mode and run
an anti-virus scan assuming
their anti-virus vendors have
a signature for the Gozi
variant. The newest instalment
of Gozi has a compression
component that it uses to
uncompress the blocks of code
that it needs to run. When it
no longer needs those blocks
of code, it recompresses them,
making it almost impossible to
see everything the variant is
doing in memory and that much
harder for anti-virus scans to
detect.
