Exclusive: Microsoft's new Anti-Virus, 'Morro', revealed

Ever since Microsoft discontinued its "OneCare" Anti-Virus suite, gossip has been flying that Microsoft would be releasing a free Anti-Virus\Anti-Spyware tool codenamed "Morro". The software product, codenamed "Morro" after a beach in Sao Paulo, Brazil, is already being tested by Microsoft employees and a trial version will be made available "soon". Microsoft has stated that Morro would be available by the end of 2009 at the latest. "Morro" is likely to be targeted to compete with the low end of anti-virus products from other providers, and it will not have much of an impact on sales of full-blown security suites.

Trend, Sophos and McAfee flunk Vista SP1 anti-virus tests

Top tier anti-virus vendors including McAfee, Trend Micro, and Sophos all failed to secure Windows Vista SP1 in recent independent tests.

Virus Bulletin, the independent security certification body, said 17 of 37 anti-virus products tested failed to reach the VB100 certification standard. McAfee VirusScan, Trend Micro Internet Security and Sophos Anti-Virus overlooked threats known to be in circulation. Other vendors whose products failed to make the grade included Alwil, BitDefender, Norman, PC Tools, and VirusBuster.

Some of the ignored threats - largely polymorphic file infectors - have been in circulation for months. "It is disappointing to see so many products tripping up over threats that are not even new - computer users should be getting a better service from their anti-virus vendors than this," Virus Bulletin technical consultant John Hawes said.

Symantec false positive cripples thousands of Chinese PCs

A signature update to Symantec's anti-virus software crippled thousands of Chinese PCs Friday when the security software took two critical Windows .dll files for malware.

According to numerous blog entries from Chinese computer users, a virus signature database seeded yesterday mistook two system files of a Chinese edition of Windows XP SP2 as a Trojan horse which Symantec dubs "Backdoor.Haxdoor." The anti-virus software -- Norton AntiVirus, for example, or the anti-virus component of the Norton 360 or Norton Internet Security suites -- then quarantined the netapi32.dll and lsasrv.dll files.

"With these files removed, Windows XP will no longer start up, and even the system Safe Mode no longer functions," said one user writing to the alt.comp.anti-virus newsgroup this morning...

Microsoft Moves Show Importance of Maintaining Antivirus Solutions

As reported recently by TechTarget, Inc., Microsoft has greatly beefed up their anti-malware team by hiring four of the anti-virus industry's top researchers.

Microsoft earlier shook up the anti-malware industry by hiring other top talent away from competitors such as Symantec Corp. and McAfee, Inc. Such moves show the importance being placed by the software giant for developing anti-virus and staying ahead of viruses, spyware and worms. The recent additions to Microsoft's team -- hired away from CA -- are Jakub Kaminski, a 30-year veteran of the technology industry and former head of CA's Australian antivirus research lab, and three of his colleagues from the same location.

Corporations go to great lengths to protect systems from malware -- a threat that only seems to worsen as time goes on. Keeping anti-malware software constantly updated, and ensuring virus scans and performed on all company computers regularly is part and parcel of properly maintaining a computer system. What many IT personnel may not realize, however, is the impact of disk file fragmentation on virus scan run times...

Trend Micro fails anti-malware test

All three of the anti-malware products submitted by Trend Micro for Virus Bulletin's independent tests failed because they produced false positives.

Of the 20 products submitted for testing, six generated false positives when scanning a set of known clean files and failed to meet the requirements for VB100 certification.

"Trend Micro, one of the 'big four' anti-malware companies, submitted no fewer than three of its anti-virus products, all of which falsely identified a Microsoft development tool as spyware," said a statement from Virus Bulletin.

"Other products to generate false positives were Fortinet's FortiClient, Ikarus Utilities, and VirusBuster."

Keylogging Trojan Dodges Anti-virus Detection

A new variant of the Russian Trojan Gozi is circulating on the Web, this time armed with a keylogging function and the ability to scramble itself so it is difficult to detect by anti-virus software. The new Trojan is believed to have been spreading since April 17 and like the original, which was discovered earlier in 2007, it steals data from encrypted Secure Sockets Layer streams. The latest variant was uncovered May 7 by Don Jackson, a security researcher at SecureWorks in Atlanta. Jackson also found one data cache from the Gozi variant that contained 2,000 new victims and several thousand bank and credit card account numbers, Social Security numbers and other personal information. SecureWorks researchers suspect that this not the only server with stolen Gozi data that exists.

" If you were infected before mid-May, then it will act like a rootkit and hide itself on your PC and will make itself undetectable by most anti-virus software ," he said. To remedy this, he suggested that home users reboot their computers in Safe Mode and run an anti-virus scan assuming their anti-virus vendors have a signature for the Gozi variant. The newest instalment of Gozi has a compression component that it uses to uncompress the blocks of code that it needs to run. When it no longer needs those blocks of code, it recompresses them, making it almost impossible to see everything the variant is doing in memory and that much harder for anti-virus scans to detect.
