Microsoft Vista security impresses IT staffers hot for NAC

Microsoft's network access control client in Vista and now in Windows XP has a lot of IT executives excited, according to an informal poll of about 250 attendees of an Interop Las Vegas NAC seminar who are actively considering deploying the access technology.

About a third of them say they would use the NAC support in the Microsoft client software rather than pay more and deal with deploying and maintaining a client with more features that they have to pay extra for. Microsoft calls its NAC technology Network Access Protection (NAP)

If the machines meet the requirements in the network access policies, then they are allowed on the network. If not, then the machine may be disallowed from connecting to any machine on the network, or you might configure policies that allow the machine to connect to remediation server that allow the machine to remediate and try to connect to the network again after remediation is successful.

Microsoft, TCG, Juniper Tie the NAC Knot

A lot of vendors selling a lot of components that have to agree on how to measure a lot of things have to come together to make an effective Network Access Control system. You're talking vendors of hardware, security, network security, client security and operating systems deciding how to tell who's running a system trying to access the network, whether that system's healthy, whether it needs to be quarantined, how to give it the proper level of network access and how to fix it if it's not up to snuff.

Microsoft and the Trusted Computing Group on May 21 are making an announcement that will provide the fabric to mesh much of all that.

At Interop in Las Vegas, the two are letting it be known that the TCG's TNC (Trusted Network Connect) NAC architecture will adopt Microsoft's NAP (Network Access Protection) protocol, which is primarily a client/server NAC spec. Juniper Networks at the same time is announcing that it's working with Microsoft on interoperability between Juniper's UAC (Unified Access Control) NAC standard and Microsoft's NAP.

10 Ways Vista is more annoying with Windows 7 available

We all know Windows Vista got a bit of a bum rap. Its biggest sin was that it shipped earlier than it should and its reputation has never recovered. However, with Windows 7 now out, those of us who have to switch between PCs now find ourselves discovering completely new things about Windows Vista that are annoying -- because they are things that Windows 7 made so much better. Here's our list... #1 "Program not responding" Windows Vista loved to throw programs under the bus for not responding. This was especially true of Windows Explorer which regularly would fade out a window because it was trying to access a network resource.

Microsoft study: Vista improves networking

Companies that deploy Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista in tandem could see more than a threefold increase in networking performance for file transfers, downloading roaming profiles for mobile users and accessing files on a portal, according to a Microsoft-commissioned study conducted by the Tolly Group.

In a 38-page white paper titled "Enhanced Network Performance with Microsoft Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008," the Tolly Group compares the networking performance for file access on WANs and LANs using various configurations of Windows Server 2003 R2 or 2008 on the backend and XP SP2 or Vista on the frontend.

Not surprisingly, the combination of the newest operating systems brings the best gains in network performance in large part, Tolly concludes, because of an upgraded TCP/IP stack and updates to thefile-sharing Server Message Block (SMB ) protocol...

Windows Vista: Offline Files

Here's one I can relate to, Jim talks about the improved Offline files feature in Vista, something I use myself and am very happy with.

One of the key things that we focused on for Windows Vista was improving the experience for mobile (laptop) users. If you are like me, you spend quite a bit of time running around with a laptop. However, when I am in my office, I tend to use my desktop. The primary way that I share files between my desktop and my laptop is by storing them on a Windows Server (it's also the primary way that I make sure that my files get backed up). For example, at Microsoft we redirect the "Documents" folder (previously known as "My Documents" in Windows XP) to a share on the server (of course, we use access controls on the folders to make sure that I am the only person who can see my files).

By redirecting key folders like the Documents folder to a file share, my documents are available to me no matter which one of my Windows PCs I am using. The problem of course is what happens when I don't have access to the server -- such as when I am not on the corporate network or perhaps sitting on an airplane. Frankly, the same problem exists with any file share that I might try to access when I am not on the corporate network.

Who's on first? Wireless network security with Linux

Network monitoring and intrusion detection are integral parts of network security. This becomes even more important when introducing wireless access, because now theres an openly available entry point into your network. You safeguard buildings with security systems, valuables with safes and server rooms with doors. Its important to secure your wireless network too. Heres how to build monitoring in from the onset along with some great open-source tools.

As soon as a wireless access point is installed it begins emitting broadcasts, announcing its Service Set Identifier (SSID) to all and sundry. This is useful: it makes discovery and initial client configuration very swift and painless. Yet the downside is obvious; this doesnt just help your users but any person who is armed with a wireless card be it in their laptop, PDA or iPod Touch!

This problem can be counteracted; most all access points (APs) will let you prohibit SSID broadcasts. In this case, the AP waits for a client to connect with the proper SSID and channel. The network is now harder to find popular tools like NetStumbler wont see it and if it is harder to find, it is also more secure.

How Windows Vista Handles Wireless Networking

Each new version of Windows has made significant improvements in the operating system's networking capabilities. Back in the days of Windows 95 and Windows 98, networking was a complicated affair for technical experts only; you could set up and configure a network from within Windows, but it took a lot of work. Things got much better with Windows XP, where networking became more or less a plug-and-play operationalbeit one that required a lot of user interaction and didn't always work as promised.

With Windows Vista, things again have changed for the better. Microsoft completely rewrote the networking stack in Vista, which means that networking not only is more reliable, it's also much easier to set up. In fact, in most instances you don't have to do much setup at all; Windows Vista recognizes your network and equipment, and automatically configures the system as necessary. (At least theoretically; networking in Vista can still be counterintuitive at times, and occasionally things don't work quite as promised.)

This is good news if you're setting up a new network for your Vista-based computersbut also useful if you're connecting a Vista PC to an existing network or Wi-Fi hot spot.

Thoughts from the field on Windows Server 2008 - NAP

Dave Northey: Denys Kovalenko works for A1 Computers in Cabinteely (just south of Dublin). He's been evaluating Network Access Protection for a while now, and wanted to share his experiences with you.

"I have been testing a great feature of Windows 2008 Server, called Network Access Protection (NAP).

I have been testing NAP since Longhorn Beta 3 and Vista RTM. It looks very promising, especially with the number of hardware manufactures who are going to support 802.1x NAP in their network devices. That fact it is controlled by policy makes it more interesting. The NAP configuration wizard makes it's easy to deploy, but I personally like manual configuration. Netsh NAP commands makes it easy for scripting.

Something New when Uninstalling Drivers and Devices on Windows Vista

Chris Mu: Today, I'd like to share a background story about a KB article that describe a interesting behavior in Windows Vista that is different with previous OS. Maybe it is not the most important or highest impacted issue occurs in Windows Vista, but I think it will impact some of you when you are troubleshooting for your firendes/family... OK, let go through this issue.

This issue is about re-install network adapter in Windows Vista and the KB article for this issue will be KB945399 and published in a few days. The issue can be reproduced in many computer models and you will encounter it when you uninstall a network adapter device using Device Manager. Maybe you have to troubleshoot whether the network adapter driver installed is right to troubleshoot OS network issue. Therefore, after uninstall the adapter, you may try to install another driver for the device ... Everything works fine in Windows XP/Server 2003 and so on. However, when you try to do same action in Windows Vista, the popular OS nowadays, you will see soon after the uninstall process completes, PnP detects the network adapter as a new device and automatically installs the device and drivers. Instead, in Windows XP, only after you click to scan hardware change, the PnP will detect the network adapter and install the driver.
