Nokia joins the netbook world

Nokia announced today it has joined the race in bringing a new netbook to the market offering up to 12 hours of battery life with 3G ready Internet. The small, lightweight and portable mini-laptop is said to weight in at 1.25 kilograms and comes with the backing of Microsoft's Windows operating system, most likely Windows 7. The mini-laptop or netbook will ship with WiFi-enabled ready for Internet usage. The netbook will also have an integrated A-GPS working on Ovi Maps allows for pinpoint navigation; the ultra lightweight, aluminum chassis netbook comes equipped with a 12 hour battery life for maximum usage.

Visa to launch global cellphone payment system

Here comes news about the electronic wallet (again).

At CES 2007, Visa announced that it plans on launching a global payment system allowing people to pay for goods through their cellphones. This would be done by passing a cellphone by a special reader, possibly without physical interaction with a vendor. As well, remote payments between individuals and coupons offered by vendors would be possible. Visa said it would make these features available at launch, and would roll out the full set of functions over time. Companies currently backing the system include but are not limited to: IBM, Nokia and Verisign.

" Visa has long realized the importance of the mobile channel to the future of payments and as a medium to deliver to consumers ," said Patrick Hauthier, Visa's senior vice-president of innovation.

A date for the launch of such a system is currently unknown.

Visa introduces pin payment card

Visa is introducing a revolutionary new credit card allowing users to use their PIN for online card transactions.

Aimed at savvy internet users, the Visa PIN card features an alpha-numeric display and a 12-button keypad built into the back of a conventional credit, debit or prepaid card. The card, developed using technology from Australia-based Emue technologies, promises a three-year battery life, and much improved protection from online fraudsters.

Customers enter their PIN code onto the keypad and this generates one-time password. The one-time password is then used to authenticate online purchases.

MBNA, a Bank of America company in the UK, Cornèr Bank in Switzerland, Cal in Israel and IW Bank in Italy will each begin limited pilot trials of the new card shortly.

Micro-Star International (MSI) is planning to launch the Wind U120 with a built-in 3.5G module in November this year. The netbook will feature Intel's Atom N270 processor, 1GB memory, 120GB hard drive and Windows XP and be priced around NT$18,000 (US$552) in a choice of white or black, according to notebook industry sources. With the addition of the new netbook, the company's total netbook shipments will have a chance to break 500,000 units in 2008, and may reach 600,000 if MSI's cooperation with telecommunications operators goes well.

Intel optimistic about future nettop performance

Although Intel is optimistic about the sales performance of Atom-based nettops, some PC vendors doubt nettops will be as successful as netbooks. According to Intel forecasts, between 2008-2011 netbook and nettop shipments will together see annual double digital growth. Netbooks are expected to see shipments of 47 million units over the three years, while nettops are expected to ship 60 million units.

However, some PC vendors think that although Asustek Computer's Eee PC has sparked the netbook trend, it will be difficult to pass the same experience onto nettops

Microsoft confirms no Windows 7 restrictions on netbooks

Microsoft announced that they have removed the netbook restrictions that previously prevented users from installing any version of Windows 7 on their netbook. The lifted restriction means users can install Windows 7 starter on a netbook, and that the three application restriction has been removed as per consumer's request. "OEMs and ODMs have the choice to install any version of Windows on a netbook," a Microsoft UK spokesperson said. " Starter is an entry version and doesn't have many of the consumer or business features. The three application limit isn't there anymore." Windows 7 Starter and Home Basic variety only come in 32bit versions and are missing a variation of features from the higher end versions.

Bright future ahead for Windows 7 and netbooks

Craig Marcho, a support engineer with the Performance Team of Microsoft has blogged his recent experiences with Windows 7 on netbook. A pre-beta build of Windows 7 loaded on a netbook helped him to run Microsoft Outlook 2007, a number of internal applications, and IE 8 without any issues. Though Craig hasn't mentioned which version he installed, since it is a pre-beta build of Windows 7, I think we can assume it to be Windows 7 Ultimate.

Claims that Google would be getting into the operating systems business go back at least three years, but the current rumours could well prove to be true. Android is well developed, some key players appear to be in place, and the Google name resonates more strongly with the public.
