Advanced Micro Devices will lay out its product strategy for small, low-cost laptops, called netbooks, at an analyst meeting next month.
Netbook sales have soared in recent months, largely due to the release of Intel's low-cost Atom processor. Although Taiwanese chip vendor Via
Technologies, which provides the C7 processor used in Hewlett-Packard's Mini-Note 2133 netbook, has a foothold in this market, Intel hasn't
faced any competition from AMD in this space. But that appears set to change.
"We do have strategies together with our OEMs for pushing
our solutions both down into smaller form factors and lower notebook price points," said Dirk Meyer, AMD's president and CEO, during a Thursday
conference call with financial analysts.

Microsoft's determination to wrest control of netbooks from Linux has seen it drop the bulk price of Windows XP for the systems to under $15 per
copy, according to a

an unnamed source. Although Microsoft has never publicly disclosed its pricing for netbook licenses, the
Wall Street Journal now hears that
a copy of XP Home for the budget portables is less than a third the price of a Windows Vista copy for a typical notebook, which costs the PC maker
between $50 and $60 per copy in large batches. The price is well below the usual $30 asked for the Starter Edition of Windows, which is meant for PCs
in the developing world.

International to follow. Netbooks are mini-laptop PCs designed for mobility, and typically weighing less than 2 kilograms. Most of the components on
board, including the microprocessor, are less powerful than those of full-fledged laptops so batteries last longer. They're designed for Internet
surfing and work on spreadsheets or word processor documents, not for heavy duty gaming, video editing or other multimedia work.

Microsoft confirms no Windows 7 restrictions on netbooks
Microsoft announced that they have removed the netbook restrictions that previously prevented users from installing any version of Windows 7 on their
netbook. The lifted restriction means users can install Windows 7 starter on a netbook, and that the three application restriction has been removed
as per consumer's request. "OEMs and ODMs have the choice to install any version of Windows on a netbook," a Microsoft UK spokesperson said.
" Starter is an entry version and doesn't have many of the consumer or business features. The three application limit isn't there
anymore." Windows 7 Starter and Home Basic variety only come in 32bit versions and are missing a variation of features from the higher end versions.
